I did a quick test yesterday, here is the results:

    - I made a call ( conversation ) with no wifi and cellular data ON

       - I am still able to hear the static.

    - I made a call ( conversation ) using Viber with only wifi and cellular data OFF

       - I am still able to hear the static.

I will keep you updated if I notice anything that might be helpfull in this issue.

I have used iPhone 4 for more than a year. Never notice any static problem. It might have static problem as mentioned, but since I never hear that sound in any activities when using it then I can simply ignore it. iPhone 4 indeed has another problem with its antenne.

Just called Apple Store again, and had bit chat with the technician, I complained about the way they rejected me by offering me refubrished item, and she said that it is true policy when the phone is out of stock. I asked again how can you run out of stock of your main product, and she said that iPhone 4s sold like crazy.. everyone buys it.

Another fact that she told me was that not all iPhone 4s has this static problem, althought she admitted quite large complains she had already. Again she tried to convince me that Apple is aware about this problem and is working on it. Next patch would solve the problem which she hopes to happen in near time. At the end of conversation she tried to sell Apple protection plan to me. What a nice try.

Honestly I am bit skeptical about it. I am 100% sure this is hardware problem. I think it is not going to be easy to solve by update.

I am organizing to return back my iPhone 4s in this Saturday to O2, if it goes smooth, then i would rather wait before buying another one or probably going for Nexus.

    Lets see...

I'm returning my iPhone 4s today. The lack of response from Apple along with problems with my other iPhone's did it for me.

With the iPhone 3G I had the little cracks in the back, with the iPhone 4 I had a bad proximity sensor, non functioning homebutton and antennagate. Now the static in 2 iPhone 4s's and no formal response from Apple whatsoever.

All my computers are Apple computers, I have an AppleTV 2, an iPad2 and some other Apple stuff and I love the ease of use.

But because of all this **** and the way Apple is (or isn't) handling it, I'm going to give Window Phone Mango a try ...

Apple is not even going to acknowledge the static issue, please trust me.

Go buy the Samsung, you will LOVE it although the OS learning curve will suck.

A friend of mine just bought iPhone4s, checked with him, and voila....

    The static is there.

Reminded me to conversation I had with Apple Store. She said that not all iPhone 4s are affected, but in fact the affected ones are in really really huge number !

It is just like iceberg, only fewer are seen and complained, but indeed much more having this problem.

    Probably they just  :

    1. Don't care for it yet

    2. Don't realize yet, for example connected with WiFI all the time, never making calls in quiet surrounding.

But Apple, this might change soon !

I hope Apple won't let us down by simply asking us to use it with the "right" way - connect to WiFI and it solves your problem.

wow it's almost to a point i just want to get rid of this phone and be done with Apple.

i took mine to the Apple Store, the "genius" went in the back 3 times and couldn't hear it. to be fair, i couldn't hear it at the store either but i'm not going to drive 30 minutes if i'm not having an issue with the phone.

in Altamonte Springs, FL i was getting 5 bars, i think this may be part off the issue. on 5 bars i couldn't hear it. at home here in Sanford,FL and at my office i get 2-3 bars and i hear it constantly. it's definitely a hardware issue.

the Apple store wouldn't replace it for me, which is nonsense. i understand they couldn't hear the static but it's there, they should've tried to make the customer happy and just replace it for me. the "genius" thought it must be a network or sim card issue and told me to go to the AT&T store.

i'll give AT&T and a new sim card a shot (though others here have verified that's not the issue) and then i guess i'll just send it back to Apple directly. since i bought the Applecare + and a new 2 year contract with AT&T i'm guessing i'm pretty much stuck at this point?

i used to be an Apple-hater in the 90s, the company turned around and started making great products. i've spent thousands of dollars on Apple/Mac stuff, if they **** me off now they lose me as a customer.

