Q: macbook lost wi-fi, says no hardware installed

After installing Lion OS X, 7.5.2 on my Macbook Air, I started installing the newest iPhoto version.  During the process it stopped, eventually showed the words "an error has occurred".  Trying to restart the download, I found I had no Internet access.

Network diagnostics says wi-fi is not turned on. Clicking the button to turn it on has no effect. Network status has the work “failed” after all six items: Wi-fi, Wi-fi settings, Network settings, ISP, Internet, Server.

Wi-Fi icon at top of screen says “wi-fi: no hardware installed”.

Tried the following:

Apple hardware test: got error message 1005D. Can't find this online.

Reset SMC.

Reset PRAM and NVRAM.

Any ideas what else I might try before taking it in for service?

    Reset PRAM and NVRAM.

       1. Shut down the computer.

       2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.

       3. Turn on the computer.

       4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.

       5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.

       6. Release the keys.

Your computer's PRAM and the NVRAM are reset to the default values. The clock settings may be reset to a default date on some models.

    Reset SMC

       1. Shut down the computer.
       2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
       3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
       4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
       5. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

    I hope its work...

    Thank you -

I wound up taking it in for service, where they told me the wifi card had died.  Fortunately it was still under warranty.

I too am having the same problem.  I stumbled upon the following solution from a blog.  It worked for me:

Just UNCHECK that "Re-open windows when logging back in" button when you log out or shut down and then restart.
