Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

    How about enabling airplane mode?

    Yes, that is true. I was actually talking about selectively shutting off the 3G radio, and even trying to differentiate between turning off access to it and turning it off completely (yet there may be no difference between those in practice). Furthermore, I read now it's possible to reenable wifi while on airplane mode - I didn't know that - so that would shut off cellular data and the 3G radio for calls/sms completely from what I understand. Mind you this is not the same thing as using the 2G network for data and calls, which is what the 3G toggle in 5.1b3 allows you to do - which gives you mobility outside of wifi while using a less power consuming paradigm. Anyways. Good point.

    @sbailey4

    As it is the situation now with iPhone 4s and its battery life one had to charge it every single night, every single day, 365 nights a year!!!

    If one forgets to charge iPhone 4s one night then one is screwed badly because most likely iPhone 4s will die on him next day when he or she expects less!!! After a year when the battery worn down the things will be even worse because if one forgets to charge the iPhone 4s one night then iPhone 4s will die during that very night and it cannot be used as alarm clock!!!!

    I understand you are here to complain (its obvioius). Others here are here to find solutions and still others to provide solutions. So take your iPhone back over and over until you get one with no static. Then sell it on ebay as soon as you get one that works!

    Your last complaint was for another user whose phone is operating as spec. So you threw in "well what about two years from now?"  So clearly that is an absurd complaint (even coming from you enx). I am sorry all you can do at this point is write foolish posts and you feel like you cannot get Apple to replace the iPhone or sell it and move on. As stated all over the place they are working on software updates to address more of the battery issues and until its released all anyone can do is wait or keep writing the same complaints over and over and over and over and keep stating "no fix in sight". That is just plain false information.

    What fighter game could you guys play over 3G? enx23 vs. sbailey4 - would love to see a video of that on youtube! Then it could be posted here! With the respective battery drain!

    OK so dont forget!    BTW, are you now stating that any other phone out there will not have the battery degrade after 1 or 2 years? ONLY iPhone 4s battery will not last forever but all other phones the battery will last as long as you have the phone? Once again, not anyones elses fault if YOU forget to charge your dang phone. Especially if you are fully aware there are some issues with battery life currently for SOME users. I would think you would carry your charger in your pocket with your phone since its as bad as you say it is. Not sure how you would forget since all you talk about is how bad you got it with iPhone 4s.

    I have managed to let you pull me into the pit with you. I am climbing back out and going back to the task which I monitor these forums, to help and offer help to folks not debate stupid what ifs. What if you forget to fill your car with gas, is that Volkswagons fault too then? I mean they said you could drive up to a week on a tank of gas, so...................

    I think you are worrying needlessly.   Both my wife and I have made a habit of charging our iPhones every single night.   We have never experienced battery problems as a result, beginning from the original iPhone.

    If the battery were serviceable, it would be even less of a concern though.

    I mean, if the teardown revealed a complex multi unit setup like in the iPad, I'd understand, but with the iPhone, it just begs to be serviceable...

    @Jameson!

    You an your wife are charging your iPhone 4 every night. Right? The battery life of iPhone 4 is around 3.5 days. Why are charging every night?

    The battery life of my iPhone 4s is miserable compared to iPhone 4! One can get iPhone 4 which is cheaper and has a much better battery life.

    The battery life of my iPhone 4s will be even more miserable in a year from now just because it has been short to begin with!!! Even the year after iPhone 4s had been launched there is no oficial fix for the battery life issue of iPhone 4s!!!

    How much time does Apple need to fix the battery life issue of iPhone 4s? How long will it take Apple to fix the static noise issue in iPhone 4s?

    You talk as if you are away from any way to charge a phone all day, every day.  It is possible to charge the phone from a vehicle, or at work, at least for most of us.  I get good enough battery life for two days, with normal usage.  It is also possible to get a pretty good quick charge from any computer with USB, by turning off the phone (not just the 'sleep' switch, but a real power off).  That way the phone gets the maximum charge in the minimum time.

    As for the normal degredation of the battery with age... How long do you plan to keep your phone?  Normally, a properly used Li-Ion battery is good for at least 3 years before the charge level deteriorates to the point where you will notice it.

    This may be an issue for you, depending on your lifestyle, but it isn't for most people, and it is pretty much a normal situation for any smartphone (save maybe the new Motorola Razr Maxx).

    The purpose of compass calibrating is that you can set the compass for true north, or magnetic north.  If you set it for 'true north', then it needs to know where you are in order to calibrate the displacement from true north, and the same goes for magnetic north.  However, unless you travel a lot, and REALLY need to be able to trust your compass, then both can be turned off.  That is location and calibration settings can be set off.

    How can I test to see if the Raise to Speak sensor is on?

    Well, one way is to go to the 'home' screen, and raise the phone to your ear.  If Siri comes on, it's on.  However, it may STILL be on if it doesn't come on.  Not sure how you can be sure.  Raise to speak was unreliable on my phone, so, not liking it anyway, I just turned it off.

    We still have an IPhone generation 1 phone that were never ever licensed for use in South Africa and required being hacked to work in SA. Short story it sucked as a phone compared to others legally in the market at the time but my wife uses it as an iPod to this day and it still retains a good charge to this day. Battery technology has come a long way since then so I think the concerns some may have of the life span of their 4s battery are slightly premature. I like others would like to see a proper fix to the battery drain of the 4s but I am in no way concerned that the battery will just die in a years time. No phone on the market is going to have a battery that retains its charge or gives as much life as it did a year prior.

    On a separate note, does Apple ever test their own web sites on their mobile products? Replying to topics here using the iPhone is clumsy and not very mobile friendly, works ok on iPad though.
