iOS5 Mail crashing

Since installing iOS5 on my first-gen iPad, and also on iOS5 on my newly delivered iPhone 4S, I have had the Mail app crash on a regular basis for me. The first several times it crashed shortly after loading, so no harm was done, but this afternoon I started writing a long email response to someone on the iPhone and it crashed back to the home screen in the middle of that and lost all my edits. So I tried composing the same email espouse on the iPad, and then the same thing happened and I lost all my edits a second time. I now realize that, until a patch for Mail comes out, I can no longer rely upon it for any serious email usage, and that is very disappointing.

Is it just my pair of iOS5 devices that are suffering from this, or are others seeing the same thing?

Thanks,

- David

I'm getting the same thing guys on an iPhone 4 with ios5 installed.

Mail often crashes about 2-3 seconds after first loading before it even has time to check my pop account.

On other occasions, I get halfway through typing a huge email and it just randomly crashes, losing my entire message and not saving it into drafts or anything!!! Very frustrating...

Hopefully Apple will release an urgent update for ios 5.00 ASAP...

I have the same problems, even since I upgraded to IOS 5 , both my Wife's and I iPad 2's, my 3GS, and her iPhone 4, all crash at random times while having the app open. Replying to an email is tricky, because you never now if you will get enough time to actually send it off before it crashes. The mail app also crashed most every time between fast app switching as well instantly.

I end up dealing with this about 20 times a day!

Trying to reboot the iDevice, restore the iDevice, deleted the email accounts and put them back, or Apple switching out your iDevice, does not solve the problem at all!

There is a clearly is memory leak within the mail app that was never caught! Apple needs to fix this!

Wonder how long until IOS 5.0.1 comes out?

same problem here, but this is not a issue of iOS 5.0, i had also in the last release of iOS4, and it's really annoying. I think that there is something like the text format of a mail or other things that crash the app as soon

as new messages arrive. But i'm also thinking about some problem with the server, even if i don't have any idea about how this can happen. As soon as my new messages are downloaded, the app crash. And it's a recent bug... What make my think about a server side inducted issue is that i never had a problem with mail and all this mess started like 1 month before iOS5 was released. Never had a single crash in more than two years.

PLUS: the things get solved after you sync with itunes! ***?

Crashing for me as well. iOS5 on an iPhone4. It doesn't happen too often, maybe 5 times since the update to iOS5, but it's annoying nonetheless. It typically happens in the background though. I'll notice that I hadn't gotten any email in a while, so I open the app to find it crashed. After quitting Mail entirely and starting it back up, it works again until the next crash.

After upgrading all of our devices to iOS 5 I am seeing this issue. Our iPad and iPhone have the Mail app crashing issue. However, our iPad 2 was not. After looking at the differences I found that it's appears to crash when accessing a POP3 mailbox. On the iPhone I have my iCloud, Gmail and several POP mailboxes. After disabling the POP accounts I have not had any crashes. The iPad only has a POP3 account so that thing is unusable for mail. I added one of the POP accounts to the iPad 2 and it started crashing as well.

I've tried system resets, reboots and adjusted settings. I also tried the deleteing the mailbox and clearing everything thinking a message was corrupt suggestion. That did not fix anything. We just got a new iPhone in the family. This one is a fresh iOS 5 system (no restores from backup) same thing. Mail will crash. It's only a matter of time and if you can type fast enough to get your mail sent before it does.

This is a bug and needs to be fixed soon.

That makes sense. I added an iCloud account and disabled my IMAP account (but left the POP3 account enabled), and it still crashes, so it seems to be a problem with the POP3 account.

It's so frustrating. I finally convinced my father to buy an iPhone, and now I don't dare tell him about all of the problems I'm having with mine, because I feel bad having talked him into buying something so defective, especially since he's retired and has so little money. I also want my friends to "upgrade" to iOS5 so we can all use iMessage, but I don't dare recommend it to anyone.

I am SO HAPPY that I'm not the only one that this is happening to!

I've also been to the Apple Store a week ago and they gave me a new iPhone 4S replacement. I knew it was a software bug of some sort, not a hardware issue! I painstakingly spent the entire evening last night restoring my new Phone 4S and then did a sync....NOT from my last back-up......and that takes forever as if I was using an iPhone for the first time (I upgraded from a 3G.)

I am in the email program and writing a long message....and then just before I send it, the iPhone quits out of the email program and jumps back to the home screen AND DOES NOT SAVE WHAT I JUST WROTE AS A DRAFT.

Also, before I did the big restore when all this started, the search feature would occasionally come up with no results......but I could reboot the phone and then it would work. Also when using Siri sometimes and asking to please call a certain person, it would find the conact, say it's caling and then it immediately terminates the call. Then I have to go to recent on the phone and call the person manually.

Also, a few times I've made a phone call and the person could not hear me speak but I could hear them.....if we call each other back it works. Could be an AT&T issue on that one.

Again, I love the new phone but it's very frustrating, especially that Apple Care keeps sending me down long roads of trials and tribulations and will not admit that there is a problem....and there apparantly IS.

Let's hope this bug gets fixed quickly. I need to depend on sending email and don't want to waste any more time.....with re-typing a long email or getting nowhere with Apple Care.
