iPhone 4s, echo when using apple headset during a call

I am having the same issue both on speaker phone & headphones. iPhone 4s Black 16GB AT&T

I have an appt. today at Genius Bar but it doesn't sound like even replacing the phone will help. I read on another Forum that it is most likely a software issue. Wondering if I should cancel my appt. & wait on Apple or try having the phone replaced.

According to a software engineer at Apple, echo cancellation is software related. I too will refrain from the hassle of exchanging my 4S and just wait for a patch to come out.

It doesn't make my 14-day trial with Sprint any easier as I'll be stuck with the phone and plan if a hot fix isn't published. Guh...

It's been all over Google since the day the 4S was released along with the problem with outgoing calls. Either you work for apple or you don't know how to perform a proper search.

I have provided feedback also but I assume that apple watches the most active boards first. There are a lot of views but not many replies...especially with the number of 4ss that have been sold. Wondering if it is a profile/restore issue.

As I contenplate going to the Apple store every day can anyone confirm that a new phone with no restore worked for them?

What has NOT worked to stop echo:

trying old apple earbuds

restoring and starting phone as a new phone

tested sims card on another 4s and that was fine

new phone

I worked with a senior technician at applecare. must have been on phone for 2 hours.

I just called her and this is her day off but she said the next stop was an engineer.

I will post after that conversation.

everyone should call applecare and report the problem. Ask for a senior technician. plan on a few hours.

Are you referring to me because I have a TELUS iPhone? TELUS launched a GSM compatible HSPA network back in 2009, the TELUS iPhone is not CDMA based (case in point, TELUS offers the 3GS, which never had a CDMA version).

Unless there is someone else on the thread that I have missed, this seems to be a GSM only problem. In my mind, this is a problem with the mic or a software glitch.... I don't think this would be an antanae issue??

I've already wiped and restored my phone as a new phone (this problem was only part of the reason... I wanted a fresh start). I'm wondering if it is something to do with Siri? I'm going to disable SIRI, reboot my phone, and see if that fixes it?

Who knows. Someone will figure this out eventually. I'm holding off on getting the phone replaced for now.

I'm fairly certain I've found out what is causing this issue.

When your headphones are plugged in, and you have the "raise to speak" feature enabled for siri, it will cause the echo for the person you are talking to if you accidentally raise the phone and turn on siri.

Solution: Disable the raise to speak feature for siri (or stop accidentally activating it during calls).

Brollikk - Oh, how I wish it were that simple. But, I know that is not the cause of the issue for me, as when this happens, I'm not even touching my iphone. So, I'm not activating Siri during calls.

I've reported this via the link someone else provided on this thread (along with several other problems - like email downloading hanging up on the last message). But, it seems Apple is just silent on this and many other issues. :-(

I've had raise to speak disabled from day one, just because I found the feature didn't really work anyways. That is not what is causing the issue.

However, I completely disabled siri on my iPhone, rebooted the phone, then spoke for about 23 minutes spread over 2 phone calls last night and it worked good. I'm going to do further testing today but maybe there is some bug in the Siri software???

Doubt Siri has anything to do with it. I've never had it activated on my phone.

Difficulty is that this is an intermittant fault. Some calls go off okay, others are awful. And longer calls are more likely to be affected. There's just no telling (other than not using the apple headset).

Yeah, I don't think that Siri is listening you calls... So, here is my test. I had a 17 minutes phone call while driving with my windows up, not much background noise or whatsoever and the phone call was clean and clear as water. My second phone call went about 5 minutes but, I decided to pull down my window so I get some environmental noise and I got the echo after running a minute or so. When I think about my previous experiences it happens to have about the same pattern, some background noise. Seems like either the earbuds or the iphone try to handle the background noise and the result is this annoying echo.

So, we could be guessing what the real problem is for the next 10 or 15 days with no answer from apple. What we can do, for those that visit those technical blogs or something like that (gizmodo, lifehacker, macrummors, etc), we can send them an email, so they can test it, and write an article about this, so it's public... so apple takes some action about this..
