Nov 4, 2011 1:56 PM in response to Matthijstby minimax55,Yeap.... Can I use your mp3 static noise file to contact Apple service and others ?
-
Nov 4, 2011 2:01 PM in response to minimax55by Matthijst,Yes please!
I uploaded the mp3 file so people can use it when contacting Apple, as I read it's hard to replicate the problem in the Apple store (or it's hard to hear it in a noisy environment)....
Shouldn't be too hard to hear when you play the mp3 to a genius through a headset : )

Nov 4, 2011 2:10 PM in response to JamiDianneby Matthijst,Just found out: if you put the back of the phone against your ear and then put it in airplane mode, you hear the noise (every time so far). And if you then disable airplane mode you hear it again...
As if you hear the chipset power off an on again ><
(the airplane toggle switches when you let it go, so just switch it and keep your finger on the screen, then push the phone against your ear and release)

Nov 4, 2011 2:14 PM in response to Matthijstby robbiecampbellsoup,I can confirm what Matt is saying here.
The same noise is present on long calls in quiet environments.
It's quite annoying. Must be the Qualcom chip.
If this issue is a hardware issue, I'm going to return the phone.

Nov 4, 2011 2:25 PM in response to JamiDianneby Matthijst,Did another test: if I take out the SIM card and then put it in airplane mode... when I take it out of airplane mode again I no longer hear the static noise, but now I get a ticking noise (kinda like the seconds on a watch, but a bit faster). This ticking continues until I insert the simcard, then it's back to the static again.

Nov 4, 2011 2:50 PM in response to JamiDianneby Red 2,Received my replacement 4S 13 days ago as a sealed box from Orange UK. First unit had terrible static.
This unit has NO static or interference whatsoever and has been used every day for at leat 30 mins and in several locations in the UK.
Both phones have/had a Casemate barely there case and identical systems settings so they can't be the cause.
Undoubtedly a big issue (just look at this thread) but, somehow, there are units that are not affected.

Nov 4, 2011 2:57 PM in response to JamiDianneby Matthijst,I wonder if it might be a bad batch of iPhones, and people who got a replacement just got another previously returned phone with the same error back... Not sure what Apple does with returned phones to refurbish them, but judging by the reactions people got from their "genius" they don't hear it in the store, so maybe they just DFU restore the phone and give them to the next customer as refurbished?
It's kinda strange you can hear the static when you put the phone in airplane mode and take it back out.
I just tried another sim card (T-Mobile instead of KPN) and I also get the noise with that sim.
Going to Hong Kong for holiday in 3 weeks. They just got the 4S there so I guess I'll make a genius appointment.
I assume I can get a replacement phone (nearest store now is 100 miles away, so might as well wait it out)?
Do you get a new receipt when you exchange it? Or don't they ask for a receipt and just check the registration date?
If I were to get a new unit that turns out to be defective as well, could I just return the new HK unit again in Germany (nearest
Apple Store)?

Nov 4, 2011 11:20 PM in response to minimax55by Red 2,3G all the time.
For ref. it is a 64gb Black unit and I have location settings on with the exception of 'system time zone' ( to improve battery life pending the IoS bug fix. That would be the only change in settings between the two units.

Nov 4, 2011 11:30 PM in response to Red 2by minimax55,I have it off too all the time. Oops, Apple service would have hot days if this hardware issue. On this forum are not every iP's users. So, on monday I call to service and voila. Unfortunelly in country that I stay now is only Apple Store Online. I nshould go to Dresden for persinal meeting but don't have time for that.

Nov 5, 2011 12:47 AM in response to minimax55by Iggy_Pod,I'm on my 4th iPhone 4S and they all have had static. Also, all 4 phones had a volume problem (jumps extremely high right after use of Siri). I'm a little tired... just waiting for an iOS update.

Nov 5, 2011 3:40 AM in response to minimax55by Metralha,I´ve bougth my iPhone 4s from uk and I too have the same problem. Now I am actually in Portugal so this as nothing to do with carriers. But this is definitly a hardware problem, because even when the call is over you can still ear the static/crackling sound in the back.
