How do you use your Alarm clock and not have your phone go off

My Blackberry , I would set the alarm, shut the phone off and then it would turn itself on when the alarm went off. It does not work that way with Apple. I tried setting the alarms and putting alerts to off and it did not go off.

Is there a way to use your phone as an alarm clock without letting calls or txts come through?

iPhone 4, iOS 5, Alarm clock on phone

If you turn on the mute switch on it will still vibrate when you get a call or text. Which is still loud enough to wake me exspecialy if it is on a table. I just put it in airplane mode when I sleep and the alarm will still go off. Just remember the ringer volume controls the alarm volume also, so make sure you have the volume up enough. I've used my 4 like that for a year now.
