iPhone 4s, echo when using apple headset during a call

I'm having an issue with my 32 gb iPhone 4s with Rogers. When using the Apple hands free headset with the phone during a call, I get an echo problem. It does not occur immediately. It can very from 30 seconds into a call and as far up to 9 mins in before it begins the annoying echo. If I unplug the headset it goes away but will return when I plug the headset back in. I have tried 3 brand new iphone 4s headsets with the same problems. So far I have tried rebooting, and also restored phone back to factory original settings as a new phone and still no resolution. I have been told by the other person on the line a screech sound is made then the echo begins.

Hello, I have the same problem, not only using the headset. Generally, while I'm on the phone with somebody, sometimes they tell me that they hear some noises, and it is very annoying. Then we have to end call and recall again, then is already everything fine. While using headset in 5.0, sometimes I was getting very very very strange noises, like as in aliens movies. Update helped in that case but now we have echo problems.

Please fix also the tone adjustments after using Siri, sometimes the loudness is hanging and my phone is very loud, if you get some SMS or Email during call and the sound is on you can get hearing loss for a while. I dont think that it could be difficult to find the reasons and solutions for this problems.

Please help us.

Regards,

Levan

I think one of the reasons why threre aren't too many people complaining is that not everyone uses the phone with the earpiece... I bet that there are many out there that have this issue and don't know it because they don't use the earphones.

At this point I hope that everyone filled the official form describing our problem to apple so they can work on it right away!

Levan - I returned the 4s and got a second 4s which had the same problem though a LOT less frequently - which makes me wonder about it being hardware vs. software. I then returned that and had AT&T replace the SIM card in my old 3G so it would work again. And the sound/volume/etc. is perfect 🙂

For me, the volume was even sometimes too loud holding the phone against my ear - so I held it about 2" away which is not practical to say the least. But that might have been some Siri interference. I just don't have a lot of time to worry about how to change settings to fix this and was not so enthralled with the new features that I wanted the 30 day return window to pass!

btw - I did already submit a report to apple, plus the two visits to the Genius bar.

I hope Apple will handle faster and bring up a new update, because if these problems are not solved, I will return my phone also, it is dangerous to health (loudness and strange acoustic of incoming message/email/notification tones during call). Annoying noises during call is a not good (unserious) sign and telephone support (as always and almost all providers, in Germany i.e.) are just trying to bring you to do phone restore. After that they are offering to change a phone, good service ---- very nice, but what brings ít to me, if it is a just software problem?

Of course is this iPhone fantastic one, with Siri has Apple and iPhone a big and different future. But these are problems that should be solved, otherwise losts Apple many clients.

With update 5.0.1. the battery life has been solved a little bit. I have all services off because of battery life...

I think and hope that Apple is working already on these issues.

P.S. also hoped for built in keyboards for Georgian and other (not extinct) languages.. 🙂

Hey Renato,

strange... the echo does not come out when I use without the earphones... have you tried replacing the phone? you may want to check out other threads as well... as this one is specific to the echo when using the apple headset..

this is my 3rd iphone 4S and I still have the echo problem only when I use the headset... never when I use it without...

I had echo and voice distortionon my first Iphoe 4s.Iam on my second Iphone and 3rd simcard. The third sim card seems to have improved the call quality but the echo and voice distortion is still there depending on the strength of network coverage. If the network is 3 or less bars then as the calls progress the network coverage starts falling and hence the quality of the call become worse or dropouts completely.I have a feeling its a network issue rather than hardware. My carrier thinks its a phone issue and Apple thinks its a network issue.Should I get my third Iphone 4s? or ditch it forever

I'am with Virgin moble Australia

Here's a quick update on the microphone feedback / echo issue. I tested all the iphone 4 models at the apple store and all had the microphone feedback issue. I tested my friend's 4S and my sister-in-law's iphone 4 (all running ios5), and all had the feedback problem. This means the problem is not unique to the new 4S models fresh off the assembly line. Just to make sure my headset was working properly, I tested my brother's iphone 3GS (on older software) with the same headset and it worked perfectly with no echo or feedback. I also used the same headset with my iphone 3G just prior to upgrading and it worked fine.

Another interesting thing that I noticed was that the iphone 4 had the same complaints last year when it was first released. Here's an example of that discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2516767?start=0&tstart=0

Perhaps it is a hardware problem that has been around since the iphone 4 was released and the problem is resurfacing only now because most of us are just now upgrading from the 3G or 3GS. Maybe all the people who had the iphone 4 either switched to an android phone or started using bluetooth and the problem was never resolved. I really hope I am wrong about this theory. Has anyone reading this switched from an iphone 4 to 4S and noticed the problem start? Or has anyone noticed the problem start when upgrading the software on an iphone 4 to ios5? Does anyone use a headset with an iphone 4 and NOT have microphone feedback?

My sister and I both had the 3G, and upgraded to the iPhone 4 last year, never had this issue with either phone. Had the echo/feeback issue right from day one with our iPhone 4S's, however the update to 5.0.1 solved the issue for us.

Regardless, I am getting my third replacement iPhone 4S this week, to try and resolve the noise cancelation not working, plus I now have another problem where my mic button (to answer phones/start stop ipod) will suddenly (randomly) stop working.

my friend has an iphone 4s and he uses the headset all of the time because his speaker doesn't work (hasn't had a chance to get it fixed yet). while he doesn't talk on the phone a lot, he does not experience any echo problems - except when talking to me since my iphone 4s had echo problems. he is on the same carrier in the same city.

Re whether iPhone 4 had this issue my personal experiences was I got iPhone 4 on launch day and never had a problem until I dropped it into the lake. Apple was generous enough to replace it with another and it never had an issues either. But both of my iPhone 4S have garbling/feedback issues with headset since the day I got them.
