Yes, it may be a new one or a refurbished one. in any case it is meant to perform as new.

I am, unfortunately, also experiencing  static on my 4S; even after I was given a new unit at the Apple Store and set it up as new. Hope the problem is fixed soon, it is the first time on 5 generations that I have had a serious problem with my iPhone.

    Hi Mike95,

I tried the finger on top during a call and sadly it does not stop or disrupt the static issue, at least for me it doesn't. I have a 16gb 4S on AT&T in North Carolina. The call quality on the 4S has been the worst experience I have had on a cellular device since I started using cell phones 12 years ago.

I spoke to an Apple person on the phone at iPhone support and while very considerate the options were: Send it back for a new replacement while putting a $699 hold on my credit card OR bring it to an Apple store and receive a refurbished device...

Hey Mr. Cook...Are you reading these posts? This is a **** of a way to come on board at Apple as CEO huh?

I am having the same issue....now in the process of getting the phone replaced. Keeping my fingers and toes crossed. Very disappointed in seeing a drop in quality of the product.

@Matthijst I have recorded that exact same sounds. I sent the recording to an Apple rep a day ago. He told me that he will send them to the engineers at Apple. When I call them tomorrow I will also point to your recording on youtube as well.

But I'll say it again, I have emailed my recordings of the sounds directly to a contact at Apple. Lets see what they do now.

I bet if I go back to the Garden City Apple store now they won't be so hard headed about it it any more.

    Hey

I'm on my 5th iPhone 4S.  Same issue.

I went to the Apple store in Downtown Montreal.   The Apple genious there aknowledged the issue, he told me that Apple is aware of the issue.

As i exited the Apple store with my 5th phone, I received a call from Apple support asking me to send my phone to the engineers at Apple.  I went back to the store.  After a long exchange between the support supervisor and the Apple Genious, my phone is on its way to Apple engineers.

If only they aknowledged the issue the 3 times I went to the Apple Store.  I'm on my 3rd iPhone 4S and every single time I went, I spoke with a different Apple genious, and neither of them were even aware of the issue.  My 3rd visit there, at Victoria Gardens store, the Apple "genious" was extremely rude and was implying that nothing is wrong.  He told me, "it's a cellphone, it's not a land line, it's going to have issues".  He was talking to me as if this was my first cellphone I have ever gotten.  I've had cellphones for years and years and the iPhone 4S has the worst quality calls I have ever experienced.  An iPhone 4S is a great idea, but a horrible execution.

    Hello all,

    I'm having the same issue.

The static I hear sounds like a sporadically changing high frequency low volume noise. Sometimes it goes on and off during a call, and I believe that I have had some success changing the way I hold the device to reduce the static. However I haven't had it happen enough that I can conclusively relate the static and the position my hands are in.

I have a feeling that it may be related to the "intelligent antennae switching". Hopefully this can be remedied at the software level. No proof of course..

I did some tests with friends and it shows that the 2 whites iPhones 4S had statics and the 2 blacks didn't have any!

Unfortunatly, I've got a white one and it's my 3rd one...

Have you all of you guys white iPhones 4S?

I am having the same problem. I called AT&T yesterday and they told me to return the phone for a new one and that I was the first person to make that complaint. From the looks of things, I am definitely not the first one and exchanging the phone will not really help the problem . Are we getting any help with this? I had my 3g for 2+ years and never had this problem.

I really think this is a universal issue on all 4S devices, people who say they don't have the issue is because they have never been in a quiet enough environment to test it. It needs to be dead quite otherwise the sound tends to just mix in with background noise.

I'm having the same issue. I want to go exchange my phone but after reading this thread, the replacments all have the same issue. Being that my current phone deosnt seem to have the abttery issue, I might hang on to it for a bit longer and see what becomes of this issue.
