Valid Apple ID but not iCloud account

When I try to log in to the iCloud control panel, it says

"Your Apple ID is valid, but not an iCloud account."

How can I set it up to be an iCloud account? Prefablely without my iPod.

iCloud-OTHER, Windows 7

As I said, you cannot use a Gmail address as Apple ID for iCloud. That's why you get this error message.

You should create a new Apple ID (here: appleid.apple.com ) which is an address in the form of username@me.com and use this for the cloud.

For your store purchases you can continue to use your Gmail ID.

And read this support item about where to set up which ID: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4895

I'm sorry cclloyd, I don't seem to understand.

Does www.icloud.com reject your new ...@me.com ID? Then I don't know how to help. Maybe someone else here knows or search in this forum https://discussions.apple.com/community/icloud/icloud.com or mail Apple support.

Or are you using an old MobileMe ...@me.com ID? Then you have to move your account to iCloud. Login to MobileMe and go to www.me.com/move

I'm currently using a @hotmail.com Apple ID that has been in use for years for all things I do Apple. I recently discovered the same error message on my Desktop "Cannot Sign Up: This Apple ID is valid but is not an iCloud account" after setting up iCloud on my iPhone and also logging into iCloud.com. However, when I setup iCloud on my Macbook all things went well. What would cause two identically configured Lion 10.7.2 machines to give an iCloud setup error on only one?

I have the same issue. Attempt to login using my email from my own registered domain and gmail account. Attempt to setup a @apple.com, or @me.com and it tells me that I can not.

I've spent over an hour reading other post of ppl having issues with Windows trying to use the icloud. I just wanted easy access to my music.

Looks like I'm going to stay a PC user.

I have the same problem. When I try to set up an @me.com account it tells me that the entire MobileMe website is closed. I have a new PC and I'm just trying to transfer my music using the icloud so when I can use this laptop to add new music onto my ipod without erasing it. My old laptop's usb port doesn't work anymore so I have no way of using that to still sync new music or even charge my ipod. I've been going round in circles for hours now re-signing in and veirfying emails and trying to make it work!!

Hey isabellemullen, it seems to me you have an old apple ID which is not a me.com address, right?

If so you have to set up iCloud with a new me.com address.

For store purchases your non-me.com, old ID can still be used.

Here is the support document how to do this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4895 (the link in the middle "Using one ID for cloud and one for store").

But read this first:

To get your music library from old PC to new PC you don't need iCloud. If you have a functioning port or a recent backup on an external drive or if you have everything on your iPod.

- transfer purchases from iPod to new PC http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329

- backup on external drive and restore on new PC http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751

You could also connect the PCs in a home network (ethernet cable) and move the whole library directly.

Wether you move the library or re-download via cloud, don't forget this:

- authorize new PC, deauthorize old PC http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1420

I hope you can manage, it's not so easy.
