Q: iOS5 Mail crashing

Since installing iOS5 on my first-gen iPad, and also on iOS5 on my newly delivered iPhone 4S, I have had the Mail app crash on a regular basis for me. The first several times it crashed shortly after loading, so no harm was done, but this afternoon I started writing a long email response to someone on the iPhone and it crashed back to the home screen in the middle of that and lost all my edits. So I tried composing the same email espouse on the iPad, and then the same thing happened and I lost all my edits a second time. I now realize that, until a patch for Mail comes out, I can no longer rely upon it for any serious email usage, and that is very disappointing.

Is it just my pair of iOS5 devices that are suffering from this, or are others seeing the same thing?

Thanks,

- David

    I fixed mine .

Please note that along with mail app problems i also had battery problems and massive data usage. Now everything is fine (this fix was done prior to the 5.0.1 update) From what i can understand the problem was corrupt data that was causing communication problems between my phone and my mail server. So the first thing i did was empty the deleted items folder on my server because usually the problem is in there....and....that was it!! Everything is working fine now! No more mail app crashes, the battery is back to normal, and also no more massive data usage. I dont know if this fix applies to everyone but i would give it a try....

Got the sam epropblems as teh ones listed above. Just wanted to add myself to teh list of people having this crap. Similar to all of you, a reset doesn't work, and 5.0.1 doesn't do anything either. Guess I'm not going for the next apple product afterall. Looks like Apple decided now that they got people hooked they can now throw quality into teh wind. Steve would turn over in his grave bless him...

    Fixed mine.

I had to do a complete restore of my phone.

When you plug it into itunes click the restore buttion, it will download the files needed, backup your phone, then reload the ios onto the phone.

After I did all that, the email worked fine.

I think there was a few corrupt files that was keeping exchange from running properly.

    Hope this helps

It has been a few days since I've performed the steps of clearing out all the mail accounts and re-added them.  While the mail application has crashed less frequently, the crashes have returned.  So, this cure was short lived, but I will continue to monitor to see if the issue improves.

It's been said that Apple doesn't read the forums, but all the crash reports are hopefully going somewhere so that the issue can be addressed.

GlenL- This problem is happening to me too! It only crashes when I click send, and it's only crashing when I reply to my fiancée who sends her emails from her Samsung Galaxy S2!!

Hi jtp84, I'm not sure what the root cause was, but for some reason, it fixed itself. I am able to reply to her emails now. I'm sorry I can't be of more help. I did NOT change any settings on my phone.

Same here. Happening regularly on iPad1 and iPhone 4. And only since ios5 came along. Very, very, very very annoying and time-wasting, especially when you've written a 400 word email reply. I think I remember this happening before in Mail, somewhere around 1998. There's progress for you.

I followed the advice of a previous poster and emptied all my trash and deleted folders

Not had a problem since the weekend. That's not to say its a fix or excuses Apple from fixing IOS5. Far from it but I would give it a try first before doing anything more involved.

Ok I am getting the same issue on my new iPhone 4s and iPad 2. I have pseudo-solved it by turning off my primary IMAP account (I have two others - iCloud and gmail -POP3?). Which is not optimal! Further, I have noticed that when the account is on and I have deleted a number of mails, it seems to be stable, until the next batch of mail arrives. So I am not sure if it's a specific type of mail (one with an attachment or a html based one), or if it's the fetch process itself? I have on occasions also had one e-mail (from the IMAP account) being constantly downloaded. Odd.

Apple please FIX! This was NOT an issue on my old iPhone 3G nor the iPad2 with 4.3!

I was also seeing sporadic Mail crashes in iOS5 (both the original version and the 5.0.1 update). I completely emptied all the trash folders in all four email accounts on my iPhone 4 this morning and haven't had a crash since. That seems to have done the trick for me ... so far at least.

Mmh, for me deleting trash folders in my 3 accounts (1 Gmail, 1 iCloud, 1 Exchange) didn't fix it.

It didn't seem that the Mail App at all made an attempt to access the remote mail server, so it wouldn't have recognized the emptied trashes anyway.

After consulting Apple Care I've done a complete restore of my 4S, which (good luck) was easy due a a very recent backup.

I've been recreating this problem all morning with my coworker and his Galaxy S2.

If he send me an email through our work exchange server the mail app will crash when clicking "send" on replying to the message.

No problems if he send the email through Gmail on the Galaxy S2. It has to go through our exchange server for it to crash the iphone.

    Very weird.
