If this is really the problem then probably they can solve the problem by deactivating automatically the data during call. and activating it again when call is finished.
Only problem is when we use Skype for calling without Wlan.

Nov 23, 2011 7:29 AM in response to niteshawkby slind,Yeah, or when doing voice recording or recording a video etc. Its present in every application that uses an active microphone.
So this is not going to help.

Nov 23, 2011 7:36 AM in response to BasWindby - fabius -,In my experience, the problem surely occur when I make phone calls in area with wifi coverage.
Next time I'll make a call with no wifi coverage, i'll check the noise!

Nov 23, 2011 7:36 AM in response to niteshawkby basslines,A phone should work "as is" out of the box. No compromise is needed to make it work if it was designed properly.

Nov 23, 2011 7:40 AM in response to basslinesby slind,It's dead simple:
With Cellular Data (3G / Edge) deactivated, phone calls speechnotes or video recordings do not have static noise! Wifi can be left activated. That's no problem.
With Cellular Data enabled, every microphone using application has the problem of this static noise. For me this is a problem with defective hardware, wild guess would be no proper shielding.

Nov 23, 2011 7:45 AM in response to slindby arcadiealdea,I still have 2 questions:
1. Anybody tried with a different SIM card?
2. Is it possible that a large number of phones have this problem and users aren't aware of it? I read couple of messages from people that listened friend's phones, static was there, but the owner doesn't care..

Nov 23, 2011 7:56 AM in response to JamiDianneby BasWind,I've tried 3 different sim cards. Same problem on all cards.

Nov 23, 2011 8:01 AM in response to BasWindby Matthijst,Tried 2 SIMs, had the noise with both cards.
Not sure why some have it and some don't.
I think it might be related to environment or 3G reception, as I seem to have it more in some places than in others.
It is strange that some users have exchanged their phone a few times and still have the problem (but probably at the same location). And some users told their colleagues who didn't notice it at first that their phone also had the problem (so they also experienced it all at the same location).
If it's not location related I guess either we're incredibly unlucky, or all phones have the problem and some user just don't (choose to) hear it.

Nov 23, 2011 8:32 AM in response to JamiDianneby niteshawk,Just want to add something.
Was at O2, I could not really reproduce the static sound there nor even convinct the people there that I have static problem on my iPhone. He took me to small quiet room and the problem didn't occur.
I didn't know if there is wlan there, but my signal bar was really full (5 bars)
But when I'm in the office or at home, where I'm in wlan coverage, and signal is relative weaker (3 bars) the problem really hit like crazy.
Not sure if it is coincidence ...

Nov 23, 2011 8:44 AM in response to niteshawkby dxironman,it seems like its definitely 3g. in airplane mode it goes away. i've tried every setting individually, disabled everything else and it remains. and yes, alot of people just aren't noticing it or are ignoring it. if you're not in a quiet area it might be hard to hear but it is there

Nov 23, 2011 8:48 AM in response to niteshawkby CoryAM,Looks like a lot of you are newer to this thread and so I will reiterate some points discussed earlier in the 30-someodd pages here.
I have the same static/buzzing/crackling issue and have had it now on 3 phones. My girlfriend's phone, which was bought at the same time from the same store, only difference being in white, was and is still unaffected. We can be in the same area, under the same 3g connection and have differing experiences. If we swap, I hear no sound and she hears the sound my phone makes. CONCLUSION: There are good(problem free) phones out there, though it's likely to be a smaller number than we'd like.
As you are experiencing, the problem is related to the 3g antenna because when you turn wifi off and stream data, it can be heard louder than usual.
Returning your phone for a new one does not guarantee a better experience. I am heading in to the apple store today to talk about my issue and am prepared to return the phone(I am still within 14 day window).
There are a number of manufacturers of parts for apple, even different manufacturers for the same part. My guess is that one of those manufacturers has a faulty part and apple is tight-lipped about this because admitting it would mean a total recall for the iPhones with the 3g antenna from said manufacturer. Since this "****" hasn't hit the fan quite yet, apple is not prepared to comment.
So please, write to apple, contact the press and write to them about your experience. The more media coverage, the likelier apple will respond to them and it's customers. I would love to own a 4S, but it doesn't look to be in the cards for me at this point. Good luck, everybody!

Nov 23, 2011 8:58 AM in response to CoryAMby niteshawk,I agree that Apple must be pushed to solve this problem. How to attract more media coverage ? should we make group on facebook to get all together on this issue, and when the group is bigger and bigger we can push Apple more and attract more media attention ?
