Q: iPhone 4s, echo when using apple headset during a call

I'm having an issue with my 32 gb iPhone 4s with Rogers.  When using the Apple hands free headset with the phone during a call, I get an echo problem. It does not occur immediately. It can very from 30 seconds into a call and as far up to 9 mins in before it begins the annoying echo. If I unplug the headset it goes away but will return when I plug the headset back in. I have tried 3 brand new iphone 4s headsets with the same problems. So far I have tried rebooting, and also restored phone back to factory original settings as a new phone and still no resolution. I have been told by the other person on the line a screech sound is made then the echo begins.

Yes, i can my own voice back to me also through the headphones, which is off-putting! very quiet echo

So disappointed, changed the phone today and still the same echo problem when using the headphones, kicked in about 10 minutes into a phone call.

I just HOPE that Apple is doing SOMETHING to resolve this asap, a phone I can't make calls on isn't much use.

From what i've read online, and experienced, it sounds like a noise-cancellation software glitch so hopefully there'll be software update ASAP to fix this problem.

I've noticed an echo without ear buds. I wonder if it has something to do with the dual antennas?????? That would explain the universal experience over all carriers.

Oh yes, I was harping on about this 3 days after '4s Friday', a couple of weeks ago. O2 said they'd not had a single complaint about 4s which was worrying, thought I'd bought a dud'en. The 14 days exchange period was rapidly approaching and they had none in stock!

Eureka! found this discussion group's posts with which I wholeheartedly concur.

Earphone echo/hiss/white noise after 5 minutes or so but the length of time before it 'happens' is random.

As one member said, this isn't working (fully) as phone and making an imprtant call is risky, one never knows when one will have to end the call and redial, highly unprofessional.

Helloooo.....Apple.....The best phone in the world?.....an acknowledgement please??? Personally and hopefully I reckon it's a software problem for which in the near future we'll see corrective update.

But, really, it's not cricket is it.

And while I'm here...Siri...in the UK....bit of joke, no?

In the hope of encouraging Apple to address this problem,, I add my voice to yours. The echo / interference generally occurrs after 70 to 90 seconds, with once yesterday at around 12 minutes.

This is my second 4S. Both devices have also evinced quite woeful battery life.

Looks like the problem is caused by our backups!!

I've had the exact same issue. Apple replaced the first phone but the second phone suffered from the same issue after I returned home and restored from backup. On advice from technical support, I wiped the new phone and set it up as a new phone rather than restore from backup ... And no sign of the problem since!!!

Not only did I set up both of mine as new on AT&T with a new sim card, but my Dad didn't even have an iPhone before getting his on verizon, so he was really starting from scratch. We both have the same problem.

Have all of you contacted Apple directly referencing this thread specifically? Also, post this issue on the tech blogs. The more coverage the better chance Apple will address the issue.

OnYourBike — my sister and I both tried setting up as new phones, and still experienced the issue. I don't think that fix will last long for you.

On my 3rd 4S, Same issue.

Restored 2nd unit before turning it in, appeared to work but was disappointed to find out on a conference call, that it wasnt fixed! Ran into another issue with fast depleting battery.

Back with the echo problem - Spoke to the Genuis Bar rep, both times they said they didnot hear of this issue before.

I strongly suspect this is could be an issue with certain serial #;s. Below is my serial # except for the last 2 digits.

Can every one who has this issue respond on this thread with their serial # only... we maybe able to see a pattern here (long shot but doesnt hurt to try... and hopefully APPLE will see a pattern in here too.)

Serial number can be found at: Settings->General->About->Serial Number

    My Serial #

    C38GJQM6DT??

    AT&T, 16GB Black, NJ

** For those of you with a battery problem, Genius Bar rep said the Location Services was crashing constantly.(didnt know why. Solution: Phone Restore!)

could be just a coincidence.. but... my original iphone's serial number was:

    DNPGJF6PDTDK

then I replaced it with another with serial number:

    C39GJBG7DTDK

then, on the 3rd try, they replaced my phone with

    C39GKHNKDTDK

the 3rd phone worked like a charm.. didn't have any echo or battery problem... the pattern I see is the number.. the first 2 iphones had 2 sets of numbers between the letters.. except the third one which was a good one that only had one set of number...

I have the same problem. I tried with different headsets and this is my 2nd iPhone 4s.

I'm with 3 (UK) and my serial number: C39GJ6CJDTC0

If this is the network problem as the Genius bar told me, it should not happens with my 3GS or iPhone 4 before. And at the end of our discussion, I got from Apple's Genius Bar: "Practically I don't have any solution for your problem, sorry" !!!
