Q: iOS5 Mail crashing

Since installing iOS5 on my first-gen iPad, and also on iOS5 on my newly delivered iPhone 4S, I have had the Mail app crash on a regular basis for me. The first several times it crashed shortly after loading, so no harm was done, but this afternoon I started writing a long email response to someone on the iPhone and it crashed back to the home screen in the middle of that and lost all my edits. So I tried composing the same email espouse on the iPad, and then the same thing happened and I lost all my edits a second time. I now realize that, until a patch for Mail comes out, I can no longer rely upon it for any serious email usage, and that is very disappointing.

Is it just my pair of iOS5 devices that are suffering from this, or are others seeing the same thing?

Thanks,

- David

I'm uncertain that a new SIM would help.

My SIM is less than a year old (new with my iPhone4), but the mail issue has only started happening since I upgraded to iOS5. The fact that others are seeing the exact same problem is indicative that it is a wider issue and probably something to do with the software rather than everyone having a faulty SIM - that would be a little too coincidental.

The fact that doing a restore/deleting and re-adding accounts/removing unused SMTP servers etc seems to temprorarily provide a fix makes it sound even more like there is a bug in the new version of the mail app.

Just a quick note to say "me too" - whenever I leave the email I'm typing, then come back to it later, my typing has gone and all I see is a message saying "loading..." I wait, but nothing loads!

My iPad email crashes on iOS 5. I open email, begin typing, and before I can complete a few sentences the email window closes and I am returned to the home screen. All work is lost.

I purchased the iPad over a year ago primarily for away-from-home email. It has worked flawlessly until now. The iOS 5 update renders the device almost useless to me. I am shocked that Apple has released such an unstable new operating system. I am disappointed that no official acknowledgement of the problem has been offered by the company.

I have completed a bit of research on my iPad's email crashes and posted the results in this topic:

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3460995

If the source of your crashing is the same as mine then my conclusion at the bottom of the topic may offer you a possible workaround until the problem is fixed by Apple.

I have a similar issue: Every now and then (mostly overnight) the Mail hangs and stops receiving emails. Openning it up ends up in a crash and then the second time it works again. It is happening almost on a daily basis.

I'm running iOS 5 on an iPhone 4S.

I have two Exhange accounts with Google Apps with push enabled on both.

The email crashing is a daily part of my iPhone 4S experience.  Top level "support" at Apple has been frustrating at best.  Also since I upgraded to iOS 5, the email program on my iPad 2 is also crashing.  Sometimes just before I send out the email it crashes and does not save the email.  Gone!  Generally the program quits and I have to re-launch it.  Very unpredictable.

Another problem on the iPhone using Siri, is of you the tell it to call a contact, it goes thru the motions and then quits before it connects the call.  I've spoken with friends who are also experiencing the same problem.

I hear there is going to be an iOS 5 update coming in the next several weeks. The big complaints have been no audio or an echo on outgoing calls.

Apple just won't admit the email problem.  They rather have you pull out your hair and make you jump thru troubleshooting hoops.

Clearly there are numerous issues with the new OS, so let's hope that Apple can correct these problems soon!

Same here! I keep hearing the sound notification for a new email but i get no emails! Also the mail app keeps crashing, every few minutes i can see a crash report in the diagnostics tab... After ios5 install i also experienced maasive data usage (having to pay extra for exceeding may data plan), battery problems etc... This is frustrating to say the least! ios5 is full of problems. Please note that i have tried everything to fix this, every possible solution given in the forums but with no results....

    Same here!

Did not have any problems with my mail on iPad gen 1 or iPhone 4 before installing ios5. Now with ios5 it crasches all the time when I'm writing emails.

Why havn't Apple responded to this in their own support forum!!!

I am happy to report that my problem of iOS 5 Mail crashing when replying to a certain email is now completely fixed. Not sure how, but I'm happy about it.

Something is seriously wrong with the iOS 5.0.  I am having the same issues.  I have spent the last 4 hours in the Hong Kong Apple store trying to work on the issue!  I am on a business trip and have spent more time fighting with this issue than work.

    FRUSTRATED and disappointed

(Its my first Apple and Apple Genius experience... not happy at all)

Similar problem here as well, updated 3gs to iOS5 and Exchange email account will not work. It does not verify and unless you delete the account, it forever stays in "checking email" status. Tried everything I can think of plus loads of suggestions on these forums and nothing works.

We need an update from Apple asap on these issues, in my view this is as bad as the Blackberry Servers going down a few weeks ago and the press was all over that, this is the same for Iphone users, we cannot use our email either!!

Anyone from Apple care to comment or update us all on what is happening??

I've run into the same thing on my iPhone 4 since the update.

Usually once a day, I'll see - for example - from the icon that there are "5" messages.

I open the mail client, and either it immediately closes, or sometimes I have clicked "edit", deleted the spam" and then the client crashes, and those "deleted" messages are there again when I reopen it.

    Pretty frustrating.
