Q: iPhone 4s, echo when using apple headset during a call

I'm having an issue with my 32 gb iPhone 4s with Rogers.  When using the Apple hands free headset with the phone during a call, I get an echo problem. It does not occur immediately. It can very from 30 seconds into a call and as far up to 9 mins in before it begins the annoying echo. If I unplug the headset it goes away but will return when I plug the headset back in. I have tried 3 brand new iphone 4s headsets with the same problems. So far I have tried rebooting, and also restored phone back to factory original settings as a new phone and still no resolution. I have been told by the other person on the line a screech sound is made then the echo begins.

I have the echo/audio issues with my iPhone 4S too.  But I get problems when using any headset as well as without using a headset at all.  Most of the time, I notice that I can hear myself in my headset.  To confirm it's not just in my head, I usually cup the microphone or end of the iphone and speak loudly and then i can really hear myself coming out of the iphone speaker or headphones.  It's really disturbing.

I've also had complaints that a horrible echo develops for the person on the other end of the line that I'm talking to.

If an Apple engineer wants to call me, let me know.

Mines being replaced by O2 although they are adamant that they have not heard of any problems. Just don't but it I'm afraid, momentums certainly building on quite a number of forums about this....

Same issue here, hear myself talk and echo complaints from the person I'm talking with.  I'm on my second iPhone and third headset.

Hope a fix comes out soon or I'm returning back to my 3GS!

Had exact same garbled call issue as h-mac and dcouns.  iPhone 4s (AT&T, 4 bars, stock iPhone headset) call becomes hopelessly garbled after 5-10 minutes, forcing hang up and redial.  Didn't try switching to speakerphone and back as some suggest.  Never had any such issue with iPhone4 (AT&T) from this same location.  Have to hang-up and dial back into conf calls, or ring other person back.  AT&T confirmed no network issue in my area, Apple had me do a factory restore, finally Apple tech support directed me to store to get it swapped for another 4s.  Just got the replacement, no issue yet (fingers crossed) but will know better in a day or two.  Would love to know it is "fixed" instead of cringing everytime I'm on an important business call.

Same problem made worse while driving.

When using apple supplied headphones for hands free phone calls on iPhone 4S with AT&T I get a booming echo and static on the phone call after about 3-4 mins call time. This terminated many of my calls. I found that the problem is resolved if I unplug the earphones and hold phone to my ear. But this is a serious safety problem for me because now I cannot use hands free while driving as I could with my 3GS. Hitting the speakerphone button only fixes problem for short time. This not acceptable.  It seems to me this is a real problem with the most basic function of the phone which is to talk to people. This should be high priority fix for Apple to make because it involves driver safety.

Same here, almost every call now has this about a few minutes into the call, preorderded 4s, had it since street date. You can tell it's the new antenna kicking in and instead of dropping the call the echo/static comes in instead, not happy about this in the least

Me too, echo without headset all the time, Vodafone instantly said they they'd replace it (when they have one...), so there is a known problem here. This is basic stuff, clever though it is, it's prime function is A PHONE!

If my 8 year old Nokia can manage that without a problem, surely it's not beyond the wit of Apple?

Yeah I am having exactly the same problem! Is this a software bug? Every time I use the headset included, about 10-15 minutes into the call, there will be interference, echo and then the call will drop. Every time this has happened - very, very annoying!

    I have a suggested SOLUTION.

I set the volume on the headset loweer actaully to the lowest and I can hear fine and no feedback.  It works for me.  Try it and let the group know.

I Have just bought the iphone 4s 64gb in black and have found this problem with the ear peice as well. I use the head set a lot and I'm not very impressed as I've waited along time to buy this phone and it's the first one I've ever had. The eco gets really bad until you unplug the head set then it is fine but replace it and it just comes straight back. I also find that the battriey drain very fast and does not even last the day with light use. I am with Orange pay monthly.
