Q: iPhone 4s, echo when using apple headset during a call

I'm having an issue with my 32 gb iPhone 4s with Rogers.  When using the Apple hands free headset with the phone during a call, I get an echo problem. It does not occur immediately. It can very from 30 seconds into a call and as far up to 9 mins in before it begins the annoying echo. If I unplug the headset it goes away but will return when I plug the headset back in. I have tried 3 brand new iphone 4s headsets with the same problems. So far I have tried rebooting, and also restored phone back to factory original settings as a new phone and still no resolution. I have been told by the other person on the line a screech sound is made then the echo begins.

It doesn't fix it.  I tested it yesterday at the sprint store.

Its a hardware problem, not software.

May I help you challenge that assumption?  Make a call via FaceTime or Skype.  Both engage the speaker and microphone at the same time, just like a phone call.  Neither have the same audio issues.  That evidence would seem to indicate that the issue is not with the microphone/speaker hardware, but rather with the software employed by Apple for making cellular calls.

Give it a try.  Let us know your results.

There were 2 echo issue withthe 4s.  The first issue with an echo on the iphone that where you had to activate the speakerphone to fix it has been resolved from what i hear.

The other issue is anyone with a single button headset.   Whenever someone makes a call with a single button headset with their 4s the person on the OTHER end will hear THEMSELVES echo not the iphone user.  Even if the person on the other end doesnt have an iphone.

Understood?  Im not trying to yell but just being clear as it seems many people are confused which echo problem they have.

I used to have this problem but the 5.01 update solved it so for me at least, so it was a software problem.

This was my (and my sister's) experience as well. 5.0.1 solved the issue.

For all of you that claim that 5.0.1 fixed the problem for you can you tell me what type of headphones you are using and if they have a volume control?

I have tried this on 5.0.1 on many phone with multiple headphones with no volume and the person on the other end still has an echo.

This was an issue with the included  headset with remote and mic on 5.0. Like others, 5.0.1 solved the issue. After installing that update I did do a hard reset on the device and the issue has never come up again. All is well since then and with 5.1. I know that it is an outstanding issue for many and I wish I knew why it persists for some and not others, but I can only report my own experience. This was a software issue for me and not hardware. Even Bluetooth headsets work flawlessly for me. The 4S call quality has been outstanding. Note that the only echo issue I experienced was with outgoing calls using the  included headset.

Exactly.  This new issue is anyone who has a headset with NO inline volume control.  Microphone only.  This is what im trying to get across.

Theissue is anyone who has a headset WITHOUT inline volume control.   They work with all previous versions of the iphone but not with th 4s.

rocksta01 I had the issue with the single button headset that caused the people at the other end to hear their own voices echo.

For those who have this issue the problem is 100% solved if the headset is changed to a non single button headset or to a volume controlled headset. The issue in this case is most definitely hardware and NOT Apple hardware.

Again, anyone with a single button headset, this means a button which starts and ends calls or starts and stops music, will NOT function with an Iphone 4S. You must change your headset to a 3 button headset.

This is only for those who place a call on an Iphone 4S and an echo is heard at the receiving end.

    Hello everyone,

This post regards the permanent echo the caller hear in the headphones during calls using apple headsets on iPhone 4S (hearing the echo of his/her own voice in the headphones during calls).

It's 4 months (since I bought my iPhone 4S) that I am trying to solve this problem. This is what I did:

    1) I went to 2 Apple stores to talk with a genius, both times they confirmed the problem and gave me every time a new phone.

    2) I called Apple care many times and they sent my third iPhone to Holland (twice) at the European support center to fix it. The first time they said they were not able to replicate the problem and sent it back untouched. The second time they replaced it.

I am now at my 4th iPhone 4S and the issue remains. I had the echo problem with all the four iPhones 4S I had. I called Apple care again and they didn't know what else to say or do. At the end I asked to spoke with a manager and he told me the echo problem affects all iPhones 4s in the world and that they know it and will try to fix it with a new update.

If you say you don't experience this problem please make a test. Place a call using headset on your iPhone 4S and speak holding the microphone close to your mouth. You will immediately hear the echo of your voice on your headphones. Every iPhone 4S I tried did the same. I live in Italy.

I guess there is nothing we can do about it at the moment. Anyway this is unacceptable and frustrating.

Please let me know your stories and if you experiencde this type of echo.

    Have a good day,

    Nick
