Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Apple will take their sweet time to come out with the battery fix(if there is any), so instead of desperately hoping that the fix will eventually come with ios 5.1, you have another option, that is to j@ilbre@k your iPhone 4S and install the battery fix that is already available for j@ilbr0ken 4S. I had it installed and my 4S is now draining 2x slower than before. Of course it's still your choice to continue waiting to hope that Apple will fix it eventually.

What's the name of the battery fix app?

I have to say that using GPS to connect to a Radio Basestation or finding one is totally incorrect.

He probably thinks that because the phone does use the cell tower locations to augment positioning information when no GPS signal is usable.  Note that the 4S can also use the Russian sats., as well as the US ones to get a better position, so the cell towers are only used when no GPS signals are available.  Doesn't work the other way since GPS signals come from satellites, and cell towers are ground-based, and it is the signal strength, and quality which determines when tower is selected.

While I am sure that moving around requires more activity related to selecting cell towers for use, this should NEVER result in a great heat buildup under normal conditions.

As a second post. I am totally baffled at the energy consumption of the iPhone 4s. Picked up a 32gig yesterday on a new contract and was on charge till 5pm. Battery was at 100%. I have made 8 mins of phone calls, sent 2.2meg of data and received 17.6meg as of this moment today.

This would have been less this morning when i woke up but from 5pm to 6.30am this morning, the battery was on about 13%, so in 13.5hrs with little to no usage, 87% of my battery was drained. No games or anything. I have facebook and twitter on it.

My Blackberry Bold 9700 which i have just upgraded from would last a good two days at least and thats with playing games on and receiving emails constantly.

Pretty shocked at the 4s. This is my first venture into iPhone, i'll give it time but jesus its pretty bad.

I have an iPod Touch 4g which all of a sudden after a couple of months suffered badly from battery drain. Took it to an Apple Store who said the drain was too high and replaced it saying the iPod was faulty. My partner has a iPad2 which again has no problems with battery drain although that is a wifi only model.

My partner also picked up a 4s at the same time, i may put them together and watch the battery drain to see which is worse........

First, I am amazed by the number of people who seem to leave their iPhones unplugged at night, and complain about drain overnight.  That said, your usage does indicate a problem.  However, it might just be the fact that you have just about everything on that can be on, which is a bad choice on Apple's part.  Also, the battery charge isn't really very reliable until you have done a couple of recharge cycles to give the chip some reference values to work from.

Try charging overnight, then use it all day, and see how that goes.

Waiting is vastly preferable to losing my warranty.

So Danny, I have seen that also and you are saying it actually works?  So that further confirms than software/firmware is most likely the culprit.  BTW, actually posting about j@ilbr0king on an official Apple forum may get removed but thanks for the info.

    @sbailey4

Last night I downloaded the System Status app you talked about.I played around with it a little and was able to capture the following (I intend to carry out a more controlled experiment at the weekend). I alternated the phone from my pocket to a table every 45 minutes. After taking it from my pocket I would check the logs. All looked pretty normal (the phone recorded going to sleep, doing various checks every 15 minutes or so and eventually recorded me waking up the phone - there's quite a bit of info in these logs so I didn't want to clutter the post with the good looking data). After taking the phone off the table and before putting it back in my pocket I would again take a look at the log. Everytime I took it from the table the log had overflowed because there was activity every minute!!! Here is a 5 minute snapshot of the type of stuff that was going on. It is during this activity in standby that my phantom usage occurs:

While I cant begin to decipher all that data it is evident that stuff is going on while the phone is in sleep mode. Are you saying you did not have the same activity while in your pocket? That app logs a LOT of stuff. BTW, with the auto time set turned off, I still logged checking for time blah blah as posted but said cant set due to told not to. LOL. So apparently it still checks etc just doesn't not actually update the time because the user said not to when the switch is off. So I turned back on, if its going to check it may as well update. That also did not help the early morning usage. Same today as always so still baffled.

ruphunte42 indicated he uses the USB on his laptop to charge instead of AC adaptor and that does not happen to him. I may try that next just to see. Not sure what would be different other than 1/2 of the power.

turn on, turn off, return, should/shouldn't, couldn't, wouldn't, didn't, tap dance!

