Q: iOS5 Mail crashing

Yup mine does this ALL the time.

Was fine for a year before I upgraded to iOS 5 and now it crashes at least 3 or 4 times per day.

It mostly crashes while I'm not even using it. Only way out is to kill the Mail app and it usually restarts on its own.

It's massively frustrating!!!!!!

I have iCloud, IMAP and Exchange accounts running on it and have never figured out what's causing it, but it's def since I installed iOS 5.

Please please please sort it out Apple...cos it's making a Blackberry look like a very nice upgrade right now since I rely on email so much.

I had the same problem on my iPad and iPhone! I have narrowed down the issue to the fact that the mail app crashes when replying to an email sent from someone using a Samsung mobile device!

I simply deleted their signature before sending my reply, and it was all ok!!

THIS WORKS!!  I noticed that it happened today with two co-workers with Samsung signatures.  I delete their signature and it sends my mail fine instead of just going back to the home screen when I hit send!  Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Mine has never done this until today when for the first time ever I replied to an email inside my gmail account and when I clicked send, mail crashed. I have submitted the crash log to Apple. Hope they fix this soon.

That's very interesting. The very mail I am replying to was sent to me by a friend who uses a Galaxy S2. Unfortunately in his case there is no signature in his message but quite possible that there's an encoding issue of sorts with mail sent from the Galaxy.

If I delete all contents of the email and then add my reply the message sends perfectly.

I am seeing the same thing at our company. We have about 15 iphones and all users tell me that they are frustrated with the mail app crashing all the time. Seems to happen when the app checks for new mail. The problem is more of an issue when the user is trying to type out long emails, then the app checks for mail and it crashes, closing the app and loosing the email.

Since this a core feature of the iphone and it is used constantly by our users, this is really a problem for us. All of our accounts are pop accounts which are synced through Outlook, so I dont know if its different with an IMAP setup or Exchange, but half the users are ready to abandon the phone and go to something else.

Im trying to find out if iOS 5.1 will be the fix and maybe I can tell them to hold on just a bit more and it will be fixed, but all I see is stuff about delete individual photos from photostream.

There are 13 pages on this forum about this issue, Im surprised it isnt even mentioned in the feature list of the new update. We played along, the whole company, we all wanted elegance and simplicity and something stable. Something that just worked. We dont pay higher prices for the fun of it. We pay because we expect the core stuff to work flawlessly. I understand issues like this and when they are addressed right away, I am forgiving, but there has already been 1 update to iOS and no fix. We are prepping for the iOS 5.1 update and if there isnt a fix in there, I can safely say that we are bowing out of the iOS environment. There might be a few die-hards that will stay, but they will be officially on their own with no company support of their devices. I cant waste time with stuff that acts up and kills productivity.

Ok so I finally broke down and reloaded the phone.....restored as new phone. Before you restore...if you need your notes copy and paste them to an email first and email yourself or they will be wiped...then be sure you get your photos into Iphoto or somewhere safe. Your music should be the easiest to restore in the end but it takes the longest... Once the restore and reload is done, you will have to redo many of the settings you probably customized. Here's the thing if you restore from a backup you will bring whatever corruption that causes this back so the only way is a maunal rebuild. If you have any app data/documents you will want to do what you can to put that somewhere...I carry manuals in GoodReader(great app) so I saved those out in Itunes too(pushed them back later with GoodReader's wifi feature...Card Star had to be redone manually, its back up didn't seem to work when I reloaded it. After the restore I turned all cloud services off,  reloaded manually apps(got to clean that mess up, resynced contacts...be sure to add a dummy contact to your phone first or your contacts will dissappear from your computer(nice gotcha there apple) when you sync. You will need to re-enter all of your mail server data, I think this is the actual fix.Then I dumped back in the pictures from sync via Itunes. Once all was set I turned back on the cloud services I use.  Due to earlier mischief, I don't sync contacts. I do recommend that you clean your contacts, put first last and company names in their place, as this caused some issues early on, and may be related to the battery problem due to cloud syncing issues.

It took maybe two hours to do this but I left the mail app open all night, no problem, been emailing all morning...don't know any Galaxy 2 users though so I haven't tested that.

Ive been using an iphonefor about 4 year, and there are to peculiarities ive noticed with the mail app which i think might be the cause of the crashes. I update my iphone every year, but havent et it up as new in about 3 years. So while there may be a possibility that theres something corrupted in my backup, i think this is something apple can and should fix, rather than me having to jump through hopps like loosing 3-4 years of info such as textmessages and intalling apps from scratch.

So i used to have mail app crashes with my 3gs, they stopped with one of the updates on my i4, and all was fine until i enabled icloud on my 4s. The minute i did that the very next instant i started mail it crashed, and ever since then every second to third time i open mail, it will crash the second i open it. Ill see my mailbox for a second,mfollowed by a crash. So i thinkone of the causes ofthis is definitely icloud, since i could directly see the correlation with enabling it. I know my 4s on ios5 wasnt crashing for a few weeks, then i enable icloud and it start. I havent disabled icloud to test.

