Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Last night did a complete recharge and all looks good. Usually I lose 5% battery just going to work but it was still at 100%.

    Happy Friday!

Do you mean "5% overnight"? This is quite good figure, why did you complain?

Actually my iPhone lost 1% per 10 hours overnight IF CHARGED TO 100% (go to bed with 100% and at morning gets 99%). But if charged less than 50%, overnight discharge is about 5%.

You suggest using iCloud as a backup.  Why?  In order to backup to the iCloud, you need to use your internet connection, either through wi-fi, or through 3G.  That means a lot of data must go through a relatively small pipe, compared with the USB connection you have when you connect it directly to your computer and backup to iTunes.  I can only see iCloud backup as useful to those who are away from their computer for days at a time.  I use it to get my photos on my computer, and for 'Find My iPhone.  Neither of which is active unless I ask for it.

Okay guys i need help! There are so many pages that i don't know where to start. Whilst my phone is charging i know i have to turn a lot of things off to increase the battery life.

    1. -  Turn Wifi Off

    2. - Turn bluetooth off

    3. -  Turn off location services

    4. - Turn push data off

    5. - Turn mobile netowrk off unless i am browsing the net

    6. - Limit the brightness to half way

Is threre anything else you suggest i should turn off or lower?

Yes, turn off compass calibration, and time zone checking.  Turn off Siri 'Raise to talk'.

As for wi-fi if you are around wi-fi much, you might do well to leave it on, unless you have an unlimited data plan.

Sorry because i have never used an iphone before so all these 'terms' are new to me.

Turn ping off??? - What's ping?

Turn vibrate off and turn the sound off i get.

Even the date and time have to be turned off? How will i know what time it is?

Ping is a feature where the phone periodically 'polls' the network, even if you don't need it.

The date and time thing refers to automatically setting it across time zones.  Most carriers sync the time on your phone automatically.

Don't you think that is a bit harsh?  Calling someone a liar without proof is more than a bit serious in some parts of the world.  His results may be a bit off, if he left the phone plugged in for some time.  On the other hand, if he did it just long enough to sync to iTunes, and then unplugged it, the results wouldn't be that much off.  Trouble is, neither you, nor anyone else can tell if he was plugged in for 1 minute, or 3 hours.

    PROBLEM SOLVED:

    JUST TURN THE IPHONE OFF!

"your battery will now last as described by apple"

Over 3 months and Crapple still hasn't fixed this fiasco ? *** ?

After 4 iPhones I finally gave up and got an Android! I even have FLASH now and can see the other half of the Internet Steve jobs kept hidden from all us iPhone users.

Wake up and dump Crapple! There is a full world wide web out there to explore on a  long lasting battery with flash effects and videos!

    Apple = Crapple

Stop with the Politically Correct baloney.   When these guys come in and post these wonderful battery life results, that "phones has been plugged in" message always seems to be part of the mix.    He's a liar........

I charge it overnight to 100%. It takes an hour to get to work and that's when it drops five percent. What I tended to experience before I did the restore is that my phone charge dropped at a certain rate whether it was being used by me or when locked. This would be for fairly light purposes like texts/emails/ etc. The usage/standby figures would also be fairly similar. However now I am experiencing a similar drop in battery usage when using the phone, but now it seems to keep its charge longer when its locked, and the usage figure is a lot different.

I'm certainly noticing positive signs from a simple restore of the ios. After I did it I was trying to run it down to zero so I could charge it back up, however I could only get it as far as 35% before I went to sleep. So I reasoned I'd do it the next day. With light use it was still running almost 24 hours later, quite impressed.

On a side note I was trying to follow the iCloud backup/restore method, but it calculated it would take 16 hours. Ouch! So just used by comp instead.

Hey guys....I got this result with my 4S....Its still an underperformance from what Apple has mentioned in the specs but do you think I should go and get an exchange or should I wait for the update....I have used a bit of wifi, bit of mobile data and the location services was 'on' too....Not too much but I have browsed a little bit just to check how the mobile does....

For the first few days the phone was having a very dull battery but then after draining and charging it completely, this is the first best result I got....I still am annoyed with the phone a little bit cos my 3GS did awesome....like some 20 hrs of usage or something.....

Honestly, with that level of usage, I think you'll be wasting your time with an exchange.   You should simply plan on charging overnight, every night, until a fix comes out........

Boateng, There is a lot of information to process.  However you dont need to turn off everything necessarily. Wi-fi should be on if you are in a place where you can use it due to 9 hrs use verses 6hr of use over 3g. Plus its faster typically and saves your cell data plan.  Location services only turn of particular applications that you dont need. For example you probably DO want Maps and Siri using location but maybe not Facebook. So I would not totally turn off location totally. Same for notifications. Weather app, if you dont really travel a lot maybe set the citys you want and turn off Local. Local on causes GPS to fire off every time you check weather and if you are in city x always dont really need it looking to see where you are every time.  Email seems to work better by setting to manual and letting it fetch when you open the mail app to actually view it instead of having mail download constantly. Here is a good place to look for a nice summary (thanks 1appleadaynoway)  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3526981

Basically keep it simple and use basic logic. Items YOU dont need, turn off. Every app will want to use location and notification, just say no to the ones you do not really need.  See my post/story earlier in this thread Page 623. I went from not a full day to I can go two days now if I want to and i still have all the functionallity of the items I use. Hope this helps!

Personally I must be one of the lucky ones.  I last charged my phone Wednesday morning.  I am now at 2 days 4 hours of standby and 2 1/2 hours of usage.  Usage has not been heavy and is comprised of roughly the following.  20 minutes call time, 15 minutes music, 45 minutes wi fi and 1 hr 3G. Battery % currently shows 58%.  I would say this is well within the specs apple provides. Note: I do have Location and Siri off and mail set to manual.

This has become almost laughable if it were not for the fact that Apple still has not found a fix with all their high dollar engineers or even went public with a statement concerning this problem. So much for the big Apple mystic....GREED is apples middle name.

The hilarious thing is that all these goobers that are will to shell out big money for a phone and turn all of its smart phone functions to use it just to say they have a 4s. PT Barnum said it best : A sucker born every minute.
