Just did a test listening to the back of the device while performing a data speed test (with Wi-Fi off).

I found that I can only hear the noise when the modem is downloading data, and hear nothing when it is uploading data.

    Can anyone repeat this?

I notified to LA Times Business section. I emailed them.. all of us must do our part.

Apple needs to replace our phones or give us full refund regardless of the policy.

Anyone knows when is the next update?

Hi ! I'm living near Lausanne. Yes I was in the Apple Store from Rive and they told me they didn't know the problem and I shouldn't belive on what's read on the internet (I told him about this topic !).

I've sent an email to "iphonemag.ch/" and "macgeneration.com" that describe our problem !

that's lame for the Apple guy to generalize that everything on the internet  is untrue. He had better stop surfing entirely. Anyway, this is a community of people who have iphones that have static and asking apple to solve our problems but to no avail. We are sharing our experiences as a community to help each other and to get Apple to help us.

I hear the static when I was using the iphone tge way any normal person would use the phone. I have a data plan that is constantly turned on. So with 3G on, I'll hear static at the apple logo when calling someone or turning Siri on. I did not even try making the phone download or upload huge volumes of data to simulate the static. So normal daily usage will recreate this static easily.

Unfortunately I have the same digital crackling sound when doing phone calls... :-/

    • I tried it with bumper on and with bumper off but nothing did change...
    • if I turn off mobile data (Settings > Mobile Network) the noise is gone

It seems to be a bug connected to the usage of the 3G Module.

I haven't found a way to turn 3G off in order to test with 2G (maybe a bug in iOS5?).

I will contact apple support on this issue when I have time to talk to someone as I am beyond the 30 day time frame to return the phone because I purchased it launch day. The static is light and from the ear peice only on my phone. There have been a few calls that I have not noticed it on but they are far and few in between. I do not hear any noise emitting from anywhere near or around the Apple logo As some have experienced. My entire phone is enclosed in a hard otter box type case and that has not made any difference. I have tried placing my fingers over the top of the phone during a phone call as someone else suggested and he static is still there. I have turned off cellular data and guess what the static is STILL THERE. I was reluctant to swap the phone out because it is my thought that they all have static and I may trade my phone with a minimum amount of static for one with an excessive amount of static, besides I don't want to trade my brand new phone in for a refurbished device. I don't think apple will do anything about the static after all they did nothing about the antenna problem on the 4th generation phone except to hand out free bumpers which apparently solved the problem. On the other hand they may offer some solution, I just wish it would come soon because it's becoming annoying to hold conversations on the phone. Oh and out of curiosity is anyone's overall speakers volume low? mine is low on both the speaker phone usage and ear peice usage of the device. Heck it's even low during music playback and ringing. Maybe I am just use to the hearty speakerphone of my HTC Tilt 2 which had one of the best speaker phones in the market. The battery life still ***** on this phone probably because it's always connected to some sort of Internet connection be it wifi or 3G. I found that it will last longer if I turn of data access however I lose all my neat features :-( too bad I can't have the best of both worlds. If this is the quality of apple devices from now on I will seriously have to rethink before I purchase another iPhone.

i really hope that apple will keep up the good work and resolve the static issues. i may be complaining about the static a lot but i think it is because i hope that apple products will one to be number 1! this includes the laptops. i just ordered a macbook pro last week and i'm expecting it to be excellent. i have tolerated the older laptop screens that have very bad uniformity but with the newer panels that apples are using now, i believe it will be great!

    Quick question for everyone:

Who is using an unlimited data plan with their 4s? Just curious to see how many have unlimited and the static issue.

I have a US AT&T unlimited data plan (grandfathered in). Can not imagine that would have anything to do with it, though.

I've emailed some mentioned links in this forum. More people write to those tech news surely attract more attention. I hope this will force Apple to fix this issue, if they can't fix it now, then fix it on next production batch. And all affected users should get free replacement when fix is available.

I am using unlimited data plan, and rely heavily on it on my daily activities. Using heavily phone, iCloud, email, and voip application such as Skype. The static problem really annoys me. Considering to switch to Android, but i'm still evaluating it. I upgraded to iPhone 4s from iPhone 4 in expectation to get better call quality (no more death grip), faster connection, and of course siri. But alas... my iPhone 4 is far far better than this **** iPhone4s. I really regret it.

I've called Apple Store again today, just in case I can use Apple care to replace my device again and again until finally get error free one. But alas, the guy just said, uhm, yes, your problem seems strange, the phone should work out of the box, we just know this problem. They are inconsistent, some admitted it, some just said crap.

I also read BG news  that they could not really reproduce this problem on 2 of their iPhone4s ?

Are we just very unlucky user ? is there really error free iPhone 4s ? anyone can confirm this please ? is there really any ?? ever ?

I think Apple affraid of second antennagate. My 1st iP4S I bought in UK, send in Switzerland. Of course, static noise was on both of them. Then I made some calls to UK support, polish support... Ehh, " ...you are the first person with this problem ..." Weak battery, simcard problem, yellow screen, problem with vibration. Too much for this price.
