Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Trying to unterstand, what's going on with our 4S phones I started to gather the pros and cons both for the hardwre and software issue.

    Hardware issue pros:

    1. The phone has been out for more than 3 months, and it seems apple still couldn't find the problem neither solve it.

    2. Apple is very quiet about this problem since the latest update (also) didn't work for lots of people.

    3. Also the jailbreaker community failed to solve the issue (the advertised cydia app is fake!!!), but this can also mean it's a Baseband bug.

    4. The 4S tech specs say 200 hours standby compared to the 300 hours of the iphone 4 and the 3Gs, so apple MUST have known about the issue before release, so it can't be fixed with a sw update.

    5. Beta testers say that the phone has the drain issue even with beta 3 on it.

    6. Apple enabled the 3G toggle in the latest beta for 4S, so the battery life can be increased by switching it off, but it's just a workaround for the hardware problem.

    Software issue pros:

    1. Lots of devices are problem free,

"1. Lots of devices are problem free" points more toward a hardware issue (e.g. faulty components) than a software issue (e.g. iOS 5.0.1 las built is the same on all iPhone 4s)!

some were fixed by sw upgrades,

The thing fixed by iOS upgrades is the SIM card problems. The static noise issue (by the way have you checked if you are affected by the static noise issue?) which ia a hardware issue and the battery life issue on iPhone 4s have not been fixed yet by Apple!

    some by full-restore/charge-format

These do not work because after one performs the full-restore, resetting it will take a full discharge cycle to report the improvement in battery life BUT many people just to the full-restore and immediately report that their iPhone 4s has been for the last 3 hours on 100% battery but the battery indicator is not accurate and it is known that between 100%-92% the iPhone 4s last much longer than 50%-42%. Also this is a very good trick employed by the Apple stores who are able to send out of the shop (by doing a reset of a restore) the complaining customers becasue one cannot check on the spot if the battery life issue of their iPhone 4s has been fixed or not.

All I can see here is that many people who report that the battery life issue of iPhone 4s was fixed (or they have never had it)is  that they just got used with the miserable battery life of iPhone 4s (and they are happy to charge their iPhone 4s every time when they see a electric slot or an USB port in a day).

On the other hand I see that more and more people who are unhappy with Apple for vary reasons (bad customer practices in Italy for which Apple got fined, eggs thrown at Apple in China, workers' conditions in China, all work on iP* is done in China and not US, etc.). Obviously Apple does not care about customers who bought iPhone 4s and it confuses them with its workers. As one wrote here in the forum that the fine which Apple got slapped in Italy for bad customer practices is peants for Apple and I agree. It is peanuts for Apple and Apple could not care less about its customers.

I thought the same as you , but actually when i had a look on the device from the inside i did become sure it's related to the software

the battery is so huge man !!

The batteries of all iPhone 4s are fine by themselves. The issue with iPhone 4s is that is has faulty chipsets/components (e.g. 3G chipset) which draw more energy that they were supposed too! One can have the biggest battery in the world if one still is using it with a electronic circuitry which draw more energy than the battery can deliver!!!!

Here, in this forum, are many excuses for the shorter battery life of iPhone 4s because of a more powerful CPU and more powerful graphics chip. These excuses are not valid because there are many reports of people using their iPhone 4S without a SIM card and in that case their iPhone 4s lasted for 6-7 days!!!! One starts to get the short battery life issue when one is using also the "telephone part" of their iPhone 4s and especially the GSM network wtih 3G and Cellular data transfer (it looks like using CDMA network does not bring the issue of short battery life).

It looks like the battery life issue of iPhone 4s is a hardware issue which cannot be fixed by software. Already there have been 8 releases/upgrades/betas of iOS which didn't fix the battery life issue of iPhone 4s!!! How many more upgrades/betas/releases of iOS 5.x.x one needs in order to realise that this cannot be fixed by software?

I am pretty sure that soon after iOS 5.1 final is released many people will start saying/writting immediately that "for sure iOS 5.2 will fix the battery life issue". The next step after that will be "iOS 5.3 will fix the battery life issue". The hope dies last!

I have the static noise issue of course. I observed it: earlier I only noticed it while I was calling somebody and the call just ringed (the partner didn't receive the call). After he/she did, the noise was cancelled. Lats night I made a longer call (it lasted about 1 hour) and my phone was connected to the computer via USB cable (so it was charging) and as I started to feel the phone warmer and warmer suddenly the noise appeared. BUT! I took it away from my ear for a sec, and then back and the noise cancelled! Maybe it is in connection with the proximity sensor...

Looks like that the new MDM6610 communication chip causes the problem, or it is more likely the baseband sw, that utilizes it. The new switchable antenna design, the new chip, the fresh baseband (1.0.14 on mine!) together are a huge step forward, maybe the forecoming updates improve and optimize their way of function. I've found a very good review about the antenna system of the 4S, it'worth reading it!

Indeed the Qualcomm MDM6610 chipset looks like is the culprit and also the one which produces the arcing which one hears as a static noise. Arcing means also more energy drawn by the chipset. Also this chipset cannot be found on any other mobile phone right now except iPhone 4s.

or it is more likely the baseband sw, that utilizes it.

MDM6610 has some arcing happening so I doubt that any software can fix an arcing issue. Software can fix many things but in the end of the day there always will still be things which cannot be fixed by software.

Yes, I agree but this is a step forward more from a theoretical point of view (or how it should be). It looks for now that these advances are not translated into practice with good results due to vary reasons (manufacturing glitches, patents, incompetence, etc.) so one has battery life issues abd static noise issues with iPhone 4s.
