The Address Book's Edit>Edit Distibrution Lists command is grayed out and unavailable regardless of whether items are selected in Address Book (groups or all contacts). Unless I'm missing something this appears to be a bug. Hope it can be fixed as it's a very useful (and essential) function.

yep it is an icloud bug.
There is an excellent work around with minimal fuss here
choose the 2nd option: create local distrubtion groups.

The problem with this fix is that the moment you merge your Address book back with the iCloud account it only allows you to "merge" the data and it wipes out the changes you just made to the distribution list :-(
Create a bogus On My Mac contact while keeping iCloud as your default should allow you to edit distribution lists even on iCloud in Address Book. For some reason, a single local contact re-enables this feature when iCloud is present.

Thanks for posting this years ago. I update my office address book every December for my employer and needed to edit the distribution list (again). Forgot how to activate it and found your fix. THANKS!
