Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Anybody who had downloaded and installed the app from Apple, would it be possible for the rest of us to download. then we may be able to give these to apple or even compare usage reports on these forums to try and narrow down the problem

I've got to say that I don't get all the griping and moaning that's going on here. I had the same battery problem and so did 2 other iPhone 4S owners I know. We've all turned off 'setting time zone' in location services and have all now got long lasting batteries with everything else on the phone turned on. My stats are currently standby 1 day 1 hour, usage 2 hours 41 minutes, and the battery is at 57%.

It's worked for 3 iPhone 4S users I know, and has even improved my iPad battery life since upgrading it to ios 5. It's a software glitch and nothing more.

I have nothing helpful to add, just chiming in that I'm seeing the same issue.  My 4s will lose from 7 to 10% of battery life per hour just sitting in my pocket. I disabled Location Services, but it made no difference for me. I've tried disabling other services and tweaking mail settings, and done the shotgun approach of turning the majority of the smart stuff off, but no effect. I can't make it through a day on a charge as it is.

Hoping it's a bug, and that there's a patch soon. Working around it now by recharging a lot, but really don't want to live with that. I'd like to see better.

I, like many others, am experiencing very poor battery life with my 4S.  I know the 'Do's & don't's' when trying to preserve battery life on the iPhone, but nothing seems to have any great impact on preserving the battery's longivity between charges.  My iPhone usage hasn't changed since getting the 4S, but I'm noticing that I'm charging the battery 4-5 times a week (my iPhone 4 was 2 times a week).  I know there are new components in the handset, so more battery will be consumed to control the phone; however, the battery should withstand the increase in system resources usage without negative impact.

Removing the option to turn 3G off is a BIG mistake.

I think improvements to iOS5 will help, but for the interim, this really isn't acceptable.

    Again, check out http://www.macworld.com/article/163200/2011/10/troubleshoot_iphone4s_battery.htm l

About halfway through the article it gets interesting, and read the comments of all the people that found a solution to the problem.

Thanks the only tangible solution I have found so far

Interest my iPad 2 battery life has increased by 30% since installing iOS 5 even with calendars on.

I did the RESET and the RESTORE from iCloud first then loaded my iTunes stuff on it.  Went to bed and 10:00PM with 100% charge.

    Just Checked it around 8:00 AM this morning and it reads;

    Battery 97%

    Usage                     9 Minutes

Standby Time:     10 Hours 25 Minutes

Thats not to bad, but then I made a 10 Minute call and battery now reads at 83%!

That is a HUGE drop for a 10 minute call. BlueTooth Off, WIFI OFF, Notifications Off, Location service OFF and no emails added to iPhone at all yet.

    Yes, it helped indeed.

I must have had currupted calender/contacts files that caused my IP4s battery to drain very fast. My usage and standby time was almost identical. After manually deleting my Outlook contacts and my Outlook calendar on an restored IP4s without any apps all of a sudden the battery drain has stopped. I also de-activated "contacts" and "calendar" under iCloud. And deleted the iCloud calender and contacts data on my IP4s. I am a very happy IP4s owner now. I can confirm that this is not a hardware problem. My stats are currently standby 1 day 2 hours, usage 2 hours 37 minutes, and the battery is at 53%. Apple needs to fix this bug with an iOS5 update. Returning your IP4s won't solve the problem.

Those of you saying "I want a refund" should get one if you really feel that way.

The iPhone 4 has only been out less than two weeks and Apple's return policy for the iPhone is 30 days:

For iPhone returns, you may return your undamaged iPhone with its included accessories within 30 days of purchase for a full refund. Here’s the important part: returning your iPhone may not automatically cancel or reset your wireless account; you are responsible for your wireless service agreement and for any applicable fees associated with your wireless account. Please contact your provider for more information.

By the way, the battery life in standby for the 4S is rated in Apple's own published specs as 2/3 that of the 4, or 3GS for that matter.

From Apple's own chart (the columns are for the 4S, 4 and 3GS, respectively):

    Screen Shot 2011-10-26 at 6.51.09 AM.png

Note the quoted standby time: up to 200 hours for the 4S, up to 300 hours for the 4 and 3GS.

No, I'm not talking about those of you who've had a phone drain overnight, but rather am pointing out that even when working perfectly, in standby the published specs state the 4S will drain power around 33% faster than the 4 or 3GS.
