Not necessarily. You can verify multiple addresses on the AppleID and simply make sure you select different ones to use for iMessage. You can also create seperately AppleIDs, but elect to use the same ID for App and iTunes Store. That is exactly what my wife and I do for our iPhones. It gives here access to my music on iTunes Match, as well as any apps I have already purchased, but seperate iCloud back up space and synching of things like Contacts and Calendars.

For iMessages on the ipad, can you send a group message to other iphones? Can you recieve a group message from other iphones. If someone sends a group message from an iphone, but the group contains one or more non-phone numbers, can my ipad recieve the message? Can I respond to group message even if my message won't go to the non-iphone?

I believe there may be some incorrect information in the message above.  ALL texts which are sent to me from any iphone show up on my iPad, even if they are sent using my cell number.  (I believe the message above said that if they are sent to my cell number they should only appear on my phone). This is a major problem.  I often want to keep personal texts on phone only and work can go to both.  Any suggestions?

Remove yrou cell phone number from the iPad.

    Settings > Messages - iMessage - Off.

Wait a minute then turn it back on.

Then tap Receive iMessages at... and delete what you don't want on the iPad.

For all of you who run into the mystery of iMessage not working sometimes: while searching for other explanations and solutions, I read that altering the date and time of an iDevice deactivates iMessage ! Now who on earth would do that on a regualr basis ? Well, turns out that many games (like Candy Crush) can be tweaked by doing so...

I hope this might help some of you, little cheaters !

A message sent using your phone number will break the chain and appear as a separate message thread, and only appear on your phone, it won't appear on your ipad. So, you either have to ask everyone to change your id in their phones, so they only send to your email address, or you ask them to delete all messages and only reply to the one you send using your apple id.

Boy, I guess this is not technically a bug, but it sure represents convoluted and less than secure messaging.

I had my daughter access my iTunes account so she could download the songs I had purchased (5 devices are authorized).  Now she is getting my iMessages, and we found no way to remove the email address (which she would know anyway) from her Settings (in contrast to statement above).  One can deselect it, but every time she makes an iCloud download of a song I purchased, it gets turned back on in iMessage...

I have a problem with iMessage syncing between my MacBook and my iPhone.  It used to sync just fine [i.e., I could see the same iMessage conversation on both my iPhone and MacBook], but no longer.

Now, I believe I inadvertently caused the problem because I changed my Apple ID [I was changing from a @comcast.net address to an @gmail.com one].   When I go into iMessage on my iPhone and attempt to add my email addresses [in addition to the phone number] a default Sign on box appears with my old @comcast.net Apple ID.   The old password to that address does not work, and entering the new password to the new @gmail.com address does not work either.   I cannot seem to find a way to edit the default [older] Apple ID that pops up.  Any suggestions?  Thank you.
