Mar 2, 2012 8:42 AM in response to JamiDianneby nairpic20,I have the same problem with my 4S. It's very annoying. I discovered something interesting: when I'm home and my phone is connected to my home wlan the sound disappear...I think is something related to antenna...do some tests on your own and let me know I'm curious

Mar 2, 2012 10:48 AM in response to nairpic20by lu'k,I confirm. The static noises only come when the phone is connected to a 3G Network.

Mar 7, 2012 3:42 PM in response to JamiDianneby mbarcenas,Upgraded to iOS 5.1, still having the same problem, guess we are going to have to learn to live with the noise.

Mar 7, 2012 3:53 PM in response to mbarcenasby CoryAM,Is, was, always will be a problem with the 3G antennae hardware. Software will not fix this issue. I am interested to see how this new patch affects battery life, however. I traded my phone back for the 4, but my girlfriend has the 4S and updated to 5.1 today. I'll write back and let people know if it got any better.
After some time in dealing with these issues, my thoughts are that the drain in battery life is somehow connected to the static noise eminating from the 3G antennae. My reasoning for this is that my girlfriend dropped her phone a few months back and when she did, both the static noise and battery issues were exacerbated by a large degree. I can only assume that they go hand in hand and that these are not separate issues, caused by the same accident.

Mar 8, 2012 12:03 AM in response to JamiDianneby phunkey,Don't wanna jinx it but 5.1 seems to have fixed it for me, made a couple of static free calls in a quiet environment. Gotta say, though, 3G was disabled. While using EDGE the phone call quality is good.

Mar 8, 2012 1:40 AM in response to phunkeyby nairpic20,When you have 3g disabled static disappear, when you are connected to wifi static noises are gone(because when you are connected to wifi network 3g data are disabled) so now I am sure that the problems come from the antenna. 4S has a third antenna on top of the phone and I think , that somehow, is affecting the speaker. How can we make apple to understand that this is a big problem, at least for me?

Mar 8, 2012 4:17 AM in response to nairpic20by dxironman13,Ya the update did nothing. I've waited several long months for this update and it was a bust...I always assumed it was hardware though. I have apple sending a replacement, hopefully they've fixed this issue this far into the production.
Disabling 3G is not a fix though, it's a compromise. It's a hardware issue that Apple has to deal with or they're going to lose customers.

Mar 8, 2012 6:03 AM in response to dxironman13by phunkey,Agreed, definitely not a fix, but certainly better for me, because I have developed the habit ever since my iphone 3g to turn of 3G in order to get better battery life.
I was also thinking of a replacement, but reading through this thread.. replacing the iphone doesn't solve the issue and it would be really hard for me to replace since the phone was bough in the US, but I am using it in Europe. Can you please provide some feedback when you do replace it? Curious if they changed something under the hood.

So you are getting static when making a Skype call over 3G?!? Same antenna! I sure don't -- Skype and Facetime are consistently pristine.
For what its worth, the iOS 5.1 update *so far* seems to have improved voice quality and echo and/or audio going mute at one end of the conversion -- the other two bugs, appear to be gone. Earbuds still sounded bad, but I'll have to recheck with a new pair. Of course more use is needed to confirm with any certainty. No, I am not dissabling 3G. I've said it before and I'll say it agian: the bug was/is was the noise cancelling software on the 4S.

Mar 8, 2012 6:29 AM in response to Ted Todorovby - fabius -,I was really plagued by the static noise. With iOS 5.1, so far, I made two calls over 3G: no hearable static noise.
We'll see...

Mar 8, 2012 6:36 AM in response to - fabius -by dxironman13,it's just coincidence. the static issue is more or less depending on where i am. here at work it's awful and just as bad after the update.

Mar 9, 2012 6:08 AM in response to JamiDianneby crimedog73,I haven't updated to 5.1 yet. I've read that on 5.1 with AT&T that you still cannot disable 3G. Apparently, that feature was left out for AT&T phones, specifically. Can anyone confirm this?

Mar 9, 2012 6:14 AM in response to crimedog73by dxironman13,no i have AT&T and you have the option now to turn off cellular data...that is NOT a solution though, your phone should not buzz when using 3G
