iTunes cannot sync... apps installed on the iPhone could not be determined.

I am trying to activate an original iPhone. I keep running into issues (partially because the rest of the world is activating 4Gs phones). I would appreciate any help that is available.

I am working on a MacBook running OSX 10.5.8. My iTunes has been updated- 10.5.

I am currently getting a message- iTunes cannot sync apps to the iPhone “MRL iphone” because the apps installed on the iPhone could not be determined. The iphone screen shows the usb cord/plug pointing to the itunes logo whether attached to a computer or not. And says slide for emergency use.

  • -I have restored to factory settings several times both from a previous backup and set up as new phone.
  • -I have even attempted to use another Mac and a family member's windows machine with similar results on all.
  • -I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes
  • -I have put the phone into the recovery mode and restored from there
  • -I have restarted both the computer and phone numerous times
  • -I have replace the SIM card with a new card from the provider
  • -I have received an email saying the phone was activated (and have called to verify with the service provider)

I'm sure there are other things I have tried as well that I am forgetting, as I have been at this now for about 3days. There have been times when I got nothing but a breif "accessing iTunes store" and then a white screen with the grey word iPhone in the middle. At least now I have the normal summary screen when clicking on the device. Unfortunately I am still getting an error "iTunes cannot sync apps to the iPhone “MRL iphone” because the apps installed on the iPhone could not be determined." I am not attempting to sync apps, just sync the phone to get a current/clean backup. I will want to sync the apps, just haven't been able to get that far.

By the way, prior to starting this process the iphone worked perfectly- no issues. This just seems to have become an issue when I attempted to restore to factory settings for a clean start with the new line.

This is the furthest I have been able to get in the process. I really need to get this up and running soon as I will need the phone for the work week.

Please help!

"back up" = verb, "backup" = noun. The two word verb spelling reflects the fact that we say "backed up" for past tense (not "backuped") as well as being able to put the direct object between "back" and "up", i.e. "back the files up".

On the topic of the thread, I am suddenly having this same error as of this afternoon, and I haven't recently installed any new apps. I am really at a loss as to what I should do.

I am having this problem also.

As it stands my 1g iPhone is useless and I am at a loss as to how to proceed.

It doesn't help that there is some sort of race condition bug in the iTunes phone activation code that I don't always get iTunes offering the right options, sometimes it just put up a screen with iPhone on it after very briefly accessing the iTunes store. Very frustrating.

Still having this problems for over a week now.

I have tried all the solutions I can find but none have worked.

Have restored, created new Apple ID, activated phone (I have legite contract with AT&T) - nothing!

Went to Apple Genius and they said it was an Activation problem but this isn't the case as I am receiving txts from AT&T stating phone is activated (on another phone using same SIM card).

I suspect that this is related to iTunes attempting to sync to iCloud as when doing a factory restore this option came up and I mistakenly ticked it. Does anyone know of a way to reverse this option as 2g running v3.1.3 does not have this facility?

Any other fixes? Idea's?

I have a 2nd Gen iPod Touch 8Gb.

I just updated to iTunes v10.5.1.42 and have been getting the error as indicated in the original post.

I have shut down the iPod and rebooted my Windows XP Pro system.

I have downloaded all my apps from within iTunes.

Still get the error.

I just now tried restarting iTunes again and doing another sync.

Still same error.

Having the same problem with a 3G iPhone. Started after updating to the most current iTunes (10.5.1) yesterday (via automatic software update).

The error message is: "iTunes cannot sync apps to the iPhone “Your iPhone” because the apps installed on the iPhone could not be determined."

Tried: restarting computer, restarting iPhone, restarting iTunes, restoring iPhone from backup, fixing permissions. Nothing helps.

Same issue. Is this a new bug with iTunes 10.5.1??

I'm using ios 4.3.5, os 10.6.8, and itunes 10.5.1.

In the bar at the bottom of itunes that shows how much space is available, no 'app' space is listed.

Anyone know of a real solution?

I reported it to Apple on the feedback page, but, I'm pretty convinced that Apple doesn't listen to or read their feedback.http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html

thanks for posting that link to the shotgun solutions. Unfortunately the OPs problem is specific to after restoring an iPhone 1g. None of those "solutions" worrked for me. Other iOS devices work just fine and the iPhone 1g does not on several computers, including a MacBook Pro running latest and greatest on Lion.

Longtime 1st-Gen iPhone owner here with the same problem that Chaoscrdntr13 and LenTS reported. Mine happened three days ago and I've been without a cell phone ever since. In the last three days I've had:

+4.5 hours of tech support calls

+3 hours at the Genius Bar

+2.5 hours at the AT&T Store

+?? hours of self-troubleshooting / searching for answers

....and no one has a clue what the problem is. The last guy I talked to (AT&T rep) said "It's bricked - you gotta buy a new one." I'm starting to wonder if this was some kind of a deliberate scheme to force us out of our legacy data plan (I've had the $20/mo for "unlimited data + 200 text msgs" ever since iPhone came out.)

My phone was working fine until Friday night. It's gotta be something with iTunes / activation / Apple's servers. This stinks.

iTunes cannot sync... apps installed on the iPhone could not be determined.
