My wife doesn't hear it either ><

I Let her hear the phone while on a call and the recording, but she thinks it normal (not in denial, she just doesn't hear it).

I also think there's a group of people who just flat out deny it even if they do hear it; scared that their $700 dollar phone is a piece of crap and it makes them look stupid...

Or Apple fanboys who refuse to say anything bad about Apple: I've had people tell me that losing 20% batterycharge in a night of 7 hours standby is normal and there is no battery issue, even though Apple themselves achknowledged the issue ><

I've read about half of the comments so far on this... Just wanted to add; I am also getting this interference...

I can hear it on phone calls when the phone is not using 3G; I can hear it in videos I record when there is no noise in the room (I guess that puts the mic on max volume) so a slow pan around my room, when palyed back, has this classic mobile phone interference soundtrack to it...

So the interference is not just limited to the earpiece on a phonecall; it goes all the way to the mic at the other end...

If Apple fix this; they will have to reduce the power, I would imagine, to the antenna; and doing so would reduce signal / call quality...

This is probably another antennagate-esque issue that will not have a real solution... My sister's 4S doesn't seem to have the same issue though. I can probably live with it but it's ruined what was left of my confidence in Apple products...

They evidently don't have enough internal shielding and will never admit to this... If people are receiving replacements with the same issue; it can't really be a bad batch... Then again; alot of people who have their volume all the way up wont notice the interference as the background hiss is louder...

    To All,

Get a different manufacturers smartphone, I did, static is gone. I LOVED with exception to the static everything about the iPhone 4S, but if Apple is going to phuck around with this and drag it out...which they are, I seeked another alternative and I am fine with it for now.

Let's see what Apples 5th rendition does or doesn't do......

I had that static on about 5/10 calls this week. I had a 1hr call with no static and the very next one it was there. I then tried my SIM in the old iPhone 4 and guess what, the static was there too. It was faint, but it was there. The earpiece volume on the 4S seems to be louder/clearer which has me wondering if that is why we are all noticing it now.

The static I hear doesn't come from the earpiece, it comes from within the phone somewhere.

I am from Germany and have a iPhone 4S 64GB and have the same static problem after 15 to 20 min. talking time.

I always use the headset which was supplied together with iPhone.

SOLUTION: Once press the "Loudspeaker" Button on the iPhone and to switch on the "Speakerphone" and then switch it off again (= the Speakerphone) --> NOW the static disappears and everything is well again .... until the static might appear again after some time.

    ADVANTAGE:

You do not have to terminate the call :-)

    +1

I also experience this kind of issue. Most of the calls start with an echo of my own voice. I can't hear anything else even if the call connects and reciever hear my voice. Also found the "solution" of switching speaker mode on/off.

For the record..I live in Sweden, Tele2, iPhone 4S 16GB Black.

What to do? Shall I contact Apple in this matter or my operator? Software/Hardware related? For now I don't think it's a working phone at all, I have to use my old 3GS to make calls =/

I have purchased TWO iPhone 4s last week and made the first call from one to another, both using Apple headphones.

After 5-6minutes the echo appeared and become more prominent (heard on both sides) within a further minute or 2 Shortly after, the screeching sound (audio distortion) can be heard (by both caller and recipient). Being already aware of possible problems with audio, I used a “Speaker on/off” solution but it only lasted less than a minute before problem reappeared again.

When we unplugged the headphones the problem disappeared, however when headphones were re-connected again the problem re-appeared. Eventually I re-dialled to the other caller however, the issue with audio/sound distortion was still present after 4-5 minutes!

I hope this bug is resolved soon as the primary way of communicating for us is making daily calls of long duration, 20-30 minutes, utilising headphones! Otherwise the iPhone 4S for us is rather useless!

(Previously used iPhone 3 with no problems using the same carrier and sim cards)

I think this topic was mainly about static when using the phone without a headset.

The echo issue is different (although it might be related).

Do you also hear static coming from the phone when you make a call (best heard with the back of the phone against your ear)?

So I have this same issue; the buzzing noise and clicking that is coming from the phone (can hear with ear to back of phone when checking emails or making call) and this noise is picked up on video recording...

It's not interference as it doesnt affect the loudspeaker; and I think shorting an antenna forces the new chip into a different mode where the noise gets reduced.

    This doesnt affect every handset.

So I called Apple aftersales today as I am within my 14 days and they are going to send me a replacement.

Hopefully I will have it soon and hopefully the replacement will not have a yellow screen (lol)

same problem here .. but only when I make calls with my €100 sennheiser inear-headset. making calls without earphones/headsets or with the earphones apple shipped with the iphone 4s works just fine.

the earphones are ok because I used them with my old iphone 3g and had no problem whatsoever. listening to musik/podcasts or watching videos also works fine with sennheiser + iphon4s.

in an hifi forum people explained, that the earphones can't be the problem because they are passive .. earphones with a good quality might show they problem because they provide more details and amplify a bad source-quality much quicker than average earphones do... which makes sense.

my guess is that this is some kind of hardware problem, bad output quality or bad shielding when making calls. and in certain circumstances the bad quality gets amplified to a point where the user notices it...

Same problem here, just got the phone a few days ago directly from the Apple Online Store.

    iPhone 4S 32GB, Black

    Austria, Carrier: 3

Very annoying. I hope 5.0.1 will fix this soon if it's not a hardware problem.

I think you have a problem; but maybe slightly different. Sounds like your headset is amplifying interference from GSM/UTMS signal maybe; the problem here is that you cannot shield that in the phone because that is the signal coming out of the phone; and the shielding needs to be in your headphones / headset / cable. The ones Apple supply are shielded, as far as I know, from radio interference.

What I have found is that my phone actually buzzes inside, and so have others found this...

You don't have to even make a phone call; you can just check emails and put your ear to the back of the phone and you can hear it buzzing; this bussing can be picked up on the video camera also in the audio...

I think it's the actual Qualcom chip; ot the A5 (less likely) being a noisy chip; a bad batch maybe...

I have a replacement coming and I hope it is not the same; my sister's is fine and so is my friends...

I am glad this thread is getting bigger. I can't believe the buzzing that is occuring in every single Iphone 4S. Did apple not test these phones, or are the apple engineers all deaf. Unfortunately the only thing to do is wait and keep bugging the apple geniuses, until apple acknowledges this issue. We need more media outlets to report on this as these are serious issues.
