Q: iOS5 Mail crashing

Since installing iOS5 on my first-gen iPad, and also on iOS5 on my newly delivered iPhone 4S, I have had the Mail app crash on a regular basis for me. The first several times it crashed shortly after loading, so no harm was done, but this afternoon I started writing a long email response to someone on the iPhone and it crashed back to the home screen in the middle of that and lost all my edits. So I tried composing the same email espouse on the iPad, and then the same thing happened and I lost all my edits a second time. I now realize that, until a patch for Mail comes out, I can no longer rely upon it for any serious email usage, and that is very disappointing.

Is it just my pair of iOS5 devices that are suffering from this, or are others seeing the same thing?

Thanks,

- David

@Applebonkers - I agree.  I have two different ISP's and I used one at a time and both.  Don't think it makes a difference.  Again, I ask, has anyone heard anything from Apple on this issue?????????

1st gen iPad behaving the same way. Crashes on a reply, no draft saved. I ended typing the same long email 4 times. Very frustrating

My email crashes when I reply to certain email addresses. If I reply, type text, then hit send, the mail app minimizes and my email is lost. However, I can use the Forward option rather than Reply, type the email, hit send, and away it goes. So there is something very odd with the reply option. I haven't tried hitting Reply, deleting the auto filled addressee, and manually typing in the address to see if that works. May try it. If that works, there would be something wrong with how IOS5 populates the addressee when hitting Reply.

@Ken, exactly the same behavior I am seeing. Replying to one email address, that is in my contacts and hit send and bam it's gone, no draft saved. Other times I can send to that address okay. Other addresses have not had this problem, but the email I have problems with is the one I reply to most in the day.

It sounds like most of us are on IOS 5.01. Interesting this thread started around the time that many of us applied the 5.01 update. I did not have this problem with the initial release 5.0

I am having the same problem sometime after I upgraded to iOS 5.01

I am using several email accounts (gmail, Lotus Notes Traveller, Pop3, iCloud)

I have made most of the "parhaps-reparative" actions mentioned in this thread with no success so far.

The behaviour is not systematic, sometimes it stays stable for several days, then it restart crashing most of times.

Will Android be the only definitive fix?

Are you sure it's not just crashing to emails sent from android devices? That's the problem I'm having.

Same here. Noticed I could reply to any email except one sent from android user on Galaxy SII.

That is true in my case as well, the person I m replying recently got an android tablet. Still, the problem seems to be on the IOs email client side, because I downloaded the app iMailg and I am able to reply without any problems. I also noted that when I look in my inbox, the name of the sender, is not getting resolved with the corresponding name in my Contacts. So instead of seeing John Smith, I am seeing jsmith, where the users email is jsmith@rogers.com. This in spite of the fact that the email address has not changed.

Absolutely not the case with my situation.  Neither sending nor receiving anything related to the Android platform can be causing my email to crash. I have completely emptied my accounts including deleted boxes and it has still crashed.  All I can say is that it is incredibly annoying.

I figured out a couple of things:

1.The problem (at least for me), is exclsuively confined to emails received from Android users who USED THE DEFAULT MAIL program . When I had users send me an email from a different Android Mail App (i.e. GMAIL APP), I was able to reply to them with no problems. Therefore, the problem seems to be in the way Apple Mail is encoding emails received from the default Android Mail App.

    2. A [tedious] workaround is to delete all parts of the sender's message before replying. If you do that, then Apple Mail will not crash on your iPhone and you should be able to reply without any problems.

So I have found the issue for the majority of US, tell your people that are using android devices to turn off their email signitures, this is the issue. I have tested on ios 5 multipule devices and any time an email comes from an new android device from a exchange account and I try to reply it closes the mail app on my ios device. If I remove their email siginiture from the android device then it sends just fine no issues what so ever hope this helps

TELL PERSON SENDING YOU EMAILS TO REMOVE THEIR EMAIL SIGINITURE!!

Yahtzee!! That's it! Just confirmed on the Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket. Told her to remove the sig and send me an email. Replying back did not crash the app. Now the next test: if she puts her own sig (not the default) will it crash? We'll have to test that out. Thank you!

Yes it will still crash with a custom sig, I tried that as well, only thing I've found is to have them remove the send sig in android

Same issue here.  Running a iPhone 4 with iOS 5.0.1 and when typing emails the mail app suddenly crashes and I loose 100% of my email.  This is extremely frustrating.  I have tried all the resets but nothing works. What is going on here.   It makes me want to look at an Android operating system phone...