I hope something special happens when the thread hits 1M hits... Y2K bug, reset to 0, Tim Cook posting a video preview of the next iPhone, Scarface giving me some deserved points, something!

I suggest that before you reply to read carefully the posts!

    Yep Those are not facts.

    Yes, they are!

There have only been 3 releases on iOS 5. iOS 5 release, iOS 5.0.1 (9A405) and iOS 5.0.1 (9A406) update.

Please, read again my post very very carefully! I wrote "releases/betas" and not "releases"!

Again you are not stating facts.

    Yes, I am.

Lastly you cannot count alpha or beta or non released firmware/software when ranting that x, y or z is not fixed.

Yes, I am counting the betas too! That is the lamest excuse I have heard that one should ignore betas released by Apple for fixing the issues of iPhone 4s!

    That is idiotic logic.

Because I am counting the betas and not agreeing with you I have a idiotic logic. Right?

Are you actually saying that what costs battery life in the auto-set time component is not the network polling but the feeding of the results to the UI???? Or merely saying that the routine runs but just doesn't have network access?

That inspires the following question: can you disable displaying the time, battery meter icon, 3G/wifi icon, operator name and usage statistics from the UI and if so, does that yield better battery life?

I have to say that using GPS to connect to a Radio Basestation or finding one is totally incorrect.

    Sorry, your statement is wrong!

One may see easily that in iPhone 4s one has Settings -> Location Services -> System Services -> CELL NETWORK SEARCH which is by default ON and it is doing exactly that (i.e. using Location to search and connect to a cell network). If one has this ON and turns off the iPhone 4s and afterwards turns on the iPhone 4s then one could see easily that the GPS sign (violet arrow appears) is used for finding the network and the cell tower! Even worse, if one is inside the building the GPS wouldn't work and because of that iPhone 4s will get very confused and will take even longer to find a a cell network sometimes even fail to find one!

As I wrote before, it is very strange that a dumb phone can find easily and efficiently a cell network BUT iPhone 4s has the option to use GPS to find a cell network (Settings -> Location Services -> System Services -> CELL NETWORK SEARCH). It just shows that the Apple engineers are aware that iPhone 4s is not that good at finding a cell network and it needs help some time from the GPS to find it! My best guesses why Apple chose to do it this way is that:

    1) they do not have the knowledge how to do it, or

    2) Apple does not have the patent for the algorithm which finds efficiently and fast a cell network without the help of GPS.

Note 1: Using GPS to find cell network takes a lot of battery life unnecessarily!!!

Note 2: iPhone 4s is able to find also a cell network without using GPS but for this one has to turn off this "Settings -> Location Services -> System Services -> CELL NETWORK SEARCH"

Note 3: Settings -> Location Services -> System Services -> CELL NETWORK SEARCH is ON by default!

It's speculation but that would be the Samsung tech inside the Qualcomm chip. I hope one day we can read a book or watch a movie about that... along the lines of "On the Edge: The spectacular rise and fall of Commodore" (1st ed. only because of all the fascinating Vic20 stuff!!) - great book! Yep, being on the edge here would surely help hahaha.

In mobile world a manufacturer Y can manufacture and sell chips which for example are covered by Nokia patents but still the buyer of those chips should go to Nokia separately and pay for using the patents which are used in the chips. Shortly, it can happen that buying the chips does not mean that one gets a license to use it.

Anyway, Apple is quite "poor" in mobile telephony patents department (compared to Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Erricsson, etc.). Apple has a very short history of building mobile phones so it is no wonder that one sees childish mistakes like for example: antennagate with iPhone 4, battery life issue with iPhone 4s, static noise issue with iPhone 4s, etc.
