Q: iPhone 4s, echo when using apple headset during a call

I'm having an issue with my 32 gb iPhone 4s with Rogers.  When using the Apple hands free headset with the phone during a call, I get an echo problem. It does not occur immediately. It can very from 30 seconds into a call and as far up to 9 mins in before it begins the annoying echo. If I unplug the headset it goes away but will return when I plug the headset back in. I have tried 3 brand new iphone 4s headsets with the same problems. So far I have tried rebooting, and also restored phone back to factory original settings as a new phone and still no resolution. I have been told by the other person on the line a screech sound is made then the echo begins.

I posted early about hearing the "echos".  I too have an iPhone 4 and not the 4S.  My problems only started happening after I upgraded to iOS 5.  I can actually hear echo's with or without using a headset.  I'm really beginning to think it's a bug in the OS and not the hardware which is reassuring actually, since then there might be a software fix they can release!

So again, this thread is for people using the hands free headset and having the sound of the other caller drop to a low level and hearing static while your voice-to the other caller echoes. You are not hearing the echo yourselves, correct?

    Confirmed.

I'm now wondering if it has something todo with 3G.

Had some shorter phonecalls on Edge at seemed fine, but need to test more.

    Correct.

I have asked for a support call for Friday morning from Apple.

Same issue here... I get the echo after 1-5 mins on a call with a wired headset. I haven't tried the speaker phone trick yet, but will going forward.

I can't believe there's not more in the media about this! Jobs soon gave a staement after the iPhone 4 signal disaster, but nothing about this problem or the battery issue(not that I've been affected by that). From reading many posts it appears the problem is iOS5 borne rather than a hardware issue. I eagerly await a statement from Apple. I have just taken out a new 18month contract and with a disaaaasterous period with an Nokia N95 8gb, I am naturally apprehensive.

You hear the echo or your caller does?

This might be a seperate issue. I have noticed this too on a couple of calls without a headset.

I have this problem too. I don't notice a difference, but caller on other end complains of horrible echo when I am using the apple headset provided with the iphone 4s. Have not tried the speaker toggle but will try it if it happens again. Apple please fix!

Looks like this issue is finally getting some media attention. Hoping Apple will get their act together and admit there is an issue AND they are working on a solution!!!!

To 'timothyfromcastle'  you may want to check if the person your talking to is also using an iPhone with the headset.  I also hear my own voice from time to time, however on every occasion I've been speaking to someone with an iPhone 4S.

I've opted not to get a replacement as its looking more and more likely to be a software issue rather then hardware. Plus I can't be bothered to go through the pain of having to reapply a screen protector !!

Problem happens with our without the use of the headset.

Me and wife just exchange our iphone 4s yesterday to a different 4s.  she experience the same problem today with her phone.  definitely not a hardware issue.  Apple should atleast acknowledge the issue.  and reassure all the 4s user that fix is coming. maybe majority of 4s owners will not go back to the store and return and say that the phone is deffective.

Its just gonna get more expensive for apple, but i just want a reliable working phone.

The same thing here.  But when I use my old blackberry's headphone, no such a problem. One can easily get one OEM headphone on amazon for $1.  Iphone4 has the antenna problem, now iphone4s has the echo problem. Apple is really not good at making phones. What are those testing engineers doing there?
