Q: iPhone 4s, echo when using apple headset during a call

I'm having an issue with my 32 gb iPhone 4s with Rogers.  When using the Apple hands free headset with the phone during a call, I get an echo problem. It does not occur immediately. It can very from 30 seconds into a call and as far up to 9 mins in before it begins the annoying echo. If I unplug the headset it goes away but will return when I plug the headset back in. I have tried 3 brand new iphone 4s headsets with the same problems. So far I have tried rebooting, and also restored phone back to factory original settings as a new phone and still no resolution. I have been told by the other person on the line a screech sound is made then the echo begins.

I have a brand new iPhone 4S, and a set of Etymotic HF3 headphones.  I've even gone so far as to have splurged for the custom earbuds made from a casting of my ear canal.  I absolutely loved these with my 3GS, but with my 4S they are pretty much unusable for phone calls.

As soon as I start to dial, I can suddenly hear the surrounding noise.  It's being picked up by the headset mic, and transmitted into the heaphones.  So much for noise isolating headphones.

I contacted Etymotic, and they say this is a 'feature' of the new iPhone, and that they can't do anything about it.

I'll tell you that i don't use a headset but still i experience the same thing, exactly when i start dialing. By this way i check how it goes and if i hear myself i just make speaker on/off trick and it works again before whoever on remote end comes alive

With Jawbone Era bluetooth I have some echo and slightly broken calls - as if the phone has a loose wire.

I have not noticed these issues on the phone alone.

    iPhone 4S on Rogers.

Why isn't this issue getting more attention from Apple.  The forums are also filling up on macrumors with this same issue.  The echo issues seems to have the same amount of complaints as the battery problem, but Apple continues to ignore this issue.

By the way my wife and I are experiencing the same issue.

Same here. I even thought the hf3 was the issue and exchanged it with them. Then later realized it was the iPhone. It seems like the mic is amplifying the noise right in to the headset. Very irritating.

If you cover the mic on the headset, the amplified background noise goes away.

According to Etymotic, this is a side effect of the iPhone noise cancellation.

I did confirm that if I take my iPhone4S headphones out of hte box and cover my ears, that I can hear the same effect.  It's just a lot more noticable with Etymotics because they block out all the background noise.

All I want is the ability to disable the built in noise cancellation, since it is doing me more harm than good.

Bought a 32 GB Black 4S and a 16 GB Black 4S, both on ATT.

Hear echo of my own voice in headset and with earbuds on both phones. Voice sounds 'robotic', like there is a slight delay. Sometimes on a call, my voice completely cuts out and the other person can not hear me but I can hear the other person. No one has complained about hearing echo on their end of the line. Battery is fine on both phones.

    Replaced both phones on Tuesday.

Echo still present on both phones. Had to restart a call because the other person couldn't hear me after a few minutes. 32 GB phone now has terrible battery life.

My friend also has a white 16GB 4S on ATT that has the echo problem.  Out of 5 phones, all have the echo problem.

I guess I'm going to replace them again and will keep doing so until I get working phones or Apple publicly states that this is a software bug that will be fixed soon.

I've got the echo too!  Started the day I upgraded to the iPhone 4S.  No problems for 3 years on AT&T . . . now I can't even have a call last more than 5 minutes before the other person complains about a debilitating echo...

Same problem here with Verizon and wired Klipsch.  Apple needs to move fast to resolve these quality issues.

I have a black 32gb 4s on O2 UK and I also get an annoying echo (without headset) with about 1 in 3 calls!  This is really starting to get annoying!  Any word on if this is a hardware or software issue?

Earlier I have only had problem with headset and that the people in the other end will get echo after 3-5 minutes and they can't hear what I'm saying. Also when using the headset I hear myself in the earphones.

Today I made a call with the headset and now both me and the other person was getting insane echo,

the echo started straight away when the person in the other end picked up the phone.

Both expirenced very loud echo and it sounds like the other person is talking from the bottom of a sea...

The echo is so loud that a conversation is impossible.

So going from that only the person in the other end having echo, we now both had the loud echo sound.

After calling the person back (without headset), I then plugged in the headset again and we could talk normal untill the call ended (10 minutes).

This is very annoying and clearly there is a problem with something, that Apple should give some feedback on asap.

    Hello,

I live in France, I'am at the operator SFR and I have the same problem.
When I use my Iphone 4S with the headset supplied I hear myself with echo and the person hears me after a few minutes with an echo too, after several minutes it is very unpleasant for the speaker and must disconnect the headset.
This problem seems software, thank you Apple to provide a fix asap.

    Thanks

I am on my second 32gb black 4s from O2 UK and still the problem persists exactly as described in this thread... Now talking to Apple in Ireland who stated they are unaware of the problem so I have also sent them a link to this thread for training purposes. Tried reset, new sim, different headphones, testing sim in different 4s all to no avail..

It's bloody annoying that this special feature we are encountering was not part of Apples marketing!!! I for one am rapidly losing the elegiance towards Apple.

Not sure whether Apple understands that they exist because of us not that we exist because of them!!!!
