Q: iPhone 4s, echo when using apple headset during a call

I'm having an issue with my 32 gb iPhone 4s with Rogers.  When using the Apple hands free headset with the phone during a call, I get an echo problem. It does not occur immediately. It can very from 30 seconds into a call and as far up to 9 mins in before it begins the annoying echo. If I unplug the headset it goes away but will return when I plug the headset back in. I have tried 3 brand new iphone 4s headsets with the same problems. So far I have tried rebooting, and also restored phone back to factory original settings as a new phone and still no resolution. I have been told by the other person on the line a screech sound is made then the echo begins.

Glad to know that I made the right choice when I returned my IPhone 4S back in December. I too was experiencing the same echo issues. I straight up did not like the way Verizon & Apple both were playing dumb about the issue. Unfortunately, people are brainwashed with these stupid phones as if they were the best thing to come along since the internet. This thing should be called a Drone and not a Phone. With all this so called technology out there, one would think that somebody could actually make a REAL....."SMART PHONE" Now you see what happens when companies like Apple manufacture their products in 3rd world countries making billions off the sweat of cheap labor. The consumers who purchased these defective devices deserve an immediate explantion from Apple. However......I doubt that it will make the echo go away lol! Good luck with those things!

I haven't had time to seriously test under different conditions, but I've been able to use my headset lately by plugging it in while the phone is asleep, and then waking it up to make the call. There's a moment of echo to start, and then it's normal. Would someone else please see if this works for them?

New Black iPhone 4S, 64GB, on Rogers in Toronto. Have had repeated echo problems where I hear an echo of myself when connected on a call with no headset or earphones. Just got off the phone with Apple Support. They had me do the following:

    Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

wait for the network to reset and reconnect to the carrier (in my case Rogers).

I made a test phone call with no echo (the first time with no echo)!

This seems to work, for now anyway.

All this being said, the Apple Support person did open the conversation saying that this is a network issue and if it persits I should call my carrier (Rogers) as it has something to do with the connection to the cell towers.

    Hope this helps.

Obviously your problem is not the same one as the one being talked about here. I tried what you said, it did not work. It does not seem at all possible for the network to be at fault when the problem only happens while using the headset.

I do understand the original post was regarding an ecgo using a headset, but I got here to this post as a result searching for a solution to my issue of me, the caller, hearing an echo of my own voice without a headset. There are numerous mention of my issue here, that is why I posted here.

I do recognize it may not be a solution for the original post, however it may be worth a try, and worth a try for those with similar, but slightly different issues.

I also must express my reservation about this being a permanent fix. I have me doubts for sure.

I'm sorry for being rude. The frustration is fully aimed at Apple.

No worries. I didn't actually think you were being rude, just keeping to the point of the original post.

echo issue occurs with or without headset. I exchanged my phone third time and still the issue persists. The issue occurs most frequently but not all times.

It goes off when you turn on/off the speaker button.

I bought an iphone 4s black 16gb for my bro and he does not face the issue. My co-worker has a 16gb black version and he does not have this issue.

i was on ATT and the echo happened when i called a person who is with ATT. Also noticed the same while making international calls through vonage extensions.

Now I am with T-mobile and the echo happens while calling ATT number, comcast customer support and while making international calls through vonage extensions. Mine is white 4s 64gb. Probably this issue is either with white model or with 64gb model. It definitely looks like a hardware issue.... a design flaw probably....

With iphone 4 i never had this issue....

However I dropped a note to Tim Cook and also highlighted this thread. Lets see if he replies back... I want to switch back to a black model or my money back by cash or a gift card

I am on my second iPhone 4S white 64gb on Fido network. I have no issues with echo.

I feel terrible for people experiencing these issues but it does not affect every phone.

I have black, 32gig iphone4s upgraded from same specs iphone4 2 months ago. Husband bought same 4s model same day, same store that I purchased mine. I have the problem of a serious echo of my own voice from my side of the call only. All my calls are without a headset of any make or model. I did have the same echo problem on my iphone4. I didn't have the problem on any of the models prior to the iphone4.

I have AT&T service which my husband is also on. He doesn't have the echo problem and never has. He has heard the echo on my phone and knows what to listen for and consistantly confirms that his phone does not have this problem (or any echo problem at all).  I have used his phone and find no trace of an echo problem such as I have.

I took my first 4s phone back to the Apple store yesterday, told them about the echo problem. The said "OK, I'll get you a new phone" which they did immediately and without questioning the issue.  I got the phone home, restored from my icloud and itunes backup and made a call. The problem remains exactly as with the prior phone.

Making calls with my iphone4 and my iphone4s is impossible. The echo is loud and delayed and is also intermittant but it happens 90% of the time.  Very distressed and disappointed in Apple. I have been a very big fan of the iphone and ipad. Starting to change my mind over the lack of Apple's resolve in resolving this problem.

The only positive to all of this is most of us are able to visit an Apple Store and have our phones replaced countless times, compared with other manufacturers where we would have to mail our phones for repair and wait. For this one reason and also the fact that overall the iPhone is better than other smartphones (take a look at the complaints concerning other phones).

Hi secouric, lets not divert the original issue here. I hope everyone who owns an apple product knows pretty much what you are talking about. We all know how apple earned 120 billion$ cash.... it is called customer delight.....

i have owned 3g, 3gs.. owning 4, 4s, ipad 1, ipad 2, ipad 3...... i clearly compare the quality of my 4s with the previous models... i never faced such issues before....

I have exchanged my phone 6 times, this is the 7th phone I am having. I am still facing the echo issue intermittently. I have paid 900$+ for my 64gb iphone 4s, I am not happy with it.....

I never bothered about buying an apple product each year, because I enjoyed and was happy... but not this time.....

Your response does not resolve my issue...... Are you meaning that I need to live with this issue? Can you take your discussion to a new thread....

Ok well back the discussion then. You should state your provider and if you are using a headset and if so what type.

I'm having the same problem on 4S 16gb with Verizon using a Plantronics Voyager Pro+ headset.

Most of my calls are to someone who does NOT have an iphone and he hears his own echo.  I do not hear it. Turning the speakerphone on/off fixes the echo problem momentarily.  I have noisy tires on my car and he says the echo goes away when I stop at a stoplight.  I'm trying turning down the volume on my headset but not sure yet if that makes a difference or not.  I know that the headset I use is very sensitive to wind noise and will have cutting out/loud noises when using in windy conditions outside or in my car with the AC blowing directly in my face.  (This happened with a previous, non-iphone.)  Turning off the AC in the car, or closing the vent that blows in my face seems to help.

I wonder if the posters who are hearing themselves echo are talking with someone who has an iphone with the same problem???
