Q: iPhone 4s, echo when using apple headset during a call

I'm having an issue with my 32 gb iPhone 4s with Rogers.  When using the Apple hands free headset with the phone during a call, I get an echo problem. It does not occur immediately. It can very from 30 seconds into a call and as far up to 9 mins in before it begins the annoying echo. If I unplug the headset it goes away but will return when I plug the headset back in. I have tried 3 brand new iphone 4s headsets with the same problems. So far I have tried rebooting, and also restored phone back to factory original settings as a new phone and still no resolution. I have been told by the other person on the line a screech sound is made then the echo begins.

I experience the same thing on my 64 Gb iPhone 4S that I ordered directly unlocked from apple. Just to throw my two cents in hoping apple would acknowledge the bug and fix it.

I used the trick suggested by rickyufv and turned off the Siri raise to speak function.  The last call was 15 minutes without the dreaded echo problem using the Apple earphones.  Before, the problem would arise after 5 minutes or so.  Obviously, this is only a short term solution.  Hopefully this will be fixed in the next iOS update.

Why do you & we accept a phone that does not work 100%

We should be discounted the non working percentage, or simply get a new working one.

Would you accept a saucage with a rotten end, and hope they would treat it with enough chenichals to make it taste and look good?

The problem seems to me a hardware problem, and may be poor assembly. Noticed that incoming calls on my first 4s when vibrator was on, made an extra vibrating noise - i.e. loose speaker, printboard or what do I know.

This does not occur on the phone I purchased yesterday, waiting for the other at the repairshop.

Does Telenor and Apple think I will accept the repaired brand new phone?

    NOT!

However, those of us without the new hardware still have the problem(s) and do not have the option you describe mikebel74. I have had some luck with switching audio to the speaker and then back to my bluetooth headset. Alternately I grab the mike on my headset with my hand to shield it from any source of audio. After a few seconds I release it and that also seems to work to some extent. Lowering the volume on the headset has also had some short-term positive results. I hasten to add these are not my suggestions, but gleaned from among the nearly 300 replies to the original message in this thread from all over the world.

Apple, please, give this matter some urgent thought.

    thanks for reading...

On both my devices the behavior is:

    • Few minutes into call, I'll hear sudden change in background noise while person at other end experiences severe echo at the same time. This isn't gradual or subtle ... is sudden and significant. Importantly though, I never experience any echo at my end.
    • Switching audio sources fixes the problem for a while but it often reoccurs during long calls.
    • This issue has never occurred while calling with a Bluetooth headset or when using the handset on it's own (without the wired headphones)

    Other notes:

    • I've changed Network/SIM ... same behavior.
    • Both phones supplied by Apple. (Pre-order and in-store replacement)
    • Siri 'raise to speak' function has been off since day 1
    • Experienced issue with Siri ON and OFF

On an unrelated note and just in case it helps anyone: the battery life improved significantly after I disabled "Setting Time Zone" in Location Services / System Services. The battery issue has been acknowleged by Apply and is due in the hotfix. I just wish Apple would release a list own known issues to be addressed in the hotfix so we know whether the echo issue is receiving attention!

Perhaps you haven't been reading this thread.  The problem doesn't happen during FaceTime or Skype calls.  That proves that it is a software problem.  Unless you have other data you wish to present, it does NOT appear to be a hardware problem.

I have this last weeek bought 2 iPhone 4S(one of them i will give to a friend as a gift),one direct from Apple and one from Humac shop in Oslo. In both iPhones there are audiobugs..after some minutes there is a disturbing noice sound, and ecco of the voice from the person i´m talking to. This appairs on all calls.

Also when i make a call there often is silence,i can hear nothing when the call gets active.

These bugs are completely identical on both my 2 new iPhone 4S !

I have restarted and restored both 2 iPhones several times, but the bugs remains the same.

I also have had Siri off all the time.

Anyone who have a solution for these bugs?

I hope these are softwarebugs which Apple do repair on a softwareupdate soon!

    Nice!

I hope that EVERYONE here had the opportunity to file an "official" complaint by filling out the form http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html It's all good that we talk about it here in the thread etc.. but I think if all of us fills out the form, and it gets prioritized, then we wouldn't have to waste our times writing on threads like this one!

    bump!

I have this issue on about half the iPhones (about 10 iPhone 4Gs with AT&T) we recenlty purchased for our company.  I've tried all the above but the issue persists.

Hopefully the next software release will correct the issue.

You have the iPhone 4 running iOS 5?  I thought the problem was limited to the iPhone 4s.  Then it must be a software problem and fixable by an iOS update.  I have already sent feedback to Apple at  http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html and hope that everyone having the issue will do the same.  The issue is already showing up in the tech press.

    hi again mikebel74,

yes, sorry, I did not write my last post properly. I do have the iPhone 4 and not 4S, and I have updated to ios5. In fact, in an earlier post to this thread I pointed out that the problem started immediately after upgrading to ios5. At the time I spoke to a Genius who's a friend of mine, but all I got was the party line, "no problem, never heard of any such issue," etc. I have also sent feedback to the iPhone feedback link.
