Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Can you do what you want with the phone between charges? If so then its awesome! Dont get hung up in stats, enjoy your phone.

Exactly!   I have everything on and use the vast majority of it.   I plug it in on those few days I can't make it through, but if I'm on wifi, it's not a problem going all day.   I bought the phone to use and will do what it takes to keep it charged while I'm waiting for an APPLE fix.

If there was a fix in the wings Apple would be all over the media hyping how they are coming to the aide of all those with problems making themselves look good. In stead they crawled under a rock and hid !!! He is right all they care about is profit and their stock to announce they are selling phones with faulty batteries and hardware would cost them so instead they continue to sell a less that quality product with know problems to anyone who will pay the price and laugh all the way to the bank....They daily are committing fraud by selling phones that they know are faulty..I saw no where on the label or in the advertisement that the phone would not operate as advertised and had poor battery life and numerous other problems...

And I honestly don't understand why people keep saying that the Standby Time isn't important...it's there for you to save energy to use the phone when needed and to give you a reasonable autonomy. This is a very important question to me because I work on shifts and it's impossible to me to charge it every night!

If I have draining issues in Standby Mode (which is when it's supposed to save energy to use later), don't you think it's going to influence the phone usage?? You'll have less autonomy. That's why that's important to me. Besides, if you can live with something that doesn't work like it's supposed to, I just simply can't. Not when I payed 600€ for it! It has to work like it's supposed to!

Haha, Well maybe but... the battery is replaceable. Just not a snap off back but 2 screws. Apple Care will do it free when its less that 80% capacity, otherwise you can pay Apple. They are also available on internet stores.

Li-Ion batteries should last 3 or so years. Lastly, I understand the 0% is Apples cut off, not the point where the battery will be damaged. They stop it before it gets to that point to protect the battery.

I let my battery go to zero because i wanted to calibrate it.

    I suggested it to users.

Who cares if the battery goes bad. You will buy a iphone 5 later this year.

I see u are the type that jumps on the bandwagon.

U probably slept in a tent the night before eaiting for the doors to open.

Okay. Then you can run around charging your phone every 2 hours

If you refuse to follow the advice.

The 4s is my first iphone.

I refused to buy what everyone wanted because

They saw it on the news.

Android was great but the battery life was worse than the 4s

    I like the iphone though

But honestly, everyone will buy the iphone 5

So it really does not matter about the battery draining to zero

I agree, If you are unhappy and the iPhone wont serve your particular needs you should return it. I seem to remember tho that you were getting 2 + days of standby yes? So you are awake and no where near an outlet for 2 full days? Wow tough break man.

Who are you kidding?     Plug the bloody phone in and charge it when you are sleeping.   Or don't you sleep either?

BTW, standby time IS important, but it's not the end of the world.   I cannot imagine where you are and what you do where either a wall plug or car charger would't get you through the day.   How can anyone not have some access to either for an entire day?

Unfortunately Apple is and always has been silent about pretty much everything. And their history shows that they do make quality products and when there is an issue here and there (battery with new iOS) they resolve it. Again that's been their history. Are they going to stay that way? Well who knows but I know as a company, you have to do what it takes to deliver a product people want and support the ones that went out the door. No company would delibertly create a faulty product and say, "hey lets just sell the H** out of them and hopefully before people realize it has a problems we will have sold enough that it wont matter. And we dont really need to stay in business after that one right?"  Come on guys. Anyone who really honestly thinks that is off their rocker i'm sorry.

    I wish!

For quite some time, and with everything turned off, I could only get it to last 1day and 6 hours, with minimal usage.

It was only until yesterday, after a new restore (lost count of them!), that I got my best result:

    - right now i have 9% left (i'm letting it fully drain to calibrate), 1 day and 19hours of waiting time/ 16hours and 27minutes Usage Time (NOT REAL).

I can charge it while i'm at work, of course.

What I meant is that, as I work on shifts, it's going to be difficult to maintain a routine regarding the charges...it's easier to someone who works 8-17, uses the phone during the day and charges overnight...sometimes I'm sleeping during the day, sometimes I'm sleeping during the afternoon...it's random!

I don't like the idea of the phone dying on me, even when I'm asleep...and I also don't like to put it to charge when it's around 30/35%...I know that Li-ion don't have memory issues, but I also know that Li-ion batteries have limited cycle charges, so I try to maintain (as much as I can) the suggested routine: let it go to 20%, charge it. Once a month let it drain completely and charge.

    See what I mean?

    Cheers

When I go on my bi-monthly canoe-hunting trip down the river... I would insist on having my fb notifications gadget nearby! Always in style!

Yep I do. The real deal is to figure out what is using the phone so much when standby. Icloud, email. something is running causing that. Cant really tell ya what but I suspect some app you have on there. Anyway on the charging, you are aware you can charge anytime its convient right? Dont have to wait til it drops to a certain point. The technology allows for anytime charges and actually li-ion like to be topped off rather than run down. The cycles are not how many times you charge but how much so a 50% drain then charge 50% is only 1 cycle. As is a drain to 10% then charge 90% is a cycle.  Four 25% would be 1 cycle. See what I am saying?  So say if you happen to be at lunch and can plug in for 30 min or so do it! Wont hurt anything and you will be surprised how much a 30 min top off will do  Check it out here and Apple is not the only authority who states this. http://www.apple.com/batteries/  Certainly thats not THE fix but a help and hopefully iOS 5.1 will help you guys further.

That's my idea... I think the rogue app is the Mail App (don't have any other apps than those that come with the software, except Baterry Doctor Pro) because when I go tho the "Monitor" option of the Battery Doctor, sometimes the Mail App shows up...although I have everything concerning Mail set to Manual and Push Off and no accounts configured...

P.S. updated my post the same time you wrote about the charging matter

P.S.2 - Even when I don't have Battery Doctor installed, the behaviour is the same, so it can't be that...

I suggest that if you plan to leave anything turned on on any phone you buy, you will have the same problem as you have with the 4S[**].

** comparison applies to a phone with same little non serviceable battery showcasing more hardware and software technology than it can handle

Not comparing.  Based on prior experience, the more features you use, and the longer you use them, the less battery power remains to be used.  This is a fact of the physical/electrical nature of batteries.  It will apply to ANY smartphone you buy.
