Don't worry.. I'm not holding my breath. I would of just swapped phones but than you run the risk of getting one with a bad battery, a bad screen, rattling noise, microphone issues, static issues but thats a given, and the list goes on..

    Already backing up my iPhone.

Might just give wiping it and setting up as a new iPhone a try and see if it works...

If it doesn't I can just restore the old backup.

Maybe you're right. But what I know for sure is my phone had static from the first time I used it. A hard reset does sound pretty armature coming from the apple store but for the last 24hrs I have been static free. So he did something right.

    OK, just to be sure.

    What did you do?

    - wipe everything from the phone (from within the settings menu)

    - set up as new phone

    - restore contacts from iCloud?

Or havent you restored your contacts yet?

I notice the same thing - when I am on a call it sounds like there is static on the line -  lets hope Apple is on it.

I have some news. I have recorded the sound and plan to send it directly to a contact at Apple. I took my USB headset and pointed the mic  my current iPhone 4S  which was laying flat on its face on my desk. I turned the sensetivity of the mic all the way up in system setting on my G5 tower and had Soundtrack pro ready to record. Then I called a friend and started recording the audio eminating from the back of the phone by the Apple symbol.

After a minute of recording, I played it back and I heard the exact sound we all have been talking about. A very crisp ticking, random in frequency and increases from time to time. Sounding almost like a harddrive.

It only happens when doing Data or call over 3G. The sound can only be heard if the handset is up to your ear. Which is quite annoying when I am on a call.

There is no denying this time. There is something poping, ticking, rattling or whatever in my phone. I'm going to send my findings to apple first, but at some point I may post it online for all to hear.

I just restored it as a new phone.

Still static, so didn't help for me.

    Now restoring all my settings...

It was worth a try though.

Can you upload that recording somewhere? Maybe other people can use it.

Or is there actual conversation audible?

You could also dial vociemail, usually the spoken menu times out after a while and you're left with silence (and static).

Mine as well, but I don't have a data subscription, so I only use it on wi-fi.

Mine too. There is only on 3G. When I'm on E I don't see any rattle. Apple, come on !!! FIX IT. BTW. Tested on Orange and T-mobile.

I am on my 3rd phone, i keep having the same issue.

I have tried a hard reset with all 3 phones and the issue is still present.

I have noticed that when recording a video, I get the same stattic noise.  The noise is very faint, but present.

Also cant be sure, but it almost feels like there is something loose in the phone, maybe its just mine.

I will keep asking Apple to change the handset, until my problem is solved.

    At 849$ + Tax, I will not accept a phone, that I can't use as a phone.

I can't beleive that we are just a handfull of people that are having this issue. Specially after 3 phones.  I beleive most people have the issue, but just haven't noticed it yet.  Its a question of time before it gets to the mass media, then Apple won't have a choice, but to solve the issue.
