Q: iOS5 Mail crashing

Since installing iOS5 on my first-gen iPad, and also on iOS5 on my newly delivered iPhone 4S, I have had the Mail app crash on a regular basis for me. The first several times it crashed shortly after loading, so no harm was done, but this afternoon I started writing a long email response to someone on the iPhone and it crashed back to the home screen in the middle of that and lost all my edits. So I tried composing the same email espouse on the iPad, and then the same thing happened and I lost all my edits a second time. I now realize that, until a patch for Mail comes out, I can no longer rely upon it for any serious email usage, and that is very disappointing.

Is it just my pair of iOS5 devices that are suffering from this, or are others seeing the same thing?

Thanks,

- David

    Thanks Boerseun!!

I have just tested the Samsung theory and it worked!

A colleague sent me an email with his signature "Sent from Samsung Mobile"

I replied and as son as i pressed "Send" the email app crashed and returned me to the Springboard.

He sent the same email but deleted the words "Sent from Samsung Mobile"
I replied to this email and all was fine - message sent no problem!

We tried again with a combination of the words "Sent from Mobile", "Sent from", "Sent Mobile" etc and it crashed again and again

So, removing the words from the signature fixes the problem - well, it doesnt FIX anything but allows the message to send!

    Apple - response please??

There is no signature theory to my crash problems.  I don't, nor have I ever, communicate with anyone who has a signature with a google or other device.  My crashes started immediately after installing ios5 and no one particular thing causes the crashes or stops them from happening.  I have went through everything mentioned in this thread.  I have a new device(s) and with the install as a new device.  The problem is with ios5.

And, yes I completely agree with the previous poster, APPLE, could you please respond?

I have just had the crash happen to me again when I tried to use the 'Move' button in the Mail app to file an email containing an lightweight image file. The crash occurred in my Google Apps mail account.

    To test this:

    - I forwarded the same message to my iCloud mail account and attempted to 'move' it again - no crash.

    - Using my Google account, I sent a plain text message to my Google and iCloud accounts and attempted to move the email from each respective inbox one at a time; iCloud, no crash; Google, crash.

    - Using my iCloud account, I sent a plain text message to my Google and iCloud accounts and attempted to move the email from each respective inbox one at a time; iCloud, no crash; Google, crash.

    - I downloaded the image from the original email, sent it to my iCloud account (from my Google account) and attempted to move the email from the iCloud inbox; no crash.

    - I also tested shutting down the app between attempts to move messages, with the same outcome; Google = crash, iCloud not.

In my case signatures do not appear to be an issue, neither does length of email or time the app is open.

Is anyone else having crashes only associated with their Google mail accounts?

Add my name to the list too!

Please we need a fix for this.

    It is highly frustrating.

I write my text in notes for goodness sake and then paste them at the mail app!

I also had no problems with my email until the upgrade to iOS5.  Now email is almost unusable - dozens of crashes a day.  I do like the "write my text in notes" solution!

25,000 views of this post and apple doesn't acknowledge that there's a problem?  I will give Apple until 5.1 to fix this (mid-March?), or I will be an ex-customer.  Apple should at least respond to our concerns.

@jtp84: bit of a late reply, butehh, don't you think apple is trying to say something about your fiancee? (or her use of Samsung devices for that matter...)?

    Hi,

Have you also experienced mail "coming back" after crash?

Since the update, I'll check email, delete some, and then "crash" - and the mail is back in the inbox!

Very annoying, and time wasting - wondered if you've experienced it post-crash as well?

Just want to throw this out http://www.itworld.com/it-consumerization/247062/iphone-problems-solved-6-tips-s peed-your-ios-device?page=0,0

After doing several of the things mentioned in the article my phone seems to be running better and haven't seen a crash so far but it's not been very long.

    Reply to David above:

Yes this also happens all the time  and annoys the heck out of me too.  But it's the same problem as the APP crashing, in that it doesn't have time to finish deleting the mail, even though it's momentarily gone on the screen.  When/if Apple fixes the crashing, this problem will be taken care of too (I hope).

    Hello frustrated iPhone owners,

I started encountering this issue out of the blue yesterday.  My issue was only with my gmail account as I could send email from my other accounts.  eg. Hotmail.  The issue I was having with my gmail account was I couldn't send emails.  I could compose the email, but as soon as I touched "Send", my email would crash and bring me back to the home screen.

I corrected the issue by following the steps below:

    - Synced and backed up phone.  (I was on the most current release of i05.  I did this for good measure)

    - Restarted phone

    - Removed gmail account

    - Restart phone

    - Added 'new' gmail account (same account as before) without signature (saw a thread saying it was their signature causing the issue)

    - Restart phone

    - Tested all 3 email accounts and could send without issue from all 3.  (gmail, Hotmail, yahoo)

I've been send emails without issue for the last 30 mins.  I'll update this thread if it starts failing again.

This may or may not work for you.  Just thought I'd throw in my two cents.

    Thanks JB.

I didn't follow your solution exactly, but your comments reminded me that I had a signature set on me Google Apps mail account. I headed over there and deleted that signature plus the iPhone default mail signature, then deleted my Goggle Apps account from the iPhone (entered as an Exchange account), then rebooted the phone.

The main cause of crashes for me was trying to move (or file) mail in my Google inbox - this caused a cars every time. I tested this again after making the above changes and it now works fine. I also added back my iphone mail signature (Settings-->Mail, Contacts, Calendars-->Signature) and still no crashes. I will leave the Google account mail signature off.

I am wondering if part of the problem is having a local iPhone mail signature and a remote email account signature?  I don't know enough about this though, and frankly can't be bothered testing it.

Hopefully other Google account holders will benefit from your advice too.

Does anyone know if IOS 5.1 announced today makes any claims to address these issues with Mail?  The preliminary feature set I've seen does not mention bugs with Mail...

Just upgraded to 5.1 and so far so good.  Funny how Apple doesn't want to admit that there was a problem with email.  I'll keep testing, but hopefully this upgrade has fixed it.

I'm the original poster of this thread, and after installing iOS 5.1 on my iPhone 4S tonight I composed a very long email on it as a test. I never could have successfully completed and sent this email with iOS 5 before, but tonight I was successful, and have experienced no crashes yet. It's far too soon to say for certain, but I am at least hopeful that Apple may have finally fixed this problem.  Keeping my fingers crossed!
