Q: iPhone 4s, echo when using apple headset during a call

I'm having an issue with my 32 gb iPhone 4s with Rogers.  When using the Apple hands free headset with the phone during a call, I get an echo problem. It does not occur immediately. It can very from 30 seconds into a call and as far up to 9 mins in before it begins the annoying echo. If I unplug the headset it goes away but will return when I plug the headset back in. I have tried 3 brand new iphone 4s headsets with the same problems. So far I have tried rebooting, and also restored phone back to factory original settings as a new phone and still no resolution. I have been told by the other person on the line a screech sound is made then the echo begins.

Now they're removing our posts if they don't like them?  Wow Apple!  That's a new low.  And here I was wondering if they read these posts.  I guess I know the answer.

I've had this phone for 4 months already and still not a word about fixing this problem.  By the way, when I called customer service (2 months ago) they said they knew about the problem and that it is being worked on.

hey, I'm the one posted that message which Apple removed a couple days ago. well surprisingly it reached to everyone in this thread... great, I'm glad at least some of you had a chance to read it.

Since the removal, I felt like I should do something to protect my right as a consumer, and I did. Sorry Apple but you brought this on to yourself! I already wrote a complaint letter and sent to Bloomburg Businessweek, along with the email Apple sent me for removing my post, or I would call it "evidence of deprivation of free speech". Question is if they will pick it up and look into it. Any suggestions/connections where I could send it to?

An excerpt from the letter I wrote, you might find it amusing:

Title: iPhone 4S becomes “I-cho” phone

Ironically when asked “What’s the best phone in the world?”, Siri, a personal assistant functionality on iPhone 4S, will proudly reply “The one you are holding.” But as a matter of fact, 4S is probably the worst phone in terms of the functionality as a phone! It might be a cool feature-packed hand-held device, but NOT as a phone.

I made an analogy, it’s like a fancy toilet that talks “I am the best toilet in the world”, and just doesn’t flush several time each day!

Let’s not forget the lame-*** excuse from the late Jobs addressing the notorious “antenna issue” on the previous iPhone 4, quote “you’re holding it wrong.”

An Apple I-mprisonment ® through high-tech gadgets: “give us your money and shut the fxxx up”.

Justice needs to be served! And people need to face the fact that the late Jobs is not God.

Indeed - removing posts is a new low. Probably some clever person at Apple thinks that by removing posts from this forum they will stop users from telling the world about Apple's faulty 4S, their pathetic approach to (not) resolving the issue and their naivety in telling their staff to pretend "they've never heard of it".

In this case, instead of tackling this professionally, Apple seems to be doing all it can to escalate the problem, enrage their customers and, in fact, further motivate them to spread the word globally about this issue.

Echo-gate. Samsung and others will be very keen to hear about this. We must make sure they do.

I just can't believe  that there is no interest on the part of the media about this issue!  When the antenna problem showed up, that was all over the news.  I replaced my phone once, problem started up again after a few calls. Then I sent it back directly to Apple, to replace again, but they said the could not replicate the problem and sent it back to me.  Now it's doing it again.  I am so angry but can't figure out where to go from here.  I've tried everything they suggested but nothing works permanently.

I am guessing the techie media has too much Apple stock... I have posted details about this problem and Apple's censorship on my Facebook page--it's a start.. Maybe someone more clever than I am can make an "echo" video for YouTube starring Siri?  With lines like "Oh--you thought this was a phone..phone...phone?  Silly you..you...you"

Hey!! They let me back in here!! WoooHooo!!! I too am a unhappy customer who has been posting comments on this echoe issue. I also mentioned something about going to the media about this issue and wanted to reply to hhung516 last post and wouldn't you know it.....when I tried to get back into this forum it said I was unauthorized to enter. Dude! what a trip!!! Are you kidding me!!! WoW! All I can say is im glad i got my phone returned back to verizon b4 I was stuck with it. I realize Apple may never address this issue. However, just think about all the people who will never take a chance on another apple product because of it. I know I wont unless they fess up and admit theres a problem.

So I went to the "Genius" tonight and they acted so surprised and had never heard of the echo problem.

I had them reset the phone and upgrade or re-install the firmware. This did not fix the problem, however, even though I'm totally outside the return policy, they granted me an refund to turn the phone back to them. I still have a few more days to mull it over.

We live in a world where we have become so dependent on gadgets, software and material things to the point where we've removed people from the equation. And when those gadets and materials don't work, It's the poepole who make them that should step up and say, yes there is a bug we can fix it.

I switched to apple products many years ago because they were supposed to be the anti-microsoft, but sadly there isn't much difference.

IOS4 killed my iPhone 3g, and didn't hear a peep from Apple. Now the 4S has a bug. Hi, I'm a person, and you're a mac... A cludgy piece of glass, plastic and silicon prone to problems just like all the other hardware and software. To bad...

Same problem... When using earphones, the speaker amplifies the ambient noise so much that I can't even hear the other side.

There should be some liability for selling hands-free phones that don't work with headsets.

Has anyone heard anything more on a solution to this problem, any word from Apple? I have had my iPhone 4S for 1 month and I need to use it for work either handfrees or with a headset and its just ususable. The speaker on / off tip only supplies a temporary fix (thanks anyway!) as the problem returns on long conference calls time and again. If anyone has heard anything please post, I am returning my iPhone today for a replacement but I'm concerned the problem will persist with the new phone. Best Regards.

I know that Apple are aware of the issue and have tickets in their system for the fix. IMHO I would expect the fix to ship with IOS 5.1 early next month. Hold tight until then, however, if the fix does not make the release then I don't know when it would be...

Unfortunatelly, the issue is not solved in iOS 5.1.

Can't say im glad they haven't been able to resolve this issue yet. But I can say I'm glad I returned my 4S back around xmas before my 30 days ran out. I was very skeptical they would ever fix the audio issue since Apple refused to ever acknowledge there was an issue. I decided to stick with my good ole LG flip phone that has awesome signal and audio call quality. I also had the option to replace my HTC TP2 work phone with any phone of choice with any network and decide to go with the Samsung Epic with slide out keyboard instead of an IPhone. Seems to work fine for me. Wish all you folks luck with your Iphone ;-)   Im sure the folks @ Apple will remove this message as they have with others.

So there are over 56,000 views and almost 500 posts and apple refuses to admit anything is wrong when using aftermarket hedphones that worked on all models but the 4s.  This is costing users tons of money and creating tons of e-waste all on the back of apple.  When will they agknowledge that they changed it so only headphones that they make money off of their chipsets will work with the 4s?  This is pure garbage and an obvious issue that they are aware of and will not talk about.  I have my headset that worked on my old iphones and even on my friends droid and blackberries and is garbage on the 4s.  ANSWER THE QUESTIONS FROM YOUR CUSTOMERS APPLE!

This is not the echo that the iphone user hears.  The echo is from the person the user with the is calling.  The person not on the iphone hears an echo on their phone and the iphone user thinks all is fine.  FIX IT NOW!  Its been months with out even acknowledging the issue?  How can apple get away with this?

Anyone else could confirm that iOS 5.1 update still does NOT fix this problem ?

Sure they have time to change the icon from "3G" to "4G" (fooling more users?) but no time solving the real problems like this one!
