iPhone 4S camera lens rattle

Hey all,

I hoped they'd fix this slightly annoying iPhone 4 issue for the 4S, but it seems like it's actually become worse, presumably because the 4S camera has five lenses as opposed to the 4's four. Here it is:

Hold your iPhone 4S so that it's upright and tap near the camera lens on the back. You'll hear the same rattling sound that you probably knew and 'loved' with the iPhone 4.

However, can anyone else confirm that tapping on the front, just to the left of the Home button, also rattles the lenses? It does on mine and I'm sure it didn't on the iPhone 4. Irritating...

Thanks!

J

Yup I got it. My iPhone 4 didn't do it.

Did you have the same amount of rattle or did appear to be a little better in your replacement phone. Mine is a little more noticable, but I don't have any rattling when it vibrates. I'm debating on taking it to the Genius Bar today to see what they say, but if it appears that all the phones are about the same, I don't want to waste a trip or time.

Also did they say anything about it affecting the phone or camera itself long term?

Any suggestions?

The rattle is practically the same. It is just around the camera on the back. I can't really notice a rattle when it vibrates. You can take it to a genius bar and they will most likely exchanged it. I did it just to put my mind at ease, if you feel like you need to to make you feel better then go for it. But it is a wide spread occurrence so no need to exchange.

Bugger!....

Never thought on this occasion to check the apple community but I called Orange in the UK when I heard the rattle and they dispatched the phone the next day. Just unwrapped the new one and noticed the rattle on the new phone too. I really feel a little let down by a company with a usual eye for detail. Not sure about the lens thing, either "floating lens my arse" or a awful design choice. Can't wait for the iPhone 5 with the liquid battery that seeps out of the phone or the "removable screen" that's supposed to be loose to give a better visual quality :)

Poor show apple.

Hey,

Sorry, I just don't buy it - literally every single iPhone 3GS, 4 and 4S I've checked (dunno how many exactly, but certainly more than 15) has had the camera lens rattle. Are you tapping the phone on the back in the area of the camera (and on the front around the home button) or shaking it? Shaking it should indeed not produce any rattle. Tapping it absolutely should. And the fact that zooming the lens in Camera.app stops the rattle speaks volumes. As it were. 🙂

Cheers,

J

I'd be interested to know if you do tap up near the camera of you have any rattling. I think some rattling is more than others. Mine appears to be a little looser than it used to be but the camera is taking excellent pictures. It is an annoyance especially when you spend a lot on a phone but you exchange it you chance getting one that may be worse. I say you got a year through apple. It gets wise exchange the phone. I'm sure there are a few out there that aren't rattling but they will once they loosen up or are put down a few times.

Anyone find a fix yet?

That's pretty much what I think all the phones do. Not sure why they don't have some sort of secure position for the lens when not being used. Like I said above its an annoyance but I guess unless it's causing phone/camera issues I wouldn't worry about it. For those OCD people out there I simpathize with you. The 4s is a lot more noticeable and I'm finding myself doing the "test tap" all the time but I guess I just need to take my own advice and not tape the back and enjoy a great phone... Well until the iPhone 5 comes out. :-)

Jonny Apple Seed, I wish that was true, and I sure hope it is for you. Several of us have been told by the genius bar that it's normal and to just deal with it. If you get the same, I hear you have better lucky with phone support... haven't had a chance to try it myself yet.

It's sad really... looks like Apple is becoming just another manufacturer.