Hello, I live in Switzerland and got my first iPhone 4s, 16gb, black, almost a month ago. Got problems since day 1. They've already changed my iPhone 3 times at the apple store (for refurbished ones) and problems all the times. This has become a nightmare. I have now called the customer support here and said how unhappy I was and that a phone should at least have its main function(making calls) working correctly. I also said that it was unacceptable that on 4 iPhones all had problems and was wondering if they were making any quality control on their products. I also asked what were those "refurbished" phones exactly. Were they bad phones returned and supposed to be repared? The guy told me that those phones were brand new but were made from pieces from iPhones having troubles in the production.... So I told him that it would probably higher the chance to get a bad phone when accepting one of those refurbished ones. He didn't comment of course. But after seeing how unhappy I was and after I asked him to find me a definitive solution he proposed to changed my phone for a brand new one this time. I really hope this time I won't have any problems. I'm just sick of this right now. I've lost around 8 hours of my life struggling with this phone between the trips to the apple store, the restores, the time I lost putting all over again my contacts and music etc and calling apple. This is just too much. I've never been so disappointed by a product. I used to have an iPhone 3G and was really happy with it. Too bad Apple became so bad. I really hope they will make things better in a near future. I hope they realize they are loosing their customer's trust by acting like that. Good luck everyone for getting a good iPhone.

    For what it's worth, I just brought my phone back to apple and got a replacement. While I haven't tested it yet to see if the crackling is gone, the girl at apple brought up a very good point;

    - If people with this issue don't bring their phones into apple, they won't know (or care) about this problem. Regardless of how many pages and topics there are on this issue.

So I urge you, if you're having this issue please bring your phone back to apple to have it replaced. If the problem persists, keep bringing your phone back!!!

Now to figure out why my data usage has skyrocketed even with all location services and notifications turned off. If these issues aren't resolved I WILL be switching to the Samsung Galaxy sII and I will be advising all of my friends to do the same. Social media is a VERY powerful thing. Power to the people! ;)

The closest apple store to me is 1 hour away, I really don't have the time to go there for nothing, I will wait and see what will happen with other ppl who have the same issue of mine .

Will I beleive alot of people have no apple store around them or they don't want to go there and replace thier iPhones with other phones that have the same issue or with refurbished phones.

BTW I bought 3 iPhones 4S 64gb unlocked and guess what all of them have the static sound.

    Thanks

I forgot to mention that Apple tried to blame my sim card so I also lost time going to a Orange(operator) center to have a new sim card. Of course as you can imagine it hasn't changed anything as the problem comes from the iPhone. The worse in the story is that I haven't only got static noise on my iPhones but also have that recurrent problem when using the headphones to make a call. The sound gets bad and louder at some point of the conversation on my side and the person on the other side hears herself/himself with an echo. With the 1st iPhone I also had network troubles like no network when I usually have had 5 bars at home with my iPhone 3G. On the last one I got troubles with Siri... but as its in beta I don't mind. It's just all those things together that are too much and really unacceptable. I must say that I'm also disappointed to see that apple people are unable to apologize for the inconveniences they caused me.

I also wanted to ask something hoping someone will be able to answer this. The other day I was with a friend and we were comparing our phones. He has a Sony Xperia. We were comparing the compass app. And his compass was affected by my iPhone. Does it mean there is some magnetic flux in the iPhone and that it could be the reason of the static/ interference noise in the phone? Let me know what do you think please.

Any device has an antenna should have magnatic flux ( magmatic field) for example cellphones , gps devices etc.. But the question whether this causes the interference or not , Apple ginueses should answer it , am I right Apple.

Thanks for the reply Ana1cool. I unfortunately don't plan to go to an apple store to talk to an apple genius as I'm tired of going there for nothing. The replacement I will have now is by mail. They will come to pick up my phone and then send me a new one. You should try to call apple support to see if they can arrange something like that in your country, specially if you have 3 iPhones with the problem. As someone said before if people don't inform apple about the issue they will not fix it and I suppose the more complaints they get the faster they will try to fix it.
