Actually, antennagate made it really big yet apple needn't have to recall a single unit. It was definitely a design problem and affected customers. Apple overcame it by giving out hardware to cover the phone people bought. Customers merely bought the phone as it is and having to use a plastic to cover it is a compromise to the looks of the phone. Why dont apple design the phone with the plastic covers at the sides to begin with. It is not what customers want when they bought the phone based on what was advertised. Anyway antennagate will always be associated to apple iPhone 4 for years and decades for future generations to read about. Hence staticgate is nothing in comparison even though the problem may be worse off than antennagate. It is obvious that apple is handling the media really well this time. By right they should handle the customers better instead. Better still, start with the non problematic design and then keep a stringent quality control.
The noise is easy to replicate by using internet over 3G and hear the backcase around the apple logo. Maybe, during the call some users cannot hear the static or think that the noise is comming from the network..
Please, all of you who didn't notice this problem, make the test. Start facebook application, browser, mail etc..update one page and hear the back case. Any noise?
Recorded my iPhone 4S noise:

Do your phones sound the same?
That is exactly one of the noises we are referring to. 😠
I tested some things. Sending en recieving data over 3G static noise is huge. When I use WIFI almost zero static noise.
Apple please say something!!
Make sure you place your feedback here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
And paste a link to the youtube vid in there...
Or, if you got to an Apple Store, take the Youtube video with you, so they can hear.
And maybe print out this page, with the url and it showing 31 pages of replies from all over the world....
yep! that's it! 😟
I've found interesting link:

Seems like not all iPhone4s has static problem, or those people simply don't know what the static problem is all about.
Maybe Apple will come and give us free special bumper to cover the earpiece so we don't anymore hear anything.
Same for me.
I'm Italian: bought my 1st iPhone 4s (1st iPhone ever) at the beginning of november. Returned after 5 days because, since the first minute:
- it had a dent on the metal part between volume bottons
- it had a dent on the metal frame around the camera lens
- the plastic dock connector of the usb cable was heavily scratched too!
A very unfortunate item... anyway I didn't noticed the noise on it, maybe because I dind't pay attention during that days..
The new one has the static noise... exactly the same we can hear in the recording.
I can't return it now, because 15 days have passed... But If I could, I would think for a refund...
I don't know how you recorded that static noise but I want to say to you "Awesome Job"!!
I took back the 4S and got the Samsung GSII , I miss the Apple iOS but nothing else.
Just from the Apple Store.
I explained the problem and they blamed it on my O2 SIM card. Asked for replacement but they offered me refubrished item instead of new one since I've bought it from O2 and they've said they are running out of stock.
During way out of store seing some customer got brand new iPhone 4s. Out of stock huh ?
Totally dissapointed the way Apple treat their customers... It is probably time to switch.
Yup. Exactly the same.
While I hope that your unit is good, try using it while being on actual calls with the earpiece being used - meaning hold the phone to your ear as you would while talking to someone without using a headphone, etc.
Just to add my two cents:
Yes, Airfire that is the exact noise. Anytime I push data over 3G the noise occurs.
This is on an iPhone 4S Black 32GB AT&T (Wash DC). I brought it into the genius bar and I was told that if I swapped for a replacement phone it would void my 30 day option to return the phone altogether. With that in mind, I opted to protect myself by just returning the retail box, which reset my AT&T upgrade eligibility, then I went back to the store and purchased another retail box about a week later, thus preserving my right to opt back out. The same problem existed, so I returned that one also.
The geniusbar staff witnessed my problem and understood, though they said they had never seen/heard of this issue happening before. I used Voice Recorder from an old iPhone4 to make a recording of the most eggregious noises. I emailed it to them and requetsed that they pass it along to engineering. They didn't want to use speedtest.net (3rd party) so we did a satellite image Map app and scrolled around to pull data.
For now I will just stay on the sidelines until iPhone5 comes out. It takes several hours to Reserve, Pickup, Troubeshoot and return each phone, so I'm not going to do more than 2 roundtrips. I tried... <sigh>
As previously suggested, I also filed a iPhone Feedback report with Apple. My opinion is that although clearly this is a major issue, it may not be in the context of millions of iPhones. I don't have enough perspective on the macro stats. All I know is that 100% of iPhone 4S's that I got were faulty.
Good luck everybody.
I had really bad static and echo on my black 32GB iPhone 4S. Took it into the Apple store and they did some troubleshooting. Said they had never heard of the issue either. They swapped the phone out and gave me a new one. This one is fine. Perfect in fact. No static or echo at all now whereas my first one would have static every call and echo just about every call.
