Yeah, also hear it in the vids, but not nearly as loud as during calls.

Still hoping Apple will resolve things with a firmware update. It looks as if you can make the static shift or disappear by changing the way you hold the phone; put a finger near the top of the phone and it stops or becomes quieter...

Or they could just bring back the switch to turn off 3G (yeah, I know it's been said that it can't be done with the new chip and all, but there must be a way to do it otherwise people without 3G wouldn't be able to make a call either).

I know this is beating a dead horse, but I just made another recording of the static sound with low background noise(my voice, heater and a computer 3 feet away). The sound is still apparent(more apparent before the upload). In case anyone is interested:

im on my 3rd iphone 4s 64 gb and they all are doing this.

    this is unacceptible.

it is the data chip - when i turn off cellular data, or if im in a 2g area, it doesnt happen for me.

Guys, look at the end of the article, last paragraph : http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/23/irl-google-voice-fastmacs-u-socket-and-return ing-the-iphone-4/

Apple will have to solve the problem because this kind of article is going to multiply ...

I'm on my 4th replacement, same static problem here in France.

4S is a complete desillusion as far as i'm concerned : static noise, yellow screen, backligt beeding on the top of the screen, network dropping ... All the devices that i had exhibited at least one of these problems.

I'm an iPhone user since the first model and this is the first time i'm really disappointed. What are you doing Apple ????

Don't forget to leave your feedback to Apple, this problem is unacceptable fo such a high priced device.

I have exactly the same problem. I bought 3 iphones 4s 64GB AT&T unlocked, and they all have a white noise ( static) on both coming and outgoing calls. 95% of my calls have static sound, while 5% only with a clear voice. It is not loud but it is annoying and I can notice the difference in the voice quality between iphone 4s and iphone 4.I hope Apple can fix this issue.

Seriously Apple... this was the last launch Steve oversaw - don't make it a failiure.

It's doesn't make me comfortable knowing there is electric static being produced by an item that I place next to my ear frequently.

I saw two 4s today. Both have the noise, but the owners didn't notice it

Many people buy iPhone just because is so... so iPhone, so trendy, so cool...They don't care about yellow tint, buzz, rattling, loose buttons, and so on.

Other people (the contributors to this thread) buy iPhone after product comparison, and because its specs are very interesting: this kind of customer notice such problems and is disappointed!

What will Apple do? Become just a "cool" manufacturer, or trying to keep the high quality level of their products (considering the high cost compared to competitors?)

    Hi there,

i have the same problem here in Germany, Hambourg. I wrote an feedback to Apple and went yersterday to the Apple Store in Hambourg. There the Geniusman had never heard about this problem and can't heard the noise, because it was a little bit loud in the store. But he was willing to change my iPhone 4S. I said that i want to wait for one or two weeks to have a better chance to get a issue-free iPhone. I hope that i don't will become a refurbished iPhone in one week ...

    Maybe

I have a 4S on AT&T with the buzzing. I never noticed it on my old 4, but I tried the same SIM in the 4 just in case. Guess what, - the buzzing in the earpiece was there but not as loud / noticeable. With a video recording in a silent room, I didn;t really hear anything that stood out but it wasn't exactly a silent recording either.  It is much more noticeable on the 4S videos.

I don't really hear the buzzing on the back of the phone just using 3G as everyone describes here. I do however get it in the earpiece during calls. Same annoying sound, different circumstance. Maybe there are a couple of different sources/issues being put in one thread. My guess is, *some* of the noise complaints may be network related. I read somewhere else the earpiece is louder on the 4S making something that's been there all along, more perceptable.

Not saying anyone is wrong, just keep an open mind and test your device fully before drawing any conclusions.

I don't know what to add to the comments.  I'll say it is actually good to hear that I'm not alone with this issue ... so, I appreciate that.

I've had 3 4s replacements and they have all had this issue.  The genius bar folks have said they will not replace the phone again for the same problem.  I guess I'm at a dead end till someone in the community figures out a path forward.

Been a loyal Apple fan for over 10 years.  Am feeling a sense of disappointment and betrayal at the lack of acknowledgement from Apple ... they're making it sound like I'm the problem.
