Q: iOS5 Mail crashing

Since installing iOS5 on my first-gen iPad, and also on iOS5 on my newly delivered iPhone 4S, I have had the Mail app crash on a regular basis for me. The first several times it crashed shortly after loading, so no harm was done, but this afternoon I started writing a long email response to someone on the iPhone and it crashed back to the home screen in the middle of that and lost all my edits. So I tried composing the same email espouse on the iPad, and then the same thing happened and I lost all my edits a second time. I now realize that, until a patch for Mail comes out, I can no longer rely upon it for any serious email usage, and that is very disappointing.

Is it just my pair of iOS5 devices that are suffering from this, or are others seeing the same thing?

Thanks,

- David

Here's a summary of what I have tried without success:

+Restored phone (iPhone 4s) and configured as "new phone," manually entering settings

    +Replaced phone

    +Replaced SIM card

+Emptied "deleted items" via webmail interface

    +Updated to iOS 5.0.1

+Restored phone, manually entering mail (POP3) settings, without synching any settings, contacts, media, apps, etc. and without enabling iCloud

+Disabled SSL, entered alternative settings for the incoming & outgoing mail servers and the ports

+Took it to Genius Bar 4 times, four different genii (genius baristas/bartenders?) were stumped but one said she was writing a letter to Apple's corporate HQ on my behalf to alert them to the bug. Fortunately, it crashed while she was experimenting with it so she saw how frequently it happens, which is very frequently.

Since it crashes when all I've entered is my Apple ID and my POP3 settings, I think it must be related to how it connects to my hosting company's servers. My hosting company is "The Small Business Authority" (thesba.com) formerly known as Crystaltech. I can't help but wonder if other customers of this company are having similar problems. I may have to change hosting companies--not the end of the world, but shouldn't be necessary. My iPad 2 with iOS4 still works great, as does my iPhone 3G, with the exact same settings.

It also seems like it might not crash when I'm connected to WiFi, but maybe that's just my impression because I'm so rarely on WiFi that I haven't noticed it happening in those rare instances.

My phone screen also kind of flickers (or more accurately, the image shakes very quickly up and down) sometimes when downloading attachments. Not sure if that's related, but seems like it might be.

IOS 5 is not a mature OS the best way to get rid of the IOS 5.x it has so many bugs and crashes... best is downgrading back to 4.3.x (the most stable version was 4.3.2 we need to stay there!!!

We all need to ask apple to restore the signatures to old IOS versions antill IOS5 will be more stable...

I am having the exact same problem on iphone 4s ios 5.0.1. i open mail, whether from lockscreen notification, or home screen. takes at least 20-30 sec to load, if it even loads without crashing. sometimes it will indicate loading, then freeze, then crash...or just open to a blank screen, then crash. i often see the preview text in notifications, but then when i go to it, its a crapshoot as to which of the array of behaviors will follow. there are , of course, some instances where it behave as it should, being as snappy as the rest of the apps. All of my battery life woes have been remedied with this update, but mail problem goes back to 5.0 also. i have tried rebooting, restoring, and the trip to apple store to trade in (hooray for apple care!) any other similar grief/possible solutions out there? Thanks!

Same Here. IPhone 4S. on 5.0.1

    1.     Mail App Crashes Often.

    2.     Some Time No Push Email so need to Kill the Mail App and Push Email Flows.

    3.     Some Time Voice Quality was very Bad, I can hear other End but they can not hear me ( Voice Breaking ).

    4.     Need to Restart the IPhone then it's ok for Some Time.

The iphone4 is my first apple product.  ios4 worked fine with no issues.  Upgrade to ios5 and I have the email crashing issue.  I got a brand new phone, set it up as a new phone and I still have the email crash issue.  I went with apple because it worked.  Very frustrating!!

An update: Over the last two days it has been reality stable. I can get about half a days worth of e-mail (over all) across all acounts, then it starts craching. To me, it seems that there is an issue with an individual message, from my imap account, which is being downloaded. However, I have not been able to pinpoint the source.

Hopefully the next update address this.

I can honestly say, that I have tried and tried several things to pinpoint a reason to why the mail crashes all the time. I never had this problem on ios 4.xx, it came instantly when I upgraded to ios 5. I have it both on the iPad Gen1 and on the iPhone4.

It crashes in the middle or the end of the message, totally random. It crashes wether it is a reply from Lotus Domino/Notes, MS Exchange, Blackberry, Androids, Symbian etc.

Some times it crashes directly when I open the mailapplication. I have also noted that sometimes when I open some other app it craches, almost like it bounce back.

This is not only annoying but also it have a big impact on how I manage my work. The meaning with a smartphone is that you use it as a small computer and amongst other things read and write emails. Now I tend to take my laptop with me everywhere just to write emails.

I just updated both my 1st Gen Ipad and IPhone 4 with IOS5.0.1. What a mistake that was! I should have read these thread first.

No problem in receiving emails, but both devices crashed when tried to reply. Is there a way to restore back to previous OS?

After 6 weeks, problem solved. As it turns out, there was some kind of incompatibility between the new mail software in iOS 5 and the hosting company I was using for my mail. I switched to a different provider, and mail no longer crashes. I was sorry to leave them after 7+ years, and I know it was the fault of a bug in iOS 5, but there was no other way I could solve the problem other than switching back to my old phone or switching to Android, neither of which appealed to me much. For the record, the company I was using was Newtek a.k.a. Crystaltech a.k.a The Small Business Authority. I wish the rest of you the best of luck!

Has anyone reading these post heard any news on how close Apple is to providing a fix??  Not knowing anything just continues to make me more and more ******.  I know Apple is typically very tight lipped but *** - their product is failing.
