Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

I had a restore my iPhone 4S 2 hours ago and I decided to restore as new phone. Just when I was doing the setup, I changed my mind and restored it from previous backup so I don't lose my Fruit Ninja awesome high score (720 in arcade mode). Obviously that was a huge mistake. After less than 1 hour 30 minutes of standby (opened wifi for less than a minute to check Whatsapp and Twitter notifications), I lose 1% battery. Right now I'm in the process of restoring but this time I'll restore it as a new phone with no apps and I'll see where it goes.

You an your wife are charging your iPhone 4 every night. Right? The battery life of iPhone 4 is around 3.5 days. Why are charging every night?

I guess that this looks to me like using a mobile phone as a laptop.

Operation: Restore, accomplished! I'm waiting for the clock to hit 7 and full charge so I can evaluate the iPhone clean with no previous backups. Will keep you posted.

Apple just needs to fix this already, it's absurd how fast the battery depletes. They're on what 5.1 beta 3 at the moment. Relase a battery fix if you have one seperately then beta the other stuff to your hearts content.

Excellent. let us know how it goes. BTW WhatsAPP is a known offender of battery drain for some users. Perhaps that is all that was killing yours. See how it works like you have it (fresh restore). If ok maybe get another backup without overwriting your complete backup, you can do this in iTunes if you rename the folder in your user directory (if Windows 7) C:\Users\xxx\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup. May need to find it in other versions of windows or on a Mac. Rename the big long numeric folder to whatever maybe add 2012-1-17 to the front of it. Then run the backup from iTunes and it will create a new backup of current fresh state. You can see this afterwards in itunes when you select the restore, you will have 2 to choose from.

So now you have your complete backup with your score you want to keep and a backup of a fresh install. If all is ok you can try to restore your complete (with your score), remove the whatsapp app and see if it works. Worse case you can restore your fresh working backup if need be.

Honestly if you can live without all the previous stuff, keeping the fresh restore would be best. Good luck!

Actually its not going as I expected. Stats:

    Usage: 18 Minutes

    Standby: 32 Minutes

I didn't use the phone at all and I made sure all settings are off (BT, timezone, etc.) before I took it off the USB port. Right now my phone is empty. It has no third-party apps, music, videos and photos. I'm not really sure about renaming the folder as I don't know where to find it. I have a Mac. Oh, and I didn't really get what does renaming the file will do... Thanks for your help.

I will reply back after an hour has past since I removed it from the charger.

Oh so fresh install no help huh? Well perhaps a replacement or trip to Apple is in order. Renaming the folder allow you to have more than 1 backup. By default iTunes backs up and overwrites the one there so if you backup a bad config, you overwrite the good one. Renaming the folder will keep the backup thats there and when you backup again iTunes will create a new backup. so you have 2 to choose from if you need to restore. Doesnt really matter at this point since the fresh install did not help you. I would see about a replacement. With everything off and no 3rd party apps something else is wrong I would say.

After 1 hour of standby and no usage, it was still at 100% and 30 minutes (approx.) usage. Later on, I didn't use it whatsoever. I lost 3% after about 3 hours of standby. I then decided to erase all data and settings (Settings>General>Reset) from the iPhone and at 40 minutes standby, I lost 1%.

This sort of analysis after 3 hours or 1 hour is just useless... This doesn't work in a linear way. Only at 0% will you really know on average how much you're losing.

Unfortunately, I do not live in the US but live in Dubai so therefore, I don't have an Apple Store here. There are several Authorize Apple Resellers and they do not provide the same service as you. I asked for a replacement from a reseller and they said they can't do it but rather told me to "wait for the new fix by Apple or you can send your phone to the technician for check-up which will take a week." Eventually I'll have to give them my phone for a week or so to get a replacement.

I couldn't actually find the folder you're telling me about. Where do I go to? Please make it clear! (e.g. Finder>etc.) Thanks a lot for your help!

One thing that has seemed to improve battery life for me is not having the phone track the usage time and standby time.  I fully charge my phone and while it's still plugged into the charger turn off the power.  I then unplug it from the charger and turn the phone back on.  When you go to the usage statistics it now shows the standby and usage time as -'s and states underneath "usage times will be shown after iphone is fully charged".  It is now 1PM EST and I have had my phone on since 6:30 AM EST.  Battery still shows 99%.  Phone has mostly been in standby while i've been at work (just sent and received a few texts).  Not sure if it is a result of the phone not keeping track of usage and standby times or other settings i have turned off but 99% after 6.5 hrs seems good.

Thanks for the info! Maybe that has bearing on people who had weird battery drains on 3G while on transit etc. Anyways.

Okay, I will do another analysis once I fully recharge it so that'll be most probably tomorrow. After I erased all data and settings from my iPhone, the stats no longer exist and I guess I have to recharge it for it to come back. I don't wanna fk up my battery even more... Haha.
