Jan 5, 2012 6:03 AM in response to - fabius -by Ted Todorov,Did exactly what you just did, tried SpeedTest over both WiFi and 3G, nothing but silence. It is entirely possible you have a problem that I don't (and vice versa):
When I say static, here is what I mean -- I make a call and as the phone at the other end is ringing I start hearing a hiss, which continues when the other person picks up and into the conversation. Sometimes the hiss starts during the conversation itself -- this is with full bars -- not a question of bad cell reception. Never happened to me on the 3GS. Note: the problem is *intermitent*
Echo: well into a conversation I start hearing my voice echoing back to me. Usually while using the standard Apple earbuds -- although that may be because I usually put them on for longer calls. Never happened to me on the 3GS. Note: the problem is *intermitent*
Also as soon as I switched to the 4S a got complaints from friends I was calling that I "didn't sound like myself", or sounded muddy.
See the endless "Ouitgoing call no audio" thread on this forum for the final symptom, again the problem is *intermitent*
Lastly about the static: I did a side by side recording using Apple's Voice Memo app on my 4S and 3GS phones. Way greater dynamic range and clearer recording on the 4S plus audible hiss. No hiss on the 3GS but lower quality recording. It seems like the 4S has a much more sensitive mic, but the noise cancelation software hasn't kept up. IMO, YMMV, etc.

Jan 23, 2012 8:38 PM in response to JamiDianneby Richard Holler,I have the Iphone 4 and it's developed the same exact problem and it's as if the Mic cuts off and leaves static in it's place! People I call can't hear me, and the phone just makes noises! It's pretty lame if you ask me. I am doing a software reset and hopefully that will take care of the problem but I am not holding my breath!

Jan 6, 2012 3:59 PM in response to Richard Hollerby sirifanboy,Here is my experience today. Went to the Apple store nearby. Spoke to a lead over the phone. The genius leads ( 2 of them) couldn't reproduce the static problem inside the store, their own room inside, outside of the store (but inside a very busy mall). I believe they are told by Apple to deny this problem. The first lead promised me the "new" iPhone last time - if I had the problem again. When I pressed for that - the first lead handed me over to the second lead saying he has to go for a meeting. When I asked the second lead to come out in the parking lot (quieter than the mall) he refused. He said he can't give me a new phone - as it is against the manufacturer warranty. He gave a re-manufactured phone (C38, Oct 2011 built). Set the phone as a new one (not restored from the iCloud). I came out from the store and made a call from the car in the parking lot. The first call I heard had lots of static. The second call - "Call Failed".
I am really frustrated. It's pretty tuff going against a big company like Apple - if no newspaper/tv channel covers this story. The second lead told me that Apple doesn't moderate these forums - so nodbody cares about the comments here.

Jan 6, 2012 5:24 PM in response to sirifanboyby mechie8682,This is really unfortunate. Incidentally, I have a C38 on AT&T and its really quiet. My original handset that I received on launch day had static but not terrible one. I decided to swap it out and that's when I was given the C38. I don't care whether it was brand new or refurb. Both are new from cosmetic standpoint anyways. I heard somewhere that the refurb ones actually go thru another set of QC and hence are less prone to having issues.
Not sure what to tell you other than saying it ***** when there is static on the calls. And it's rather sad that the contract manufacturers are not able to do justice to the design Apple has put forth.

Jan 9, 2012 3:25 PM in response to JamiDianneby Matthijst,iOS 5.1 beta 3 returns the 3G switch!

Jan 9, 2012 4:17 PM in response to Matthijstby b0gdan,What do you mean problem solved? Solved like we have to disable 3G to have no static or it just doesn't make the noise regardless?
-
Jan 9, 2012 9:27 PM in response to JamiDianneby lada0513,Can anyone confirmed if iOS 5.1 beta 3 solved the problem. I fixed the problem by returning my iphone 4s 3 days ago and reconnecting my old 3GS. No Static At ALL!!!!
-
Jan 9, 2012 9:28 PM in response to b0gdanby Matthijst,Ah, sorry: you need to disable 3G.
So not really a solution for most, but as I hardly use 3G I'm happy to have the optio to turn it off and enjoy static free calls (it was midnight when I posted the first comment, so only made a bunch of calls to voicemail to test, will
be able to test more today).

Jan 9, 2012 9:44 PM in response to lada0513by Matthijst,Now I only hear a slight noise you sometimes hear when using a cell phone. Tried my old 3GS and I think it's similar on that one. The annoying static crackle seems gone when I turn 3G off.
Will test using the headphones to make a call later on: used to have the echo issue on that.

Jan 10, 2012 4:24 AM in response to Matthijstby dxironman13,Why would you waste our time with this crap? This is a legitimate issue affecting alot of people and you say "turn off 3g, problem solved"? No, problem far from solved. We dont want to switch 3g on and off, we wants phones that dont have static interference....
-
Jan 10, 2012 4:29 AM in response to dxironman13by Matthijst,Chill the **** out.
I'm happy with this solution, cause I don't need 3G.
It's hardware, so the only wat Apple will EVER solve this is if they disable 3G the second you start to make a call, which I don't see them doing anytime soon.
Get used to it or return you phone.

Jan 10, 2012 9:15 AM in response to JamiDianneby Sunfinder,I had the same static noise in my iPhone 4S, got already mz replacement and the new one has got it too.... nothing helps, any settings, backups, other sim cards, it is almost always there and very annoying... I'm thinking right now what to do next, try to replace it once again, give up or maybe ask t-mobile to give me some android instead (got a new contract with the iphone) ...
this is really hopeless, why does apple do nothing about it??
-
Jan 10, 2012 9:29 AM in response to Matthijstby tundres,I agree with dxironman13...if you like a smartphone without 3g fine but respect the people who don't. I did return my crappy iPhone but some people can't and "HAVE TO" get used to it.
That's a legitimate Issue and should be resolved. If it's a hardware issue, the phone should be replaced for a new one without the issue.
-
Jan 10, 2012 9:37 AM in response to tundresby Matthijst,I'm not saying it's not a legitimate issue: it bothered the **** out of me.
I just think dxironman13 is an *** for saying I should stay away "with this crap".
I go out of my way to upgrade to 5.1b3, run some test and post the results here. I have posted multiple times before, checkin the static sound after each beta version even made a recording of it so people could use that to complain to Apple...
He couldv'e just said: "thanks for telling us that the toggle is back and the static is gone if you prefer to not use 3G, but I want my phone to be 100% static free."
I don't think Apple can solve this, otherwise they would've already done so.
But that's just my humble opinion
