I just combined two iPhoto libraries, and the result is a big one, 47,000 photos. Now it is scanning for "faces". I have the library on my external hard drive, which is rat-a-tat-tatting now for hours. Isn't there any way to stop "faces"? I'm afraid my external drive is going to blow itself up.

This is a huge problem! My external drive sounds like it is going to melt down. And when I tried to shut it down it said there would be a delay while it was indexing over 300 thousand items. I don't know how that could be, because it is about 7 times my number of photos. But I'm afraid to launch iPhoto now.
Would my only solution be to install An old version of iPhoto which does not have "faces"?
That wouldn't be a solution because the older version will not be able to read the newer format Library. It's unlikely that your drive will blow up.
How long is this faces scan going to take?

Do you think this would move faster if I moved the library back to the mac itself, instead of running off the external hard drive?
I know it's an older machine.
