Press both the on/off button along with the home button for 10 seconds.

    Screen will go black.

    An apple should show up.

    Release them.

    Phone will reboot.

If not, press the on/off button for 2 seconds and release.

    Phone will boot up.

    Should fix.

I have the same issue.  It seems like the phone is still on but the screen is still frozen. The first time it happened i followed the steps to swipe the bottom to unlock the screen, turn  phone off and back on and that worked, the second time it just stayed off. I've waited for the battery to drain completely overnight  and will plug it back in now. Phone also seems to heat up on the back. any ideas what is causing? It happened at the same time both days, and I had recently used siri to send text messages both times.

I just had the problem yesterday while on Safari.  I pressed and held both Home and On/Off buttons for 10 seconds and still didn't do anything.  I saw a loading icon stucked on the black screen but the icon was not running.  The phone heated up quickly that I had to put it against the a/c vent to cool it down.  I even tried plugging and docking and nothing happened.  It finally ran out of battery and shut down by itself before I had the chance to bring it to the Apple Store.

I bought my 4s two weeks ago and it has frozen on black screen 5 times.  I can reset as stated above...home and On/Off button, but it keeps freezing.  I have also had a big problem with battery drain.  I'm taking the phone back to be replaced.

donz, that's why I,m on here now. Down stairs watching tv, go for phone and the screen is simply black with a stuck loading icon in the middle.

I'm now restoring the phone which is a serious pain.

    I'm experiencing the same problem.

Twice now, my iPhone 4S was in a sort of "deep sleep" mode and has had a screen that would not wake up.

Underneath the blank and black screen, the phone itself seems to be working as I tried calling my iPhone from another phone, but my 4S still did not wake up, nor did it sound the ringtone.

By holding the on/off key and the home button for about 10 seconds, the phone started again (Apple logo) and asked for my passcode. Funny enough, it did NOT ask me for my PIN number to unlock the SIM card (which it normally does when I reboot my iPhone), so somehow that part of the phone has remained active.

As I said, this happened twice to me, both before and after the 5.1.1 update, so that doesn't seem to have anything to do with it.

The bad thing of course is that I don't know when my iPhone does into some kind of "deep sleep" mode, so when somebody tries to call me I'm unreachable, yet the other person trying to call me simply thinks I'm ignoring his call.

    Fulgurite,

I have the exact same issue as you ! Have you found a fix for this ?

    Thanks.

    Hi Nsoares,

No, unfortunately I have not found a fix for this.

Now, as a precaution I completely switch off my iphone at night, hoping that a complete power down every day will avoid a frozen iphone in the future.
