iTunes cannot sync... apps installed on the iPhone could not be determined.

I am trying to activate an original iPhone. I keep running into issues (partially because the rest of the world is activating 4Gs phones). I would appreciate any help that is available.

I am working on a MacBook running OSX 10.5.8. My iTunes has been updated- 10.5.

I am currently getting a message- iTunes cannot sync apps to the iPhone “MRL iphone” because the apps installed on the iPhone could not be determined. The iphone screen shows the usb cord/plug pointing to the itunes logo whether attached to a computer or not. And says slide for emergency use.

  • -I have restored to factory settings several times both from a previous backup and set up as new phone.
  • -I have even attempted to use another Mac and a family member's windows machine with similar results on all.
  • -I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes
  • -I have put the phone into the recovery mode and restored from there
  • -I have restarted both the computer and phone numerous times
  • -I have replace the SIM card with a new card from the provider
  • -I have received an email saying the phone was activated (and have called to verify with the service provider)

I'm sure there are other things I have tried as well that I am forgetting, as I have been at this now for about 3days. There have been times when I got nothing but a breif "accessing iTunes store" and then a white screen with the grey word iPhone in the middle. At least now I have the normal summary screen when clicking on the device. Unfortunately I am still getting an error "iTunes cannot sync apps to the iPhone “MRL iphone” because the apps installed on the iPhone could not be determined." I am not attempting to sync apps, just sync the phone to get a current/clean backup. I will want to sync the apps, just haven't been able to get that far.

By the way, prior to starting this process the iphone worked perfectly- no issues. This just seems to have become an issue when I attempted to restore to factory settings for a clean start with the new line.

This is the furthest I have been able to get in the process. I really need to get this up and running soon as I will need the phone for the work week.

Please help!

Well, after MANY calls to Apple, I was finally escalated to a senior rep who was not going to settle for not finding a solution. We tried lots of stuff that didn't work. He had me upload some files to him and called me back a few days later. Turns out in one of the last couple of updates the "Automatically Install New Apps" checkbox in iTunes, under Apps with your device plugged in changed its description and purpose. I did not want to check it because I have two iPhones, and an iPad, and do not want all apps on all devices. He suggested I try checking the checkbox and viola, it worked. It updated all the apps on my phone and did not install anything that wasn't already on the phone. It has worked perfectly. I suggested that they need to change the name of the text to read "Automatically Sync App Updates" since that is what it does, but there has been no change yet. Hope this works for some of you.

If it doesn't go to the iTunes Store tab in iTunes, once the store opens, click Purchased under Account on the right side of the screen and make sure all the apps you have purchased are downloaded to iTunes, then try the checkbox again. You may want to shutdown iTunes and restart your computer between these steps.

Good luck!

The simple process that just worked for me, lay in understanding that – indeed – for some reason iTunes seemed to have "forgotten" about the position of the respective app files (.ipa) for the apps that did not sync. (If only there was a more descriptive error message…)

To check that, open iTunes, choose "Apps" from the media-type-dropdown (Music, Films, Tv…) to get to the overview of all your downloaded apps. Then double-click on the icons of those apps which do not sync properly.

If nothing happens, you can stop reading here (you likely have a different problem than me…), otherwise you are offered to search for the "lost" app via a pop-up – just do that and simply point iTunes to the respective file (depending on the version of iTunes you use, that *is* some way down your iTunes music folder). Select the file and confirm.

Then re-start the sync with your device.

Good luck!!

I had the same two problems mentioned by others on this thread. In short, I could not transfer new or updated apps from iTunes 11 to my iPad. Nor could I rearrange my icons in iTunes and sync those changes to my iPad. The sync function appeared to run through all the stages, but nothing was committed to the device.

I was able to fix this problem by removing two apps from my iPad that had been inadvertently installed by another family member using their iTunes account instead of mine.

To identify the apps that need to be deleted, first turn on the Sidebar from the View menu (Ctrl-S in the Windows version of iTunes). Then plug in your device and when it appears under Devices in the sidebar, right click on its name and select Trnasfer Purchases. This will verify or copy every app from your device to ITunes, except for apps that were installed under a different account from the one under which you are currently logged in. Those apps that cannot be transferred will be named in a popup window at the end of the process. Just delete them from your device and you should be able to sync and rearrange apps as expected.

I'm sure this is not the only solution to this problem, but it worked for me. Your mileage may vary.

I too had a similar proble for the past few months, Like my I Tunes is able to update the apps but when Syncing with my I phone it dosent update neither there is any changes to my I phone apps.

Tried almost all the suggestions given out here....nothing, worked. Just now I saw this suggestion out here - that if any apps on my I Phone was dowloaded by any other account other than mine I tunes wont work the updated. Then i remembered i had one app dowloaded by my friend throught his account and his personel computer. As soon as I deleated this app the syncing and all updated started working......too happy now.....!

Viju2000, I'll bet that would have worked for me. I tried just about everything else to no avail. My personal iPhone had picked up a few apps from the shared computer where I back-up my work iPad (different account). Then I got a new computer (went from Windows to Mac) and I could NOT get the phone to sync correctly, esp. the apps.

I tried just about everything, but finally had to do a restore on the iPhone. All is well now, and everything came back. Wish I had tried your solution first, but I would encourage anyone who is at their wits end to just back-up the phone and do a restore. It worked for me! 🙂 I wish I had done it sooner instead of wasting two days trying everything else.

TL|DR? ANSWER HERE !

Ok guys, that's basically 15 pages of crap and useless ideas and hints that confuse people more.

I've had this experience and yes it sucked but it's simple - You got 1 or more faulty apps that don't match up with the device.

So, backup and delete all apps on iTunes, transfer your purchases from your iDevice to iTunes and start downloading again. If you have a few apps you can do a quick check as to which one is the app giving you these headaches, but if you have more than 50 it's not worth spending so much time

so you have 2 options

1 - what i already told you, delete, transfer, start over, you are not losing privileges to download apps you have purchased before, so you're fine

2 - you completely ignore syncing apps thru itunes and do it only from the iDevice itself (downloading and updating apps)
