Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

If you turn Bluetooth on, it will poll the Bluetooth frequencies looking for a device to pair with.  This takes rather more power than NOT doing that polling.  On my previous phone, just leaving Bluetooth turned on when not needed would shorten my battery life by 30% or more.  Since I only use Bluetooth in the car on long trips, I keep it turned off.  Just like I keep lights turned off in my house when I am not in that room, and shut off my car engine when I am not actually USING it.

    This is 'conservation 101'.

Your rigid thinking baffles me. Let me sum it up to you : off < on < on & active. What's so hard to understand there? The second aspect is that in some cases with this phone: on = on&active. Thirdly, specifications and PR don't imply that complicated maintenance has to be done and the non-geek user base doesn't have the skills to do it, and if they have the skills, then they're not given the proper tools in the OS (system monitor and proper logging facilities). Sure the battery page gives some hints, but they don't say to shut down iCloud or Siri or use the Gmail app for more efficiency, or that if you're a business user, Exchange might be a bit too much for the device to handle (maybe they could license a bit of WP7's code to solve that I guess). Fourth is that in some cases, there is no "off" setting i.e. 3G i.e. using 2G instead. Fifth is that they have to rethink the process by which apps can kill an OS release - have you ever seen an app killing a laptop battery through a desktop OS because it's not "optimized" for it - further sandboxing is required??? Sixth is that expecting the user base to not restore from a prior device is nothing short of a terrible blunder - you're expected to do that, especially if you're an Apple lover and have had prior devices - but here many have been rewarded with issues. So in the end this is not a seamless experience - it is not an Apple experience... Your lights on analogy is pure sophism and it was undone yesterday - conservation has to do with brightness settings and top UI switches, not intricate patterns which require sophisticated knowledge and such.

If you don't think it matters, leave it on.  It's YOUR battery, but Apple does suggest turning it off if you don't plan to use it.  Your call.

I am sure that Apple uses a newer chip than my 2 year old previous phone did, but it certainly DID use a lot of battery power with Bluetooth on, as did my previous feature phones.

Because you like analogies, you can imagine this:

An assembly containing a 11W fluocompact bulb and a 100W standard incandescant, triggered by a specific pattern from 8 different switches, which you don't know in advance. There is a defect in the first bulb which makes it use 100W instead of eleven, and sometimes it'll short the assembly. The second lightbulb works correctly but consumes 100W even when it's off. One time out of two, when both bulbs are lit, a third one turns on in another room. The assembly is delivered preinstalled and turned on.

Now what's your take on conservation 101?  Good luck.

If you have a setup like that, call a licensed electrician...  You wired it wrong.

Great,Great At last I have found the solution to my and your iPhone 4s 8-15% an hour drainage to make it almost 0.334% an hour in my case!!!!!!

I have found the best issue to the problem of double digit battery Drainage (even on standby) drainage on the iPhone 4s iOS

    5.0.1

Here are the steps (I have personally tried them and they really work)

    1. Connect iPhone to pc/Mac iTunes.

    2. Backup phone (right click then backup).

    3. Unplug phone from computer.

    4. Do a hard/factory reset (erase all settings and everything).

    5. Go through initial setup steps like language and region.

    6. Enable everything u need except raise to speak, Bluetooth and sending diagnostics info to apple.

    7. Connect back to computer and restore phone in iTunes (right click then restore).

    8. Turn off phone with spinning wheel.

    9. Completely recharge iPhone.

In my personal experience this reduces drainage from 8-15% an hour to 0.334% (in my case)

I have tested the drainage by leaving it overnight on standby from 100%, the. I woke up to a Magnificat 97%!!!!

    GOOD LUCK

I am happy if you are, but MOST users find it a bad idea to use 'restore', rather than sync, since restore just puts everything back like it was when you started....

Hey! You just described what sounds like iPhone 4s!  Except you forgot to mention "only on Tuesdays" for Option 3.    Is that posted somewhere on Apples battery page?

No APPS?   No email accounts set up?   No services running at all?    I'm sorry, but to me, that is empty.   A dumb phone with some music storage space..........    I know you are happy with the results, but you could have the same with a $40 flip phone.

Or shove it under your pillow. That should be similar to being in a pocket yes?

Have we really resorted to this? Much better  than my phone is better than your phone I will have to say. While we inpatiently wait for 5.1 to either dispell this issue or REALLY create a great thread.

[...]I know how crazy this sounds and I have been reluctant to make this post but for me there is a definite correlation.

I went back to build 9A405 and have verified that the phantom usuage is there constantly (regardless of where the phone is) but when I load 9A406 it seems that I only get phantom usage when the phone is not in my pocket.

    [...]

    Sanity alert lolllll.

More seriously, as someone pointed out, it could be you're inhibiting the signal when it's in your pocket, which in turn inhibits some power consuming process.

My theory is more in tune with the past... "in your pocket" is the way Apple wanted you to hold the phone for better reception. You're the 3rd antenna!!! So a solution to phantom usage may be that when people sleep, they could plug the headphones and tie the end to their wrist... to keep the battery in leash!

That is really sexy....It happened to me once on 100....It stayed on 100 for 7 hrs....There was another time when I charged the phone till 95 and it stayed there for 6hrs through the night....Since this point on, my battery improved on standby but failed while on usage.....It was nearly 60% the performance of the actual specifications.....

I guess after a few charge cycles, the battery picks up....

Exactly my point. You shouldn't need a license to operate a cell phone, especially one that calls itself "smart". I mean Apple nor any other manufacturer shouldn't need to crowdsource power management down to their user base. The user is not an ACPI interface or anything like that. If this thread had been using a form for posting the settings people are using, then you could turn it into a giant "mechanical turk" for  iPhone power management profiling. haha. Just an idea.

It's just really dumb. The phone drains the battery on standby, even if only 0.5%/h. So getting all excited on it remaining at any % for an extended period of time is like remaining in a state of puerile denial. It's laughable lolll.

That's why u I said to backup in iTunes (which backs up every single thing on ur phone) then restore it using iTunes after doing a factory reset.

So bottom line it is like ur restoring everything like it was before the battery drainage, but even u get to keep all ur settings and media and everything

I have read  a couple posts about the phantom usage. Below are the comments from 2 different posts/users:

"The phantom usage is seemingly down to a bug in the baseband that keeps it from closing network connections properly. The new baseband in 5.1 beta 3 seems to have fixed this bug."

    [same issue as above]

"Snitch connection to push.apple.com is too aggressive and prone to hang ups with socket open. The push.apple.com connection in netstat transmits most of the i-services - anything from find my phone to diagnostics. The problem is - it's very aggressive and often trips and stalls, especially if you are moving between data masts while it's transmitting. This results in the phone aggressively polling all possible backup connections and even mast jumping - as a result the phone doesn't properly sleep, often gets warm from background services trying desperately to request data connection through another mast and phantom "usage" stats grow when phone should be sleeping."

    [Another apparent issue]

"When you enable wifi, push.apple.com connection always stays on 3G.  When you enable wifi, the mobile data radio doesn't switch off. Not unless you manually switch it off. So basically - switching to wifi to save your battery, might result in bigger battery drain, because now you use two radios instead of one. It also means kb of data leaks from snitch connection when you're abroad."

The above "hang" seems to be what a lot of folks are describing and explains how it starts all of a sudden. Restore seems to fix because if your problems are caused by the bug in the baseband the software restore fixes it for a while. Hopefully this will in fact be addressed in 5.1 and soon all will have better more stable results out of your iPhones with iOS 5.

Again just something I have read a few places. I am certainly not that deep into iOS to know myself. Just thought would pass along a little glimmer of hope.
