Unfortunately this is an hardware issue, some component is making noise when the device dowloads or uploads data, via 3g or via wifi.

I think Apple cannot solve it with a bumper or software update...

IMHO, the only patch to iOS 5 that could solve the problem, should be to disable 3g/wifi data when the device is making a phone call

reset network setting, see if all networks are doing this. Or accepted it's a cell phone and move on with your life.

before accepting a problem, I would try to find a solution...

If nothing can be done to solve the static, I'll keep it.

But, why should I buy again an Apple phone after this one?

That doesn't help. Neither does getting a new phone from Apple with the network settings fresh.

And I don't think you understand. Dropped calls because of AT&T were a hassle, but this is worse. Entireley different and incredibly annoying.

I'm guessing you haven't experienced it. Because if you had, you'd be here just as upset as the rest of us. This is unacceptable. There's something wrong with the hardware and Apple needs to acknowledge it. I'm guessing if they do, they'll go about it like the MagSafe and 1st Gen iPod Nano. Years later, they'll say something was wrong and offer some kind of replacement plan. Free overpriced cheap plastic bumpers won't solve this one.

you can reset the network setting on of two was...

Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings

If that doesn't work restore the phoen the carrier has changed something.

    Hope this helps,

This makes 2 iterations of the iPhone in a row with serious network/antenna issues. If they don't make things right with the 4S, I will be moving to Android or WP7. I see no reason to stay with Apple when they keep *****ng customers over like this.

I've done that. Tried and tried again. I'm on my 3rd iPhone 4S in 3 months. It's hardware, it has to be. I've seen people from all 3 carriers experience this. Restoring the phone's firmware does nothing as well. It's something to do with the new antenna or something. I read that they need another piece inside that will difuse the antenna woes and stop the buzzing.

It happens when using 3G: Data or phone call.

I have also tried getting a new SIM card from AT&T and I had them reprovision my network. It's the frigging phone that is the problem.

are all cell phones doing that in that location? What do you have installed on the phone? Try seting up as new.

VeganSlaughter, in 52 pages is written that in any place, any carrier, any configuration, our iphone 4s is affected by static noise. None of the "genius-bar" solution solves the problem

I've mentioned before that I've given up with this problem. However few days ago I just had time to go to Apple store again to replace my iPhone. I mentioned to them, that I want a perfect phone without static error. They said that I can replace the phone again and again until I get error free phone. Quite good service actually, never had this good experience with Apple Store before. They might have replaced me with refurbrised phone, but this time I don't care as long as it works without problem.

Then they replaced it again. Yes, the static problem is still there. This is the 5th iPhone 4s I have known with static problem. But the static noise itself is not as bad as any iPhone 4s i've ever used. I feel quite bit lucky with this and decided will live with the problem until there is another 100% static error free available. So I am going to check this forum at least once a week to see if any progress on this problem.

Still waiting before switching to Android.

I Have the same problem. iPhone 4S, from Portugal, bought in December.

Hope Apple solves this by a massive recall, but unfortunately I seriously doubt that will happen...

I've set up every phone I have as new. Nothing helps. What part of 'hardware defect' don't you understand?

If it had anything to do with 3G/WiFi/data I wouldn't be getting pin drop pristine calls when using Skype or Facetime (over 3G or WiFi).  This (IMO, of course) is a software bug, very likely something to do with noise cancellation because putting the iPhone into speakerphone mode often fixes the static or echo problems as well as the recently publicized in the tech press (Gigaom wrote about it yesterday) no sound on one or the other side of a phone call.  I have intermitently experienced all three symptoms and would suggest that they are all due to the same bug.

I really hope you are right about the software issue. But yesterday I made other tests. Started some SpeedTest sessions over 3G or wifi, no phone calls ongoing: just that app running. Put my ear on the back of the phone... Intense static noise!!