Mail has crashed for me twice when writing long emails, but i think it still has its root in the icloud/checking mail issue. I dont write many emails on my ipad/iphone (but i do check my iphone spp atoeast 50 times a day),  so i cant aay if it crahes only with short emails or long emails, but the twice it crashed was with long emails, and since then ive limited myself to writing very short emails only on my ios devices cos i dontnwant to risk losing a long email.

Oh and i have exactly the same symptoms on my ipad. Enabled icloud and suddenly my mail app starts crashing exhibiting the exact same behaviour a iphone. I dont know if thi is the same issue that everyone ele is having, but theres definitely something apple needs to fix. On my ipad i have only 1 gmil accout set up as exchange, while on my iphone i have 4 account, 2 with pop and 2 exchange.

In some ways Mirzank's comments support what I think is happening.....here's the problem with waiting for Apple, to them its not broken.

some one might try this....make a backup of your phone in Itunes....then write down your server data (did I say write?)delete all of your email acounts, make two(one is a spare) backups of your phone with no email accounts changing the name of your phone and unplugging/replugging it each time before making the next backup. Restore 5.01 from itunes, set up as new phone. Then restore from back up with one the no email backups (faster than what I did above) and add one email account at a time and see what happens....

Other observations into this I have an Ipad that I loaded the contacts and mail settings from my iphone 4s to before i fixed it, ...its mail became unstable.  even with a different account now it still crashes. my work ipad has never seen my iphones data(with the corruption from way back in the 3.12 to 4.1 transition maybe) its mail is rock solid. I reloaded the family Ipad with the above plan, making a backup with no email accounts, and guess what...its mail has been stable so far too.....so anyone want to try and report back?

@knottymars - I feel very similar to what you express.  I don't pay high dollar then expect the product not to work.  Moreover, I don't mind dealing  with "issues" as long as they are addressed in a timely manner.  This started happening the day (literally the hour) after I upgraded to ios5.  You wouldn't be able to convince me it's not ios5.  Apple has not responded and they must be getting millions of crash reports per day!  This f*#$*+g s*#t stinks to high heaven.  I'm just about out too and it ****** me off!

No problem with any email signatures. I tried removing spotlight search. Rebooted. Seemed to work for a little while, but fell back into issues. I also stopped syncing notes (which were replicating by the hundred) and mail with iCloud. Helped the note issue, but not the mail. I then turned off iCloud altogether. This, for me, was the best fix. Appears the issue is with iCloud, and/ or since upgrading to 5.0. Apple really needs to fix this! Been following this thread since iPhone 4s release! you think they would have at least addressed this issue by now.

Now it seems to be that syncing notes with Gmail is causing this replicating bug...anyone else have this occur?

@knottymars  -  I am glad that my iPad email has only been used for personal use. I agree with your assesment.  I have been following this thread for months, and the silence from Apple has been deafening and telling. Its clear to me that this forum is not about Apple supporting its users, its often about desperate users of Apple products trying to help themselves. I've seen no indication that Apple even monitors these threads.

email is a core functionality of the IOS platform, and if you can't rely on it, it erodes confidence in the platform as a whole, especially for corporate use. I don't expect Apple to have immediate fixes, but I do expect Apple to acknowledge this class of problem and let us know when they are going to address them. 

Its frustrating, because up till release 5, this was a superior product. I was a proponent of this platform, but I am no longer.

I too am using my iPad2 primarily for business and these mail crash issues are really becoming a huge issue.

This has only been happening since updating to iOS 5.  I never had a hint of a problem on iOS 4.3.5 -- it was rock solid.  I had hoped that 5.0.1 would fix it, but no such luck.  I have been to the Apple store and they tell me they have never heard about this problem.  They have "restored" and even swapped my device and the problem always reappears.  I have done my own "restores" and every time, I set it up as new.  I have lost important documents in the process because I have not wanted to take a chance on restoring from a backup.

It has gotten to the point that I have trained myself to Save to Draft every couple of sentences.  I have been burned so many times when composing new emails or simply replying.  Typing for more than a minute or two without saving is inviting a crash.  Occasionally I can recover some of my work, but most of the time, I need to start for scratch.

My business email is POP.  Our company does not use an exchange server.  I do not use iCloud -- it has never been activated on any of my devices.  I also have Gmail and Yahoo accounts, but seldom compose messages in either, so I cannot comment on their stability.  My problems are with POP/IMAP.  (I'm not sure what the difference is between POP and IMAP, but I've set up my account both ways and both have the same problem with crashes.)

This problem has been going on for months.  I've been watching this discussion forum grow to the point that it is now on thirteen pages and 23751 people have viewed it.  Google even auto-completed the search term for me!  Apple's silence on the matter is very frustrating.  I am in the market for a new phone, and given my investment in productivity apps, the obvious choice would be to move to an iPhone.  That decision is on hold pending the resolution of this problem with Mail.
