Q: iPhone 4s, echo when using apple headset during a call

I'm having an issue with my 32 gb iPhone 4s with Rogers.  When using the Apple hands free headset with the phone during a call, I get an echo problem. It does not occur immediately. It can very from 30 seconds into a call and as far up to 9 mins in before it begins the annoying echo. If I unplug the headset it goes away but will return when I plug the headset back in. I have tried 3 brand new iphone 4s headsets with the same problems. So far I have tried rebooting, and also restored phone back to factory original settings as a new phone and still no resolution. I have been told by the other person on the line a screech sound is made then the echo begins.

New iPhone 4s. 64G. At&T. I've tried three different aux cables in my car. They all cause the echo problem for the people that I call. Not too happy here. Probably have to return it.

I'm experiencing the same issue and feeling pretty discouraged. Have had a 4S for 2 1/2 weeks and had Apple replace it today but still getting feedback with my wired headsets when on a phonecall. It's like my voice and all the sounds around me are amplified and piped into my ears. It's downright chaotic... stressful even.

I have the standard headset that came with the phone, the other Apple headset with the soft earphones, and a Klipsch. The Klipsch was awesome with my iPhone 3GS but pretty much unusable unless i'm inside my house with no sounds around me... and that's ridiculous. I've used a wired headset for almost 5 years and never encountered an issue like this until i got a 4S.

So all you people who are saying it doesn't happen to you, what headset are you using? Why hasn't a single person mentioned what works. I sincerely doubt that any of them work.

And Apple, please fix this asap.

    iPhone 4S

When Sending a Call.  I hear my voice as an echo ~ 50% of the time.

Very annoying, makes it very hard to communicate

(My 4S also suffers from the "no sound when sending a call" issue also ~ 50% or more of the time)

I live in the far north of BC, very far from any apple service.  Can not afford to send my phone away and be without a phone.  Spent $800+ and having troubles using my iPhone as a phone.

    frustrating!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank You!

Grr. I have this problem too. The phone picks up every bit of noise around, and feeds it through the earpiece and drows out the call. It seems to something in the way that Apple has implemented noise cancellation, and I wish it could be disabled.... My headset is an Etymotic HF-3, for the record.

The Iphone echo while calling and using a headset is a constant problem for me. When I go to the Apple store or contact online support they say they've never heard of the problem, despite the lengthly chain of comments such as these.

is anyone aware that Apple has fixed this problem? I use my phone for work. On conference calls I can't use the headphone but must hold the phone.   It's a real annoyance.

I have White 64gb model... I had the same problem. The echo happened at the receiver's end. Went into Apple store and replaced it.. Even then the new phone has this issue. Apple store employees act as if they are unaware of this issue. And the issue is not 100% replicable. So I am really doubtful if I will get the second replacement. God Save Us....

I'm sorry to let you know this, but Apple and many of its technical service employees are fully aware of this problem. They pretend like they don't know because if this possibly hardware problem was widely known, apple would lose billions of dollars. Specially because of my driving, it has made my iPhone 4s far less usefull than my iPhone 3g, and EVERY single iPhone 4s has the problem whether the person thinks it fixed or not.

Why the **** else would they try to shut up thousands of people with pointless replacements. "HERE take a new iPhone, still a problem? here keep taking new ones until you give up and shut up." You are not seeing the big picture at all if you think that they don't know about the echo problem on your side.

Then what is the remedy to it. Today apple silently rolled out ios 5.1.1 hopefully the issue get fixed.

Listen, it is awesome if more people complain, but IT WILL NOT BE FIXED. and here is a link that covers the update.

    http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2404071,00.asp

the update has not touched on the issue and they will not either. At first I belived this to be an easy to fix software issue, but the way apple has been ignoring so many complaints (and how they have been ignoring this giant thread) it has become obvious that it is a hardware screw up that they are just happy that not too many people can notice.

5.1.1 does NOT resolve the issue.  I tested this 30 seconds after the update to my iPhone 4S finished.  The 'side talk' remains when making a phone call with my corded headset.

I didn't even need to try. I knew it wouldn't fix. Apple will never admit to this issue, they will keep replacing our phones till we shut up. Since it might be a hardware issue, it would cost them WAY TOO MUCH to officialy admit to the problem. Hence why despite our many logging entries they still act like it's not something they haven't heard of.
