Q: iPhone 4s, echo when using apple headset during a call

I'm having an issue with my 32 gb iPhone 4s with Rogers.  When using the Apple hands free headset with the phone during a call, I get an echo problem. It does not occur immediately. It can very from 30 seconds into a call and as far up to 9 mins in before it begins the annoying echo. If I unplug the headset it goes away but will return when I plug the headset back in. I have tried 3 brand new iphone 4s headsets with the same problems. So far I have tried rebooting, and also restored phone back to factory original settings as a new phone and still no resolution. I have been told by the other person on the line a screech sound is made then the echo begins.

I had been with Andriod all along. Got a new iPhone 4S on Verizon. So far I was never able to use the 4S on my car using the Aux Input. Everything is fine on my end, but the party on the other end complain so much that I have to disconnect from the Aux Input. Siri always drives me crazy with the "network not available" message. Overall I am very unhappy and planning on going back to Andriod.

Good point. I haven't had an issue with the normal headphones. I wonder if there is an issue with the third connector.

Yep i went to the Apple store to figure out what i have to do to return the phone. Then I went to ATT and was checking out the Galaxy S2. I think that is my next phone.

Hi all, Im on O2. Same problem, although I get the echo without headset. With the headset people complain they cannot hear me, also just generally poor line/breaking up etc. O2 claim not to have heard anything about this, sim swap and restore completed today - no better. Arranging to replace the handset now.

I learned something new yesterday.  When I make FaceTime calls, the microphone doesn't pick up the noises around me and transmit them down into my noise isolating headphones.  So, this is not a hardware problem, this is software; since the behavior of the same hardware is different between cellular and FaceTime calls.

    HI there,

I just wanted to chime in as well and state I am having the same problem. It occurs on the Apple provided headset and appears garbled within 10 minutes. The speaker on off workaround does the trick but not ideal.

There is definitely a bug here. Hope Apple fixes it in 5.0.1

I hate to add to this, but on top of the garbled speech through headphones issue, my 4S has now started randomly silencing calls.

Pressing speaker on/off trick works as a fix to the silenced call too, but I'm getting a little tired of constantly being on on edge whenever I hear a bit of static on the line or pronged silence, as to whether I need to press the button again...

I'm using 4s 64GB black. From the first day, It annoyed me whenever I call. I thought, it was because, new iphone design. But, everybody says it is a serious bug. No wonder that I felt inconvenient using handsfree. Please fix this problem on next update.

I have tested this problem. Actually, this is happened when I make a normal phone call. But, it doesn't happened when I do facetime or Skype. It is defenitely cureable bug. Apple developer should fix this bug asap on next update.

I'm having the echo as well, though both with and without the headset.  From reading everyone's posts it looks like the majority of folks just have the problem with the headset.  I really hope my phone isn't just broken since it's getting the echo in both cases.  Crossing my fingers for a fix soon because it's really annoying to both me and whomever is on the other line.   (16G 4S)

I can't speak for anyone else, but I rarely use my phone without my headset.  For all I know the problem could be happening without it and I just haven't used the phone alone enough to have noticed.

Yes, I have the same issue.   It seems everyone has the same problem.   I returned my iphone 64GB because of the echo problem when using headset.   I usually use headset when I am driving.   I can't just switch the speaker on and off when I am driving.   Doesn't matter it always come back again in few minute.   I can't believe that Apple phone always have a problem.   iPhone 4 had signal issue now this generation iPhone 4S has echo and status noise.   I used to be a fan of apple.   Now I don't feel I like apple anymore.   I ordered a new phone 64GB will see if the problem occurs again I will return it back and won't buy it again.   I don't like to return or exchange all the time.   it waste my time by doing this.   and the clients service in apple are not that nice too.
