Nov 23, 2011 3:18 AM in response to niteshawkby BasWind,That might be a reason for a lot of people not experiencing the static (being still on iOS 5.0 I mean). Is there anyone here that hasn't installed iOS 5.0.1 yet (problably not )?
Here you can read how to downgrade to an earlier version of iOS:
I'm picking up a new iPhone 4s this afternoon. It'll problably still have iOS 5.0 on it. I'll keep you posted.

I've tried and for both situations, the phone is dead silent.
I don't know very much about iphone components, but my guess is related to 3G component. Does anybody opened the iphone? Without a case, the noise is louder and easier to identify.
Or...Does anybody tried with a sim card form a different carrier?

Nov 23, 2011 4:16 AM in response to arcadiealdeaby Matthijst,Had the problem on 5.0 and 5.0.1 (tried both beta's as well).
Opened the iPhone and yeah, you hear it better, but can't identify which part causes it, or make it stop

Nov 23, 2011 4:28 AM in response to Matthijstby basslines,As users and consumers, it is hard to know the technicalities, We can make guesses but it may be to no avail. It is apple who should be working hard to solve the problem for us before it becomes a bigger problem for themselves. but if you are interested, you can read up AnandTech's website that shows some pretty picture and differences between the iphone 4 and 4s parts. This may give us some clue as to why iphone 4 does not have this problem when iphone 4s does.
The link is http://www.anandtech.com/show/4971/apple-iphone-4s-review-att-verizon/2
My guess is the Qualcomm chip that was changed. This may be an unfair guess...

Nov 23, 2011 6:05 AM in response to shawn126by M.A,I stated way earlier back in these static threads that Apple will play stupid and tell many if not all that they never heard of this static issue before. Sad but it's how the corporate world operates today.
Go buy the Samsung GSII, heck of a device.

Nov 23, 2011 6:25 AM in response to JamiDianneby BasWind,I've just picked up a replacement. It's running iOS 5.0 and it doesn't have the static while using the earpiece (usual use of the phone ;) ). It does however have the static when holding the Apple logo to my ear.
I don't usually do that, so I'm fine. Maybe the issue is energy related and the battery drain in iOS has something to do with it?

Nov 23, 2011 6:37 AM in response to BasWindby arcadiealdea,After few calls you will notice that the static appears during phone calls.
I didn't hear the noise for the previous three calls, but 5 minutes ago I had a conversation and the static was there.
I had all conversations in the same room, and each of them last for 5 minutes..

Nov 23, 2011 6:38 AM in response to BasWindby niteshawk,Cool. I don't mind if there is static sound when holding the Apple logo to my ear as long as I am able to make a call without hearing that annoying static sound.
But there are still 3 possibilities:
1. Actually you do have static when placing calls but it simply doesn't occur yet.
2. You've got better iPhone 4s with no static issues
3. Indeed iOS 5 has less problem with static than iOS 5.01
Maybe you need to use it a lot more, and then upgrade again to iOS 5.01 to check if the problem comes

Nov 23, 2011 6:43 AM in response to niteshawkby dxironman, you know what's funny/sad? my replacement 4s with the awful static actually gets good battery life. as good or better than my 3GS. i have a feeling this is going to be widespread and definitely hardware releated and they'll have to do a recall.

Nov 23, 2011 6:46 AM in response to JamiDianneby - fabius -,for what I know, problems like this are not related to sw issues.
It's probably a hardware issue, and in that case no iOs upgrade could resolve the problem.
Until it's covered by warranty, Apple should exchange it.
The question is: they give you a refurbished one, or a brand new piece?

Nov 23, 2011 6:47 AM in response to JamiDianneby BasWind,Yeah, it's back. That was short-lived :/
Let's hope Apple is indeed working on the problem.

Nov 23, 2011 6:49 AM in response to niteshawkby Kliffy,Today apple thankfuly replaced my iPhone with new one so I decided not to use it I'm gonna sell it because there is a big chance I might end up with static and the pale yellow washed screen again :( And so far I'm very impressed with my SGS2 :) thanks again Apple maybe next time.

Nov 23, 2011 6:50 AM in response to - fabius -by dxironman,i think if it's a hardware issue from the get-go they *SHOULD* replace it with a new one. they're going to sell people a defective piece of hardware and end up giving you a refurb in it's place? that would be the last time i did business with Apple.
-
Nov 23, 2011 6:55 AM in response to dxironmanby - fabius -,I totally agree with you.
Here in Italy they give you a brand new one (or refound) within 14 days (so they did the first time, when I returned the 4S due to dents on metal parts). After that period, there is the one-year warranty: so they could also repair it...
Great phone, but really inadmissible problem!

Nov 23, 2011 7:10 AM in response to dxironmanby basslines,"that would be the last time i did business with Apple."
This is so true. The keyword here is "business". No one wants to do business with someone who says "I provide full warranty for the phone that I sell you, but if I can't solve a problem with the phone, I'm sorry".
